Ok people, most of us have seen that Britney Spears Superfan video, if you haven't then check it out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHmvkRoEowc

Now I'm not here to discuss this video, but I would like to ask you guys why you think people Idolize celebrities to such an extent. We see stories about them on the news, in magazines, on the internet etc.. and I honestly don't understand what makes us care about their personal lives so much, I mean its not like we actually know them personally outside their music/acting careers.

why do you guys think we are so drawn to the personal lives of our fav actors/musicians??

People are nosey by nature, I guess. Eh...I honestly have no idea why people care so much.

i dont think everybody cares.
some musicians and actors are really talented so its just like having sport stars as your heroes.
maybe being obsessed with celebrities is some form of escapism, a way to break free of the monotony of your normal life, meh who knowns

i think people have heros, mentors or Idol to look up to but its gets to the point where its just too much i can imagine how Famous people get bambarded with camera and mic all up in the face. but its good to have them at a certian degree for insparation, for how well they do their jobs. Maybe we care so much because society has famous celebrity on a pedestal and waiting for the most opertune moment to see them stumble so they can say HA UR NORMAL LIKE US!! Also scandel and dirts sell $$$$$$

Paparazzi

I hate that part of it; the scandal = money thing
Damn the paparazzi annoy me because of that, the whole "we snoop into your garbage, assault you on the street and stalk you (almost) just so we can put pictures of you, that we very probably will edit, into our magazines so other people can laugh at your mishaps because, as we all know, celebrities aren't real people and can't make mistakes!"
Thats the part I hate about Celebrities lives; I don't care whats wrong with their baby/face/relationship etc.
Let them have some God Damn Privacy!
Except media-sluts like Paris Hilton
She can go and... die comes to mind... lose all her money!:P

I work in a book shop and the amount of people who buy the magazines just to see whats going on in celebs lives is crazy. One woman spent about £15 on mags cause she said
"My lifes that boring, I want to know how the rich and famous live!"

Fair enough if you want to do that, but I personally dont see the point. Im not arsed bout Britney, Jordan, etc. No point wasting money on mags about them when you see them enough on the news to see how shitty their lifes are.

I rarely buy magazines and shizz to keep up with them, tbh, I don't really have much of a clue whats going on in celeb life. If I do have a magazine I tend to flick straight to the pages where they look like shite and laugh :wacky:
I quite possibly have an unhealthy interest in U2, Vin Deisel and a couple of other famous guys but thats purley perversion, Im not all that fussed about whether they snnezed at 11 oclock or whatever.

As for that video, I lol'd hard. That guys a pillock

I don't idolize any celebrities at all. Can see why some people do, but at the same time, they're not nearly as worthy of being idols as some of the top scientists, businessmen, and writers, etc. People who achieved largely through thinking. I guess the same people who are so obsessed with celebrities tend not to be interested in anything intellectual. Fair game being a fan of a few famous people, but some idolize them as gods because of their own inadequacies. Your average Hollywood celebrity often has their own troubles and weaknesses. Hollywood values, much?

I wouldn't say people "idolize" celebrities, but rather they're fascinated by them. They have lives that few of us could ever have, and people are morbidly fascinated when a celebrity goes down a path of destruction - like Britney Spears - because then it gives them something to talk about.

People that are famous draw envy and attention from those that aren't. Not to mention, a lot of people enjoy a good dramatic story and gossip, which is why they have the paparazzi.

I don't go crazy for celebrities, in fact, there's not any I'd be star-struck over.

I've met a handful of celebrities, and each time I politely approached them and told them I enjoyed their work, maybe got a hug or a handshake, and walked off.

So far I've seen: Carmen Electra, Tommy Lee, Tommy Lee Jones, Halle Berry, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Steven Tyler, Vanilla Ice, Robin Williams, and some other musicians here and there. A lot of those people live where I do, so, I'll occassionally see them at the mall, or at the grocery store. xD

I just never had a fascination with celebrities. They're just popular, usually beautiful, and sometimes talented people who just have gotten lucky.

Agreed with Aerith. There are a lot of factors involved as to why we are drawn into their personal lives. One of them is image. Many people want to know what happens to these celebrities, whether it be something humiliating or grand, it all comes down to the fact that people are merely curious. Of course, curious can turn into something negative or positive...something entirely broad.

Celebrities are something that entertains many others. That is their main purpose in the industry - to entertain us. It entertains many, many people - some in a positive way, others in a negative way, and some who just don't give a damn. I am one of those in the latter when it comes to certain celebrities.

But like others say here, there are those talented people out there in that field that sometimes we just can't help but feel a slight (at least for me) admiration for those people. It's a natural thing; nothing bad about it at all. Sometimes people just need someone to look up to in our lives and often times it's those celebrities out there. But then again, it all depends on what kind of image these celebrities are promoting to younger kids/teens out there...which I won't bother elaborating as that's a very broad subject.

Hahah, yeah I'm the same really. I don't buy magazines, but might look at them in the shop purely to laugh at their misfortunes. I generally don't give a hoot if Lilly gets pregnant of her brother or whatever though, hell I didn't even react when one of my friends got pregnant. =/

I guess lots of people just have an addiction to gossip, as it gives them something to squeal about. And celebrity gossip is generally more interesting than anything going on in their own lives so they thrive on the stuff.

Alot of the shit that happens in celeb life is no different than our own except for the fact our problems/sneezes whatever aren't broadcast all over the papers. It amazes me that Britneys bald head can make front page while attacks/murders and stuff always seem to be a few pages in.

Normally all that you hear is someone either has a new man/woman, is gay, pregnant, doing drugs or has got plastered on a night out. Big woo. Do we really care? Its always same shit different celeb >_<

I suppose if you love someone so much, you become obsessed with everything about them. Including those days when they take out the trash.

That's just a guess.

I've never really cared about the personal lives of celebrities since I'm only interested in either what they have to say or their music/acting. I feel like needing to know what they at at McDonald's is completely irrelevant to what they do, so I don't understand why anyone would care about what this person is doing.
However, this makes me think about when a celebrity gets into drugs or has a drinking problem. It's still irrelevant to their careers. It may effect the way they work, but it's still all happening behind the scenes.
But drugs and alcohol are different then going to the store to by an interesting jug of milk. People like me (the one's who honestly don't care much for the celebrity's errands), will actually probably begin to worry about that celebrity, since we feel a good amount of love for them.

I know I love me some Lady GaGa, but I don't think I would ever get out of my way to find out what she ordered from Starbucks. Someone who is a little more obsessed, or has a lot more love for her might. But if she were to have any problems, I don't think a fan caring about that requires them to love her to the point where it's unhealthy. All you need to feel is some love toward that artist to have some form of care about them.
So I suppose it's all the same, just on different levels.
