I get some of the armor for final fantasy, but some of the clothes that the characters wear... well aren't very protective, or suitable for battle. Do you think it'd be better for the characters to wear the armor? Or is it more fun to see the different clothing designs that Nomura puts out?

:hmmm:

I see what you mean. Honestly, I'd rather their appearance change when they wear different armor then just stay the same. Regardless if it seems protective or not. Sometimes it's boring seeming the same thing over and over again.

But I agree, most outfits don't seem very protective. I guess S-E cares more about looking good.

honestly, its just a game XD i mean, okay sure they wear weird clothes (i think many of the outfits are really creative and awesome) but when they fight the all stand in rows and take turns attacking...

There have been a lot of warriors in real life and in games that fight with next to nothing on. I don't see where the final fantasy cast would be any different. It's not about being in an armored tank to be able to withstand 1,000,000 attacks but the abilities of the fighter. The stats are really what matter. So as they level up their defense or vitality goes up to proving they can withstand more damage.

Like every other JRPG, Final Fantasy follows a key rule with clothing: the less you wear, the more protected you are from attacks. This is especially true for the females.

Honestly, the characters look samey enough as it is, they really shouldn't add to it by dressing them all the same, as well. Different clothing is about all the FF characters have to differentiate themselves from one another.

Oh If you were referring to the armor you find in treasure chests and such... they actually do wear it but you just do not see it. Also Martel is pretty right over there.. Ill give an example from Xenosaga. In Xenosaga III Kos-mos has a swimsuit you unlock that makes her so powerful... I do not know if they just want you to wear it... or encourage you to get things like swimsuit outfits with very strong stats. The FF characters usually do not have much clothing but yeah I would agree on seeing the appearance change from every armor you get... so like the MMO FF'S but if they were to implement that... they would have a lot of sprites to make for each character.

Ideally yes, it would be wise to wear a bit more armour when you're wandering onto a battlefield or a cave full of monsters capable of impaling you in a few seconds. But this is Final Fantasy - and a JRPG. You're supposed to suspend your disbelief as your party strolls in wearing attire more suitable for the beach and slays them all without as much as injury or blood while doing the same in some subzero location somewhere in arctic wastelands. Then again if you're playing a game where you can break into people's homes to loot them without any repercussions and cast magic at giant moving trees then you're not quite expecting much realism anyway.

It would be nice to see the armour changing each time you buy some new gear, as the weapons do. However, that would mean more effort for Square Enix, having customisable armour in both gameplay and cutscenes (even if games from other companies like Resonance of Fate have managed this) and they'll be too busy with the actual cutscenes and rock-polishing to do that. Plus, it appeals to fanboys anyway when your average female character appears to be wearing less and less lately - see Rikku in FFX-2 for example. :monster:

It doesn't shock me much to be honest. Well, ok, it's not really realistic. But I think it fits the rest of the game's atmosphere. Characters get smashed by trolls and cut with the sharpest blades but don't bleed a bit. They look like they're sleeping when they're KO'ed. No wounds, no blood, nothing. Being a powerhouse while wearing clothing that reveals vital parts of the body seems to fit in with the rest of this logic.

I preffer when Armour changes Cause the Armour appearance to change, and you just don't get that in the FF Games which is kinda a downer, i mean yea the weapons change in appearance and so do the shields and stuff (FFX) but then again in Games like FFIX, there only seemed to be one character whose outfit would have Defended him from Damage, and it's the same in the Rest of the FF Games, their outfit wouldn't help them in a Protective way.

This is why i Prefer games like Dragon Age, Because not only does the armour/outfits look Protective, but the appearance of the characters armour changes with the actual armour change.

Hit Points.

These remove the need to dress up in armor, they represent damage thats what they are there for. They remove the need to animate damage and blood spatter caused by attacks and leave the creators free to design clothing that is fashionable and non restrictive.

Realism in FF is not the highest priority :lew:

If defence can be represented by a number then armor change is not really necessary, these days it could be done no problem look how much extra material they can fit into a game.

But back when game data capacity was limited, it was hard to include other designs, FFI-VI were made of freaking sprites! its would have been hard to differentiate the appearance of armor with such poor graphic quality.

FFVII was kinda the same, great to look at but armor graphics would have been poor.

FFVIII could have done a bit more with armor changes, they had enough costume changes with the various SeeD outfits:hmmm: but that would have screwed up the point of the Junction System.

FFIX had role specific armor/clothing depicted on the characters and did and okay job of conveying Heavy Armor(Steiner, freya) with robes for mages(Vivi,Eiko,Garnet etc) and light armor for the all rounders(Zidane,Amarant).

FFX had some armor changes in the different Bracers, bangles and Shield the characters wore and though they changed the p[hysical appearanc eof the character some, they offered no defence boost with an ability present(defence+20% etc).

FFXII is where Armor change of appearance should have taken place big time!! It my have made Vaan more bearable if you could put a helmet on his head:lew:.....Ahem.....they had the graphical ability and the Armor even had little pictures in the menu but they still gave them there odd looking getups:srsly:

FFXIII they removed Armor completely from this game (BIG MISTAKE!) and reduced the character to 2 primary statistics: Strength and Magic. They looked stylish to a point but it was just another odd thing about FFXIII.

So when defence is represented by a number and style is fair more important than function FF tends to buck the norm quite a bit, S-E try (FFX-2) on games they dont really care about but main sequence title dont get screwed with.

I welcome the day when FF has visible armor changes, but to what extent? full customization? Including Helms, Body Armor ,Gauntlets ,Greaves ,Pauldrons Capes Robes Vambraces where would it end?

As long at it looks good Armor would make FF more mainstream and like Dragon Age and that games Armor is both stylish and functional, and shows just the right amount of cleavage.....8(?

I'm going to have to go with the "It's a JRPG, suspend disbelief." argument. The way I see things, the pieces of equipment such as armbands and bracers are ensorcelled in such a way that they function like armor - sort of like the bracers, cloaks, and rings of protection in Dungeons & Dragons. This gives characters that would otherwise have to walk around in armor, the freedom to walk around with their inner thigh exposed to sharp objects. Aaand even if they aren't wearing magic jewelry, I'm sure they or someone they know can throw up a quick "Protect" spell to keep their vital parts all safe.
I like the way the Tactics characters were "decked out". I thought their equipment seemed functional, but was just cool enough without being over the top.
