Confirmed: Final Fantasy X HD Is A Remaster

By Jesszman - Today, 01:56 AM - BX GameSpot

During Sony's TGS 2011 Keynote, Square-Enix dropped a bombshell. As a way of celebrating its tenth anniversay Final Fantasy X would receive the HD treatment for the Vita and PS3. Since then, we haven't heard much about either version of Final Fantasy X HD. The last time we heard about it was in early January when original producer Yoshinori Kitase would be overseeing the project.

There has been much debate about whether FF X HD would be an HD remake similar to Halo Combat Evolved: Anniversary Edition, or an HD remaster like the rest of Sony's PS2-era collections. After almost five months of being left in the dark, we finally have the answer.

During an interview at Taipei Game Show, Square-Enix's Shinji Hashimoto revealed that Final Fantasy X HD would in fact be a remastered version of the 10-year old PS2 classic.

I'm happy enough with that. The only thing that would ever stop me from playing FFX (although there's not much chance of that happening), is the slightly dated graphics.

I'm definitely looking forward to this, and am extremely excited to see what sort of trophies they've added (please don't let them be dark aeon related...I wasn't fussed with doing that the first time around lol).

I hoped for a remake too.

But I figured it wouldn't be. I mean, obviously cash cow SE would remake 7 first. You know...instead of games I actually want to get remastered. :sad3:

At least I got VIII-2 with XIII-2 ^_^

This is unsurprising; any changes they made to it would be met with equal praise and criticism, and really, they don't NEED to make any changes to make money out of it. Since all SE care about these days is making money...

But I'm willing to bet this won't stop from incorrectly calling it a remake :hmph:

I'd agree with this. Although SE listened to the fans and improved 13 with 13-2, 11-14, along with some of the trashy side-FF games, is proof enough that they can't be bothered to put much effort into their games...and they don't need to.

Also, I find people calling slightly upgraded ports "remakes" a bit annoying...

I personally don't care if they add extras to the remaster, considering it's a good enough game to play through plenty of times for your monies anyway.
Trophies + upgraded graphics are good enough for me to re-buy (at the right price).
I'm looking forward to this :)

Remake or remaster, I'm buying it all the same :awesome: For people who are disappointed, keep in mind that remastered games still look great in HD. The gameplay and such that we all loved is untouched (thank God). Sure, it might not be up to par with XIII or XIII-2, but it certainly won't look like a PS2 game anymore.

Oh, and to the above comment about VII being the first in line for a remake, you're forgetting that FFI-VI have already been remade. Skip VII-IX, and we have the first HD remaster with FFX. So please, leave out the bandwagon hate next time.

I think you'll find that FFI-IV have been remade (although I'd argue that I and II are remasters) and you can hardly call the FFV and VI on the Gameboy Advance remakes. They're little better than ports; they might JUST classify as remasters, but it's a stretch.

I also believe it has been explained numerous times why FFVII, VIII and IX haven't been remastered: because the graphics are so bad that they'd need to be remade, and apparently remaking them would take far too long or something. FFX, by comparison, is much easier, and HD remasters seem to be a trend, and a quick way for crap developers to make a quick cash-in because they've since forgotten how to make proper video games and they aren't doing as well as they used to. It's not surprising at all that SE would hop on this bandwagon.

I'm not disappointed by this, since I only intend to get it if I need a Vita game, the price is respectable, and it has the Dark Aeons in it. Three conditions, and I doubt all three will be fulfilled.

I forgot VI was also on the GBA. That means it got remade twice! Although, I feel the PSX remake was still better.

Since it is just a remake- I have 0 incentive to buy it. I have the ps2 version it still looks good enough. I am not gonna drop money just to catch it in 3d.

Why wouldn't they add content (side quests, more weapon modifications, new places, more backstory)?

I was going to buy this but since its only an HD facelift, im not even going to pay attention to this project anymore. i had plans to buy a ps3 just for this game. oh well, maybe in 10 years they will do a remake for the ps4 haha.

I think we could call the Wonderswan Colour versions a remake of the original NES releases, and every version after is a remastering/tinkered port of those. So yeah, only I-IV have received a 'remake' whilst V-VI have only had 'remastered' treatments.

I don't see why they need to remaster it, the game is fine as it is, if anything they need to be doing the ones that came out on the PS1 first as they are the ones that need remastering. FFX still looks great compared to today's top quality graphics, what could Square possibly do to make it any better?

Have you played that shit on a HD TV? Top quality it is not.

I don't really see the point myself, but the fact is remastering FFX is feasible, whereas (for all the constant moaning about it), the PS1 games would require a total remake and that would just take too much time to do.

Excuse me, a good game being ported/remade twice is your issue? Let's look at the facts sir,

FF1 - Made for NES, ported later to Wonderswan, MSX, Playstaion, GBA, Mobile phone, PSP, Virtual Console, PSN and iOS. Ported/Remastered 9 times.

FF2 - Made for Famicom, ported later to Wonderswan, mobile phone, Playstation, GBA, PSN, PSP, Virtual Console and iOS. Ported/Remastered 8 times.

FF3 - Released on Famicon. Ported to iOS and Virtual Console. Remade for NDS. 3 New versions. Mainly because NA never got it until a couple years ago.

FF4 - Made for Famicon. Ported to Playstation, GBA, Wonderswan, Virtual Console, and iOS. Remade for NDS. 6 New versions.

Whereas with FF5 and 6, after they were originally made, they have ONLY been ported to the Playstation, PSN and GBA. Only 3 versions of these games remain.

These games, if any, deserve a proper remake treatment that the likes of 3 and 4 have had for the DS. Whether it the Vita, 3DS or console (unlikely) these two should definitely be remade.. and frankly I think it's unfair that X got it first when so much interest has been shown in the former, and not the latter for a remaster/remake.

Go back and read my post again. FFVI getting "ported" and remade isn't the issue. People crying about how FFVII is going to receive the first remix is the issue, because it's certainly not. If anything, your post only reaffirmed my initial statement. Thanks.

***EDIT***

Post I'm referring to:

Well, that safely debunks the previous rumours then, and good. Seriously, what would have been the point of a remake, considering how much time, people and effort would have been needed to go into it? I guess we can now safely say that you shouldn't expect the less realistic demands such as entirely new content, and even more unreasonable demands such as new voiceovers.

Money. That's why all the companies that have re-released classics have done so. It will cost very little to remaster the game, the basic foundations are already in place, giving it a facelift and tweaking the game here and there will cost very little. More or less the reason why remasters never cost as much as brand new PS3 titles. If it's a big hit then there's little cost and high profit, if it flops then the cost is still little.

Even though I'm a big fan of FFX, I'm still not buying a Vita to play this. I think the game looks just fine the way that it is now. There's 0 incentive for me to pick it up since idc about trophies at all and there's no added content. ):
