I think you have heard of Dating Sims, you know games where your only goal is to get a virtual girfriend. While the premise sound ridiculous i have seen them as a way to further relate and develope characters by giving them extra spotlight trought their problems and helping overcome them wich make you see the character in a different light. Games like Persona 3, Persona 4 and Growlanser series have the best characters i have seen thanks to this relationship elements.

However there is a dark side on this, in Japan it has another layer, where women pickiness and men loosing its manliness has made japan youngsters rely on date sims as a way to deal with the frustrations coming in a real life relationship and thus it has an impact on Japan society, birthrate and relationships.

Watch the video and share your thoughts here: Does Japan went nuts, are we going in the same way? Should women stop being picky about what they want in an ideal man? Does men need a testosterone boost to solve the issue?

Another thing is that is affecting the FF franchise, after you see the video you should realize why the obsession Toriyama has with Lightning and why he seems like a lovestruck teenager toward lightning.

I'm not entirely sure where to move this. I perhaps could move it to Rocket Town, as it is focused on games, but it could easily fit in in The Sleeping Forest too as it covers wider themes. I think I'll move it to the latter, as it is more debate-focused. If the flow of the thread changes then I'll move it elsewhere again. It is definitely a thread that could gather up a discussion, so I'll move it away from spam anyway.

umm...uhh... what did I just watch?
If all this information is accurate about it in Japan (I am going to assume it is without really looking things up) I have to say... WHAT????

I mean I have played some form of a dating sim game before (although I don't think Harvest Moon would fit in this category too well... :hmmm: ) But how do you...marry a DS? or...I don't even know where to begin with all this...

well i have my fare share of DS and i can say this is true, there is another thing in Japan where the sex dolls are not only just for Sex anymore (Since somehow japanese like sex games but not real life sex) but rather are for having a relationship where a person can hide its insecurities of a real life relationship (I saw this in Discovery Channel so its true)

As for the guy marrying a DS character is not strange, if i remember correctly a guy in America married a goat.
 
This is one man's opinion. While I have never seen a dating simulator, I have seen Sims. The two are nothing a like though. So let me spout my opinion out there.

I think any man has thought about "a virtual girl friend" just in a different light. The same goes for women as well. I don't mean you want a virtual girl friend jack you off or fondle you, but what I mean is this:

I'll speak about it from a guys point of view:

How many men have dated women where the woman is so utterly perfect in some ways, but in other ways they are the exact opposite of what you want?

Mental:

I have seen Alpha males date submissive girls. They throw them to the curve in days, weeks and very rarely months. Why? Due to they actually didn't want a submissive girl. They were just enthused with the idea of a girl who would do whatever they say. Though these girls have no passion, no desire, and probably low bouts of self esteem.

I have seen Non Alpha males date very passionate and very beautiful women, but what's the caveat right? They were WAY too passionate, bitchy, and controlling. If the guy had his eyes wander at all, then boom... let the mental or physical abuse begin for a week or two.

Physical:

The last thing is.. Physical. This might hurt ladies, but every man, no matter how much they "say" they don't care who they are dating... as long as it's a girl... care who they date deep down. Most men prefer one aspect or more of a woman. Whether it be their smile, their tits, their ass, their legs, their eyes, their personality, their voice, their overall face, their figure, their feet (yes I said feet), their hands, their hair.. They much rather be with a girl who has one if not all of these traits.

For me, for example, this is a terrible thing to tell you.. but I have only dated/married women with blue eyes. Subliminally and subconsciously I do it, but I only realize it after a week.

Back on topic:

So what does this all mean? I believe men and women wish they could change who they were with quite often in fact. I think although we advertize our society as a monogamist place, I don't believe we truly are. There are days when we want something new. If not do you think some of these retard actors and actresses would have a gig? They are just eye candy and act a certain way.

So the dating sims in my opinion is just another way for these people to actually mess with traits of men/women without being with a human. I think it's sick yes, but I don't see it as a true threat compared to other cultural things in Japan.

Should it be done away with? No. It's the persons choice, if they want to never date a woman again, or a man again.. then so be it. It's not morally or ethically wrong, it's just strange.

I prefer the real deal, due to life it brings.

That's a really strange issue Japan is facing but I don't think women should drop their standards. If there's something wrong with men then surely the onus should be on them to improve their situation? If people's standards drop society suffers as a result.
 
On the reverse however, perhaps the women have too high a standard, if we take the video as a factual account it seems that the women in general would rather a man who was tall, rich etc which isn't every man no matter where you are :hmmm: not to say it's all on women though but perhaps it's these lofty standards that the average man can't reach which causes the submission into dating sims where they don't have to deal with this situation.

And of course we have the reverse situation of are these women even worth the standards they impose?
 
This doesn't really surprise me. These guys are stuck in a fantasy. Too scared or frustrated to deal with real women, so they throw themselves at fictional ones. If you look around at boards like 2ch, it's not uncommon to see comments like, "2D > 3D" "3D pigs" and such. These are some hardcore otaku.

Don't get me wrong. I've played and enjoyed plenty of "dating sims", and I think that there are many cute, anime girls, but I'm not just going to give up on real women.

On a side note, this was actually the basis of an idea for a story that I have. I may write about that for NaNoWriMo. :hmmm:
