I had this brilliant idea that we would have a photography contest for the community. Each member who wants to participate will take a photograph and post it in this thread. At the end of the month, we will vote on who took the best photo. I will attach a poll to this thread at the end of April, so we can vote. There is no limit to the number of people who can participate in the contest, as it would seem that unlimited poll options are allowed on here.

Some rules for the contest:
1. Only one photo per person, so make sure you take a good one.
2. Keep the photograph decent, in other words no sexually explicit content.
3. Only submit a photograph that you have personally taken within the month of April.
4. No photo manipulation (such as Photoshop) or any other editing of photographs.
5. Try to avoid taking pictures of individuals, however if you simply must take a picture of a person and they are clearly recognizable in the photo, please ask for their permission first (as required by US law).
6. No making or using "alt accounts" to vote for your own photo, thus cheating.

Ooh, this sounds like a nice idea! And I must charge my DSLR for it. :wacky: I'm in if this goes ahead! :yay:

It might be a good idea to set themes so that it's a little more challenging. Entries would also feel more coherant! ^_^

I'm wondering whether this would be more suitable in Luca, though, part of the Spira section. :hmmm: @Gingerbread Man @Pockets

Thanks! Actually that's not a bad idea, about having themes. Only I don't want to limit peoples' choices, at least not in the first couple competitions. I guess we'll see how this goes first.

You could make the themes more generic, like 'Nature,' 'The Home,' 'Your Favourite Place.' ^_^

'Black and White' would be a good one too, although that would require a LITTLE Photoshop work. :hmmm:

I'd see what people think here! :) I'd enjoy having themes! It'll give me something to aim for and it would be ineteresting to see a number of takes on the theme. :)

I think this is a great idea to get the forum even more active =)
I will see what I can enter, if I have the inspiration. I agree about making specific themes too!

Now hang on a second. When you say take a picture in the month of April, is it the month of April any year, or in this specific year? It might determine if I'm in or not. :hmmm:

In the month of April for this year, or a picture taken in the previous month at the very latest.

@Lirael
Actually that is a good idea, I think we should definitely do that, I'll implement it in next month's contest.

Most cameras should have a Black and White filter.

Great idea btw Phoenix, I'll see if I can enter this. I've taken up small interest in Photography, I just need a good camera for it lol.

Give it has nothing to really do with what the GFX clans do, or poetry/fan fiction, not really. It'd be clumped with misc at best. We have a photo album section dedicated to this type of thing here in Gaia.

That being said, it's up to @Phoenix Rising at this point. It can fit in any of the above. Here is fine, photo album is the Gaia section (not a thread, but a section) or Luca in Spira. It's your baby, what kind of neighborhood do you wanna raise it in?

Pros and Cons

-Here can give you any freedom to do what you want, but those who respond have equal freedom as long as they remain on topic.

-Photo album has post count disabled, but must remain on topic and is dedicated to this type of thing. Essentially the same as staying here, just with the focus on pictures.

-Luca has a more dedicated base (Spira section is the strongest "on topic" section) but the required effort can deter a few of the participants.

I'm a noob when it comes to photography, but here goes.

How do we know that people took a photo in the month of April though? :hmmm:

Anyway, I'm no photographer, but I do like taking pictures. This was taken about a week ago, at Solvang.

you could just put it in the art subforum, photography is still art?

I haven't had my DSRL with me recently, nor have I had a lot of time to take a good photo, but here's something I took on my phone whilst on a bike ride! ^_^
I'll be WAY more creative next time. :wacky:

that's what i'd have thought too.

i had some brilliant chances to get some really good photos today, if only i'd seen this thread a bit earlier. i've recently just got a really good dslr with an incredibly good lens. i'll have to get out and about.

Considering most other photographic art based threads are located in the Artist Cafe, due to the nature of this being art, and also due to popular suggestion I'll move it to the Artist Cafe.

Our fears and hesitancy with this section is that this topic (which is a very good one) mayhaps be forgotten if placed here (more people search through Costa). However, with the advent of the Twitter account and such things as the Blog, we could easily keep this photography competition in view.

Continue with the fantastic entries.

this is one that i had to post.. we saw taz riding a jet ski being pulled by a motorcycle... i just had to get a pic of it.

Here's my entry. It's a beautiful sunset that kinda looks like an upside down rainbow. It appeared in my area, coincidentally on April Fools. Too bad my phone camera is not too good. But here it is anyway:

There are ways to tell when a photo was taken, sometimes.

There's a format of data called EXIF stored in the picture format, its not present in every image but newer cameras usually have them.

It can be viewed with an app that reads EXIF data, looks something like this(you can see time and date & other info) used @The Doctors duck picture as an example:
