I... have a problem. I have somehow created a strong attachment to next-gen games, and I can't seem to tolerate older games anymore! I don't know what's wrong with me, but I just can't play things like Final Fantasy VI or X without getting bored because of it's standard definition graphics and lack of voice acting! I was never like this before, but then I just exposed myself to newer games for a while, and then I tried to play an older game, and it just lost its feel. It felt bland. How can I immerse myself with the classics and not be a next-gen fanboy? >.< I need motivation!

I dunno what to tell you. Maybe try a gradual backward transitioning? I mean, there is a considerable difference between a SNES game and a current-gen game.

Like, if it's a PS3 game, play something for the PS2. Play a couple of PS2 games, and then try out a PS1 game and see if that works?

It could also be particular games. I find 2D games of various systems don't have much differences in graphics, so that may be one path xD

I'd like to think I don't have the same affliction myself. At the moment I'm dealing with a backlog of games, but I think I have enough will power to enjoy any game I get a craving for without transition issues.

I'm getting Tomb Raider (1996) for PS1 in the mail soon, I'm afraid I'm gonna play it for like 5 seconds and get bored >.< I really wanted to play it though, for a long time... Even though it was like the dawn of 3D action adventure xD

Well, look at this way: They might not look as pretty, but they're harder, longer, and actually worth the money. The majority of next-gen games last barely 10 hours, and are pitifully easy. When it comes to games, I would say graphics are the least important attribute of a game. To each their own though, I guess.

But then, everything that sells well gets remade eventually. You'll miss a lot of awesome one-offs, but you should get to play the popular old-gen games in the future when the companies decide they need to make even more money from their crappy franchises and remake them with enhanced graphics and little else :hmph:

Arent you also the guy that said he cant play games cuz he gets sick?
Spose its just not your thing then.
Cant force yourself to like what you dont like. Doesnt bother me really, though i will agree that playstation 1 games have aged really really badly. Amazing graphics are defiantely fantastic but i find theres a lack of good games nowadays when you compare the numbers with that of the ps2. That might just be the fact that im not into gaming as i used to be but maybe im not into it cuz the game quality isnt so good? I dunno =z

Well, there's no real easy way to suddenly revive your enthusiasm for the older games then, but I guess we can look at this in terms of genres. You mention that you won't be able to get into games like FFVI after experiencing the next-gen games. I do suppose that with JRPGs, going from the retro JRPGs like FFVI to the ones you see on the PS3 these days is a massive jump, and that I can see why it would be so difficult to get into old JRPGs more than any old game of other genres, arguably. I'd say follow Fusionist's advice as well for the time being. Gradual exposure to older games can work wonders, particularly if you eventually find like an old PSone game that really gets you hooked. I can't say I disagree with what others have said here. Next-gen games may be pretty, but in terms of gameplay as a whole, they're not exactly up to the level of what you had from SNES and PSone games. To reject older games is perfectly fine, although it would mean rejecting a lot of potential classics in there.

let's put it this way - games that in their time were revered for their graphics, have now been outdone and lost that 'wow' factor. if you're not generally a fan of animation, the cartoony sprites of ffvi probably won't appeal to you anymore.

some games will be stale now that you've started playing games with better graphics. others will stick with you because of other traits they have to offer that new-gen titles don't. Ex: Valkyrie Profile 1/2, Disgaea, G-Darius, et al.

I have the opposite problem!

I can't for the life of me get into most new games!! on my PS3 I have more PS1 and 2 games than PS3 games.
All my friends play things like CoD or Halo etc and ask me to join in but I just don't want to. I'd much rather play FFIX or KH all over again or old PS1 games like Bust'a'Groove etc.

bust-a-groove - is that the one with the little dragons and bubble-blasting? it was one of my gateways into the anime style from my younger years. i played the 4th game with my uncle and was good enough to beat him after a few hours.

i do lament the lack of titles like that for the ps3/360. i feel that bright, colorful games are sparse between the two systems.

My problem is more with today games... It seems like the better the graphics the fewer the games...sorta....

I remember when ps2 was the big thing, You could walk into best buy and they would have two rows just for Ps2 games...heck I think even Xbox and Gamecube could have two rows....

Now they have to stretch out those rows for the PS3....putting in Psp with it and there controlers and everything else just to give it its own row.... Xbox 360 is no better... I think Wii is the same to...

And the other problem is the varitiy of games.... PS3 and Xbox 360 mainly... they have a couple good rpgs...then 100000000 FPS and 10000 racing games.... what is wrong with this picture???

But back to the discussion...

I understand how once you play an amazing graphics game that it might seem hard to play a game...with no voice acting...and you have to read everything...and sometimes its hard to figure out if its a cat a dog or something else... But try to look at it from the story rather than the graphics...see if that helps...

haha no thats bust'a'move.

Bust'a'groove is a dancing game :)

But I like them both!

All games of this generation are shit:hmph:

An unfair generalisation to be sure but, I have maybe 5 PS3 games, there are no engrossing games out there that I would by, the research i do can have a big influence on whether I get a new game. 1 word could swing my interest.

I remember when I was looking at details on White knight chronicles on a went to the shops and got it for $93 before they closed, it turned out to be really good. But it was the only game that worked out a such.

The graphics may be better these days but the quality of story has diminished:sad3:

Oh I LOVE bust a groove! I played both BaG 1 and 2. I thought that it was the most genius and innovative dancing game with the best set of characters + personalities. Shorty... Kitty-N... Heat.... ahh the memories :)

this.

May I add 10 more 0's for the FPS genre? lol. I hate FPS games with a passion. I am extremely disappointed that basically 99.99999999999999% of the games in the market are shooter games, and the fact that younger teens are so crazy about them. They all look the same to me...

Another type of game I like, but is almost completely missing in the present is build-your-own/simulation games like sim theme park, zoo tycoon, sim city, etc. I think only Sims survived. I still like designing houses in sims 3 sometimes.

Although I prefer pretty graphics, I don't mind most PS1 and PS2 games, like crash bandicoot, spyro, tomba!, etc. Their nostalgic feel and magic compensate for the ugly graphics. But I am not very fond of NES graphics... They give me eye-sores.

Well I just got Tomb Raider, and I was surprised... I actually didn't get bored. I just got tired because it was like 1:00 am and I wanted to sleep so I did actually only play it for about 10 minutes. But I'm going to take a break from the PS3 games and do some older games. For example, I am currently wanting to finish Final Fantasy X, Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, Tomb Raider 1 and Silent Hill. Those are all quite aged, (-FFX and Tomb Raider: AOD) and I'm still enjoying them. I'll just keep this up and see how it goes.

Just make sure you blame the consumers and not the companies. All the companies are doing is catering for the largest markets, and in this generation it is FPS titles, JRPGs are becoming a thing of the past and the majority of RPGs released nowadays are and will continue to be WRPGs.

The graphics may be better these days but the quality of story has diminished:sad3:
- Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Bioshock
- Heavy Rain
- Metal Gear Solid 4
- Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time
- Red Dead Redemption
- Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
- Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
- Valkyria Chronicles

Just to name a few. :dave:

Um is that you agreeing with me?:hmmm: all you did was list a bunch of games?

I played tekken 6? mid last year........returned, nothing new to it, wow you can dress up your character different. Uhg freaken sacred 2 horrible waits to be traded in. Valkyria Chronicles decent concept nice characters, repetitive and boring. GTA4:gonk:

Marvel Ultimate Alliance awesome game played numerous times. Going back a bit but Saints row 2 was an excellent surprise. WWE S.DOWN VS RAW2011 not everyones thing but it has potential if your ignore the actual wrestlers and just create your own:lew:. Dragon Age Origins my word this was/is a great game.

Anticipating: FF Dissidia012,Dragon Age 2, FFXIII-2, possibly an early release for FFX Versus? and maybe that Type0 for the PSP?Saints row 3 even.

I just want something where you can hot monster with a sword:D

Fixed.

I understand that there are some very good modern games. However, a small list of them doesn't prove that the quality is the same as in past time.

I haven't really seen much of a change in the quality of the storylines, unless you count something like Final Fantasy XIII. But the quality of the gameplay, the originality and the creativity is what's going downhill.

Sage actually comments on this.

Basically he says that so many game have become generic.

There are some games from this generation that I really like and others that I just can not get into. I am not a fan of shooters. I will play them with friends but would choose not to play them. unfortunatnly so many games out there now are shooters and there are not many good RPGs.

I am happy though that Nintendo is releasing side scrollers because I've missed them when everything went 3D.

I know I do blame the consumers that constantly buy the FPS! I remember when it was a geek thing to buy Video games, friends I had mocked me for playing video games, then FPS come out and now they have like all of them, and they area all becoming so annoying to play, Halo is done for thank god hated that FPS the most! it was good for the first one but after that, bleh, didn't play Reach yet but rather not.

And I know more and more companies well do WRPGS but I am thankful that there will still be JRPGS as long as Japan doesn't want to become "western." I do enjoy the occasional WRPG don't get me wrong, but I'm not going play five or six of them a year, maybe one or two.

No, I'm listed a small list of games that are widely popular and widely know as top, top games.

Fixed. But the quality of the gameplay, the originality and the creativity is what's going downhill.
Depends on what genre of game you're looking at, if you look at FPS the game physics have improved massively. And 'originality' and 'creativity' has been gone for a long time, not just the current gen. Nearly all games just take another games concept and work around it.
