Assassin’s Creed III confirmed for October 30 release

Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed III will release on October 30 this year, following earlier confirmation that Far Cry 3 will release on September 6.

The date was given in a financial call to investors today. Details regarding the game are minute at this point, but it will star a new protagonist. Various locations have been rumored over recent months, with Egypt, China, and America during the Revolutionary period the running favorites. The French Revolution has also been mentioned.

Ubisoft also announced during its call to investors today that 7 million copies of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations shopped during the company’s Q3 ending December 31.

The new comes after a heated day for Ubisoft, in which a trailer emerged this morning confirming a September 6 release for Far Cry 3.

The announcement of the title’s launch was supposed to arrive tomorrow afternoon, Europe time. Ubisoft responded to the leak by moving the official release of the cinematic footage forward to today.

Far Cry 3 will release on PC, PS3 and 360.

The Assassin’s Creed game follows last year’s Revelations, which rounded off Ezio Auditore’s plot arc.

:hmmm: this means I need to get back and finish Revelations. I'm hoping ACIII is more like AC1 and 2 in terms of size and length. Brotherhood and Revelations are both too short and only had one bigger city which is kind of boring.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. I wonder who the new assassin will be and how he'll act and stuff. This will most likely be the last installment so I really hope the game is long and hefty with good game play and story line. :ryan:

It's strange this is being released in October though. Every other main title has been released in November but this is October?? very very strange. :hmmm:

Oh gosh, they released it a month early for the fans to get an extra month of game play because the world really is going to end :gonk:

I'm more excited for this than I've been for the previous two games, purely because they're essentially starting afresh again here with a new period (hopefully). Looking at that logo there (if it's official), I see some Fleur-de-lis. Does this hint at a game set during the French Revolution? It seems like a very logical period to head to next.

I just wish the games aren't annual. I know Ubisoft is very efficient when it comes to their teams, but franchise fatigue will quickly kick in, if it hasn't already. It also makes me suspect that each game may not match the scopes of Assassin's Creed 1 and 2; both had at least two years of development.

My boyfriend will be liking this! Haha. I quite like AC too, so I'll be interested in playing this when it comes out. I hope it's a longer one though, like others have said.

This is the original image. It's just what they want the next game setting to be. I hope it's not Egypt :hmmm: Deserts are pretty boring.

If it is set in Egypt then it wouldn’t really be in the middle of the desert. They’d probably stick to the Nile where the settlement is. The Nile can be very lush and is one of the most beautiful sights that could ever grace human eyes. The desert would be visible on either side, sure, and the ancestor character might trek into the desert (and to some of the peripheral ruins - if they are ruins), but the towns / etc and the river itself would be interesting. The Nile is like a serpentine oasis.

If it was Egypt I wonder when they’d set it. Ancient Pharaonic Egypt… Graeco-Roman Egypt... Perhaps a much later Egypt. Napoleonic Egypt would be interesting, and could link with the French Revolution. If there is any basis of fact behind these two very different rumours of the location, then that might be the link. Then again, we don’t know anything at this point.

They’ve already hinted at an assassin around at Cleopatra’s time, so we know that a famous (female I think) assassin was running about at Egypt at some point… Whether they give us her, or a male descendent of her (and ancestor of Desmond) it would be interesting.

Luxor / Thebes would be an amazing sight. Cairo too would also be great. Alexandria also. There are many, many places in Egypt that would look amazing as locations in AC3. Egypt to me does seem like a logical step a lot more so than France as a location (but the later period of the French Revolution also makes more sense than an ancient period), but we’ll wait and see. They’ll probably justify it brilliantly however it turns out.

Hopefully they finish the series with this one... You know, you can be Desmond finally and actually fight in the present time (since this all took place in 2012)

So unless this image that was leaked by a Best Buy employee yesterday, this is the next protagonist of Assassin's Creed, and it'll take place during the American Revolution:

That was very much a surprise.

I guess that people were right when they heard or prophesied 'revolution', but just got the wrong country...

I guess America does make sense when considering that Desmond is American, and therefore his ancestors must have arrived in America at some point. It also makes sense when you consider the ending of AC:R. Something big appears to be buried in America, and therefore I guess this new ancestor and Desmond are both going to be involved in this in their respective timelines.

I'd be interested in finding out how they tackle this time period. It seems like an odd choice... A lot of people are complaining in comments and such that everybody is going to end up being a lumberjack, for there are no serious buildings in Northern America at this time. The picture of the protagonist with an axe doesn't help this. An AC game where you climb trees and canyons could get quite boring. That said, I really don't know what was really around at that time, or where the game will take us. There would have been some great buildings, and this idea of North America just being woods and Indians at this period is a bit exaggerated. Still, it'll be exceedingly difficult to top the Renaissance even if America was culturally influenced by it.

I really hate it when games do this. It's only February and the box art is out already :gonk:
I want it to be released now, I'm so impatient :sad3:

This just means I have to finish the last two sequences of AC: R :gasp: I hope it's about as long/longer than AC II. Also they've got countdowns to stuff going on at the AC website: http://assassinscreed.ubi.com/ac/en-US/ So maybe we'll get some names or something soon.

Some new screenshots have emerged.

So it looks like we can go hunting in the woods.

We can also climb trees and probably jump from them to do assassinations. These seem interesting, though personally I am going to miss the urban environments.

It is a relief to see a town in those screenshots, but large portions of the game it appears will be wood-based. It'll be a challenge for them to make this as enjoyable as the other ones.

Some are speculating that we might see London too, but I think that might be wishful thinking for those that want to see an urban setting again.

Oh my god, Gingerbread Man thanks for sharing those these screenshots have truly sold me on the fact that I will indeed spend endless amounts of cash to get he very best version of this game that there is to get. If we can climb trees in this game that will be so friggin' awesome I swear! Argh! Damn I can't wait until October now, why do I have to be so impatient T.T

The protagonist looks really cool too, I can't wait to see how hard it will be to scale building and roofs with guard shooting at you and junk! Ahh, I hope in terms of length this one is a good one, I loved AC:B and Rev but damn their shortness :argh:

Anyway, the settings and those screen shots alone are enough for me to but this one hands down.

Assassin's Creed Info from Game Informer:

The latest issue of Game Informer has first details on Assassin’s Creed III. A reinvention of the series, it will feature a new assassin who goes by the name of Connor, although his real name is Ratohnhake:ton (pronounced Ra-doon-ha-gay-doo).

Connor has an English father and a Native American mother. As a child, he was raised on the American frontier by the Mohawk. After white colonists attacked and burned his village, Connor dedicated his life to justifying injustice. His character has thousands of unique animations, none carried over from older games in the series.

The game is set in 18th century America, between the years 1753 and 1783, basically during the American Revolution. Key locations include Boston and New York. Considering we’re not in Rome, anymore, Connor will utilize trees and mountain cliffs, as well as buildings and related structures, for climbing.

When in combat, the game focuses on putting the player on the offensive based on speed and momentum. Target-lock is gone, and is instead replaced by target auto-detect. Connor will play a role in major battles, where thousands of enemies can be seen on screen. In older games, the on-screen enemy cap was set at about 100. Of course, he’ll still have his hidden blade, as all assassins do. You’ll also be able to upgrade Connor’s gear and outfit as you progress. The tomahawk and knife are a “constant presence” in battle. They’ll allow Connor to perform double-counters and multiple takedowns, chaining kills. You can also use enemies as human shields. The team wants you to be on the constant move during battle (and even outside of battle!). A new dynamic camera will track the action and make battles look as cinematic as possible.

Some iconic faces will be making an appearance in the game, including the likes of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Charles Lee. The relationship between Connor and Washington is a core piece of the story. Lee’s role is still a mystery.

However, not all colonists are good people. That said, not all British are oppresive. As the game is still centered around the Assassins and Templars, it aims to display how both groups’ viewpoints exist in a gray morality – the Templars really believe what they’re doing is right. The French and Native Americans are also in the game. The team is aiming for accuracy – they’e even hired historical dialogue consultants and have Native American actors.

The game will feature an open wilderness known as the Frontier. The Frontier’s map alone is 1.5 times the size of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood‘s entire map. It’s not an empty wasteland, either. One-third of the game’s missions and gameplay content will be done on the Frontier. You’ll be able to hunt animals for resources. Depending on how you kill them, you’ll get different rewards. If you kill a bear in one hit, you’ll get a more valuable pelt than you would if it took you eight stabs.

If you hadn’t already guessed, travel in the wilderness plays a big role, as Connor will make use of trees, cliffs, ledges, and more to set up kills and combat. You’ll also be able to fast-travel, as the game has a lot more going from place to place.

A new sprinting system has been created for the game. It’s been made so you can hold the button to instantly turn around and flee from combat. You’ll also be able to kill people while still moving, so you’re able to keep chasing a target.

Cities are much more subtly detailed. You’ll be able to leap over wagons, slider under obstactles, and make your way over and around moving objects. Free running additions include things like jumping through windows to trees, and then on top of church rooftops.

As time passes, the game world will change. You could do battle in a huge field one year, and the next year it will be filled with encampments. Additionally, the world changes with seasons. So all cities and the Frontier will have both summer and winter versions. During the winter, soldiers will move slower and stumble as they move about, and all water will freeze, allowing you access to prveiously inaccessible locations.

Like past entries in the series, Connor will be able to take on quests from different clubs and groups. Separate from the mission system, you will be contacted by clubs depending on what you do in the game. If you hunt a lot, for example, you’ll get an invitation from the hunting society.

Here’s an example of an event that will occur during the story: “You will see the great fire of New York. You will visit Valley Forge as a location that is currently occupied by Washington’s forces. You will visit these places in the moment that they were important, and hopefully, experience the reason why we know where they are today. That’s the goal.”

The game will feature a goods-based economy, as well as a new property system. Desmond will also make a return, if it wasn’t obvious. Speaking of, there will be a new Animus database known as Animus 3.0. Multiplayer will also return, though Ubisoft has not yet shared details.

Full syncronization is back, but with major modifications. Missions have checkpoints, and you’ll get rewards for performing these tasks, rather than a 100 percent clear notice. “Imagine a leveling system in an RPG, except there’s a finite amount of XP to find,” reads the magazine. “The more in-sync you get, the more you fill your sync bar. Within each mission, each activity you complete has a value.”

A Brotherhood-esque Assassins system will also be in place, though it was not detailed. On the subject of factions, aligned groups are no more, but something new will replace them. That said, don’t expect any more tower defense.

Assassin’s Creed III is built on a new version of Ubisoft’s Anvil engine, which can “depict thousands of troops engaged in bloody battle,” as well as highly-detailed closeup faces. The game has the longest development cycle since the first Assassin’s Creed, and twice the production capacity and budget of the latest release, Revelations. They want it to feel like ‘Assassin’s Creed 3.5.’ The first version of the game will be complete in just a few weeks, at which point they’ll spend the rest of its development period polishing and refining it.

Sounds really really good :ohoho: This gives me more of a reason to play the rest of Revelations and sounds like it'll be as good (possibly better) as AC II.

At least three years in development? I suppose I can't complain there, and since it looks like they've gone to town in thinking of injecting something fresh to what was quickly becoming stale in the Brotherhood-Revelations chain of games, I approve.

Oh well, I really wanted the French Revolution, and I'll have to be honest, I did raise my eyebrow at the thought of the American Revolution. There were nowhere near as many tall structures, let alone as many famous landmarks in the colonies at the time, compared to the richness of Venice, Rome and Constantinople!- cried by first reactions. How would parkour work here?

But to give Ubisoft credit, they have genuinely surprised me. A large focus on rural environments where Connor can scale up trees could be one of the new elements this franchise really need at this point, though it could take a little while to get used to that. Climbing trees and hunting don't exactly pop into my head when I think of Ass Creed, so while I retain a bit of scepticism with this, I'm intrigued at the same time.

Hunting sounds awesome though, because I can imagine Connor on a tree as a bear approaches from below. Connor then leaps down onto the hairy hide of the bear's back and after the creature struggles for five seconds, a hidden blade plunges expertly into it. PETA will be up in arms!

Well this looks like it will be incredibly awesome, though hopefully it will not be another case of the ranged weapons making the game significantly easier. The tomahawk's blade is in the shape of the Assassin's symbol which is fucking awesome

Unsurprisingly, I've seen a ton of comments from wary Brit gamers about the portrayal of the British here as being evil bastard templars that need to be brutally murdered in the most vicious way possible while Ubisoft espouse a seemingly very pro-American, patriotic stance to woo the American gamers. Am I the only Brit Assassin's Creed fan who doesn't really care all too much about this? Sure, as long as it isn't portrayed as being all black and white:

AMERICA: GOOD, ASSASSIN ORDER. LIMEYS: EVIL TEMPLARS, KILL THEM!

I'm sure there will be plenty of gray. I expect there to be plenty of American Templars that Connor here may also want to take down. Plus, it lays down the game's fictional, historical foundation of modern-day America being ruled by the Templars. And the protagonist assassin is partially Native American. That can go somewhere that isn't just/a lot more than mere celebrations of the stars and stripes.

Finally, I'm used to seeing Brits as being the evil bastards anyway. Sure, it doesn't happen as much as to the Russians, Nazis and Middle Easterners, but so long as we are entertaining villains, I don't really mind. I mean, so what if I might be bashing my virtual, ancestal brethren? Everyone's ancestors and nations have been arseholes throughout history. Just so long as the game acknowledges that this includes the Americans.
