2012; Massive Solar Storm with 'force of 100m bombs' to hit Earth in 2012

LOL I will say it again THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MOVIE 2012 OR THE DAMN MAYAN CALENDAR ;p

This is FACT..lol

Well, yes, that's true. But it is very odd what year it will occur. And actually, this solar storm will most likely happen in 2013, that's what NASA said, at least.

well on national geographic channel they DID say 2012 but yeah its always an assumption, but they did say 2012 so.. :P coincidence or not :tehe:

So long as i have my 160g ipod by then and i can some how charge it, it won't matter. Otherwise, I'm going to be one very upset puppy. I can deal with no electricity, but don't take my music.

Ah the good ol' fear mongering returns, heres a few other NASA predictions that fell short by a long yard stick:

Y2k glitch was apparently going to cause the nuclear defence systems to trigger.

Meteor Showers and planetoids that were apparently going to hit earth and destroy it

Global Catastrophie with the Earths Core being sundered by several powerful Earth quakes

90% of the Land on Earth being consumed by the Sea

People tend to forget that NASA are a government funded insitituion and as such, can be paid to say things to scare people, in this case, they are predicting doom once again and will bring out some new fangled high tech gadget that will avert disaster which will be a "must buy"

Dont forget, it was those same scientists that were formally on the payroll of the Tobacco companies, claiming Smoking was good for your health, now just to see what there excuse will be when nothing happens this time.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel, I'd hate to break it to you. But when Solar Storms knock out our power grids, that involves Ipods and anything electric.

Not this again... Predictions only have a certain chance of success. And the whole Mayan calendar shiz that inspired this. It's not specifically stated that it means the end of the world. It's just when the calendar ends. This whole debacle is fear-mongering from frightened people who don't like what they don't know.

agreed the Mayan calendar ends on the 21st just as our calendar ends on the 31st, the world could end tomorrow for all we know, i have heard numerous amounts of 2012 rumours on the internet, if it happens it happens, Nothing can be done to stop it. and if this solar storm does happen it will apparently only effect electronics and not wipe out every lifeform on our planet.

2012.... BRING IT ON! :mokken:

The truth about this matter is you cant predict the placement of a large amount of energy
with out observing in an static space, the source of this Solar Storm is dependant on the buoyancy of the sun ElectroMag field.

It just happens there may be an extremely violent release of energy from the suns surface when the poles off he sun realign and the magnetic field is not stretched so far it
snaps..yes thats right it snaps! and releases energy into space.

Before it realigns it is stretched to it limits there may be a possibility of a huge SNAP a
subsequent flood of energy heads in to space.........

This prediction is based on the Earth being in a certain part of its rotation, that combined with the unreliable nature of Solar Surface dynamics and unpredictable nature of ElectroMag field in the Sun makes it hard to predict, ridiculously hard to even know when it will happen with in a 12 month window.

The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle applies here.

Why is this even in the debate board? Talk about an extremely misleading title to this thread.

Solar winds happen all the time, yes they interfere with electronics but our atmosphere can absorb most of the impact. Hopefully this won't cause a global shutdown in communications equipment, but it's not like our lives will be in danger regardless.

The Earth will not have some humongous cataclysm in 2012. This solar storm has more facts backing it up than some rumor that started saying the world was going to end in 2012.

This solar storm has nothing to do with the 2012 crap. Based upon when the flare occurred and the distance we are from the sun, scientists have concluded that the earliest we'd be hit by a solar storm cause by this flare would be sometime in 2012. However, they said it could be anywhere from 2012 to 2014. This is a completely separate event that will happen, and it's just a matter of how bad will it be in the end. Will it actually knock out power around the planet? Who knows for sure until it happens.

I get a kick out of how people seem to think that just because this may or may not occur in 2012, that all of a sudden this is the cataclysmic even that will destroy the world. They aren't the same people. You ever see an aurora (I still haven't and I really want to )? It's going to simply be a stronger version of that. If it does end up hitting us like scientists are predicting, I would expect the sky to light up like a Christmas tree. Let's just hope the blackouts end up being limited though.

The world ending in 2012 is going to come and go just like the Y2K bug. I'm pretty sure no one got eaten by their toaster due to Y2K. I can't wait for the day after it's supposed to happen. That will be a glorious day!

I guess it is about time to bid farewell to some of my friends: bye PS3, you almost cost me an eye. Bye modem....you won't be missed I was going to replace you anyway. Bye cellphone...if I knew I would have bought a cheaper one. Bye laptop...well you lasted more than I expected.

Now this got me thinking into something. If indeed a "blackout" occurs, what will happen to all those people who depend on machines to stay alive? Or those people who must regularly visit the hospital for treatments in order to prolong their lifespan? I guess it is time to stay healthy and take good care of your kidneys, your lungs and your heart. You are going to need them.

My toaster did attempt to eat me, but it must have been because I bought it in that old gypsy store. They said it was from a house in Amityville. :mokken:
Nah, just kidding. ;D

But just in case, I might avoid church and other religious groups around that date. If I open my mouth and comment they might say I am a heathen or under some sort of demonic possession and might attempt to burn me in a stake. I expect a lot of people going back to religion, saying they found Jesus or whoever they choose and once this all ends, we will see them back dining by the Devil's Table. :monster:

"Force of 100m bombs" <- and that isn't an exaggeration in the slightest, of course. Well over 9000, then. Hmm.

I won't pretend to know whether the world will end in 2012 or whatever, but I don't think that scientists or NASA or whoever should pretend to know, either.

In any case, mankind is never happy unless there is an imminent disaster or media scare looming on the horizon...or a film of one about to come out. I'll take this as seriously as I took swine flu and everything else that came before it.

Being the scientific person I am, it's interesting to hear information like this (well, not about our impending doom, but the astro-phsyics behind it). But the key word in all of this is "theory". Theory is more or less is unproven fact. Sure, they can trace the tracks of matter in space. And when all is said and done, matter might not end up exactly where they tracked it, but it'll be damn close. With that said, I doubt we'll see a solar storm hit this planet. Not to say it would never happen, but it is highly unlikely.

I'll put this under the category of more scare tactics, like the whole December 21, 2012 deal. People love drama, so this sort of information surfaces to get people talking, really. I'll worry about it when more facts are known and it's closer to the time of happening.

You think scientist just make this stuff because they are sick of toiling in anonymity?lol

That'll teach us not to ignore them........threatening us with stuff most people cant imagine the entirety of its scope.

if anything, i hope they at least start looking into ways to make our communication systems more stable. a disruption every 11 years is quite distracting to humanity.

Solar storms have happened before, to say one will never happen again is just insane, this just emphasize that we should have some ability to bring the grid back up if this does happen, or even better prevent it by shutting down the grid if necessary to avoid damage

There's already a way to detect solar flares up to a day and a half before it happens. Betting on an ancient Mayan calender is just plain stupid. What's more is that any existing asteroid in space can be estimated to hit earth 5 years before it even happens. Of course there is always a chance of impacts spiraling new ones into an orbit, but who the hell could foresee that?

2012 is just a bunch of hype

well, i am in space science and the earth might survive because the atmosphere of earth will reduce that to about 20 or so. plus, the solar system is suppose to clash with it's sister solar system to form a new solar system, then devoured by a black hole that is bigger than all the solar systems in our galaxy. plus, the black hole is in the middle of the milky way galaxy which is home to our solar system.

In other words, this scenario is still not the worst that could happen? :wacky:
I don't know what would I prefer, get roasted to death by the sun or having our planet be sucked up by a black hole. It could be a matter of which one would hurt less...

I pray I be long dead before any of this happens....at least the black hole....2012...we shall see.

yea, the whole solar systems clashing and black hole scene is like millions of years in the making, by which time we will be either dead by natural causes or be long gone from this planet.
