Square Enix usually tend to charge a relatively high price for their iOS games.

For example, where most iPhone games cost single digits, Final Fantasy III costs $16. Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions costs the same. The iOS port of Chrono Trigger? That’s $10. Another game with more time and effort put into it, Chaos Rings II, which is specifically built for iOS, costs $18.

Final Fantasy Dimensions will cost more than any of those titles. Square Enix announced this morning that the retro-style RPG will cost $28.99 / £19.99 / €22.99 on the whole. The game is divided up into chapters, and Square will give users the chance to try out the first chapter for a low price before they decide if they want the entire game. Here’s how the pricing works out:

Prologue – Free

Chapter 1 – $2.99 / £1.99 / €2.39

Chapters 2-4 – $9.99 / £6.99 / €7.99

Entire game – $28.99 / £19.99 / €22.99

Final Fantasy Dimensions will be released on August 31st for iOS and Android simultaneously worldwide.

Wow that is a rather expensive game, you'd have to think this is a Final Fantasy to remember. It needs to be worth the money! I mean that's like buying a brand new console game that is on offer. I won't be getting this i'm afraid...I'll give the prologue a go and see how it plays.

See, this actually looks really good (which surprised me to be honest), but:
1. I have no android or iPhone
2. The price is a little steep...I guess the prologue and 1st episode would decide if I would pay that much for the rest.

Reminds me so much of FF4 looking at pics :gonk:

Yeah I am not going pay that much for a fricken phone Ios game! Those screens are still way too small for me, put it on the big screen then we can talk :elmo:

Just for the record. the game's prologue is free, but you would have to buy the episodes separately. OR you can buy the entire package for $28. not 30. it's still steep but i guess when it says "entire package" it means you don't have to download all the episodes. its complete. however, this is just a guess. you can look at it on the official site

I have been watching more and more footage of it and I am seriously now not considering it. Like I said before I may download the prologue but even then I don't hold much expectation. I mean for that price I can get a much wanted X360 or PS3 game and to me that is the difference between me buying or not buying it. I am more looking forward to the news of FFXIII-3's possible announcement.

Well, since I have an Android phone, I might as well try out the free prologue, && maaaaybe even the first chapter. But $30 is waaaay too expensive for a measly cell phone game. -.-; I've never spent more than $10 on an Android game, and even that is a bit silly. ^^;

But many remakes that been on console were ported to ios and android. I think were all used too $1-$5 minigames that dont have replayability. This looks like it could be on psp or 3ds.

Thank you. Seriously, I cant believe people think this is expensive. If it's a quality game, pay for it. If you want $1 games, go play Angry Birds.

The problem is not one of conditioning to low-quality apps, it is that the iOS platform is not conducive to quality gaming experiences no matter how good the game is. I'll give you that Final Fantasy III was as close to an exception to this as it gets, so I have high hopes for Dimensions, but even there the analog stick proved to often be a pain thanks to the small screen and touchscreen-based control in general. Menus were all designed very well, but all the same the size of the screen made it easy to hit the wrong thing. And then there's battery life, which frankly stinks on mobile devices when you're running a game. Despite these issues, I managed to put 30+ hours into FFIII and I can definitely say it was well worth my $15.

But a similar game for nearly twice that amount? That I'm not sure of.

I'm not questioning whether the game itself is worth that much, I'm questioning whether the platform can deliver an experience worthy of the game. When you pay for an iOS app, you are paying to use it on iOS (go figure). That fact ought to be taken into consideration when it comes to pricing. How much time will people reasonably be able to spend with the game in one sitting due to poor battery life? How well can the game control within the platform's limitations? To stick a $30 price tag on there because the game is as good as a PSP title is not good reasoning when you take into consideration that the experience of using the game will be far short of the same metaphor.

Guess I better start saving up points on FreeMyApps...

Its a 16 bit game. So the analog issue will be minor.
And even then you dont have to buy the whole thing at once. Thats the beauty of episodic game.

All true, but in the end you still pay $30 for a game on an inferior platform. As it is, I don't plan on spending much if any money on it. I use FreeMyApps to earn iTunes gift cards all the time. I'll either earn a gift card to pay just for what I don't think is reasonable for an iOS game, or wait until I have earned enough to cover each episode as it comes.

@LukeLC - That's exactly my same sentiment! Even though the quality of the game itself may be comparable to a DS or PSP game, playing an RPG via my cell phone just wouldn't be the same as playing it on a more "standard" gaming device. Not to mention the issues of battery life that you brought up earlier. x__x

Nowadays, video game developers are really pushing to create these cell phone games for the iOS and Android, but no matter how cheap && accessible they may be, they're not the best substitute overall imo. ^^; I play a few free games here && there, but I can't tell you how many times they would randomly force close. && the mechanics and controls can be a bit awkward and annoying at times, like having to press on the touchscreen a bajillion times from different angles until the actual option I've pressed has been selected... -__-;

Oh I agree with this completely. I think the iOS is a terrible platform. I just disagree with those saying $30 for a game is too much. Irregardless of platform. I really dont understand how people can state to be a gamer/any electronics user and think $30 is too much for something

The platform has everything to do with it. I wouldn't mind dishing out $30 on an RPG if it were for the DS, 3DS, or PSP, but there is no way that I am going to consciously purchase a game for my cell phone for the same price knowing that it will give me an inferior experience compared to a game played on an actual gaming device.

&& anyhow I don't think that someone who only plays games via their cell phone constitutes as a gamer. Sorry, but I think they should at least own some sort of gaming console or portable device. Even a DS would be enough. Playing Angry Birds, Words With Friends, Draw Something... those are not "gamer" types of games. At least not in the way that I view it. They're silly little games that you play to waste time or achieve high scores. Not much depth to them at all, really, besides being occasionally fun. I know you didn't exactly suggest this, but I don't think you can criticize a gamer for not wanting to purchase an iOS/Android game that has a price atypical of most cell phone games. They can still be a true gamer regardless of how much they are willing to pay.

So yeah, the idea of spending $30 is not the issue at hand. Its the idea that you would be spending $30 on a game for a platform that doesn't even promise the best gaming experience and that is full of flaws. Nice graphics don't justify the price for me.

I think youre all assuming the worst for the sake of getting the last word. So inatead of pressing a buttom you will he touching a touchscreen. Wow. Biggest fail for you right? Level with it. I'm not saying to buy it or enjoy it. But to not make it out to be the worst thing because its not.....and for the record a gamer can make it to any platform. Even cell phone.
