So we all know what vegetarians are? What about fruititarians?

I met someone this weekend who said he was a fruititarian. Basically, he won't eat anything that has to die. So, no animals, vegetables, or any other plant. So what does he eat? Fruit that will fall from a tree and some grains. And he said something like how plants can feel pain and know when they are hungry. Don't know how true that is, but it's part of the reason he won't kill plants either.

I was a little curious about this so I looked it up and found this website.

http://www.thenewearth.org/fruit.html

Though I can admire anyone that chooses this diet for their own moral reasons, I can't help but think that it is most likely very unhealthy. Can you really get all the nutrients you need from just fruit? Any thoughts on this?

I'm sorry, I don't see the difference between a tomato and an apple. Hippys are so weird. :monster:

He better not set me on fire for harvesting the tomatoes in our backyard. -____-

Yeah I don't think I will ever support them cause fruit and veg are both plants and to assume they have feeling is okay but if I said a stone had feelings am sure I would find some crazy people that would actually believe me. I was always told that if you eat five fruit and veg a day it will kill cause your getting to much of one nutrient no fear of that happening to me cause I barely eat fruit.

For some reason I just got a picture in my head of Fruitarians protesting against Vegetarians for eating veg I wonder how the Vegetarians would react.

Well I think anyone who only ate things that didn't have to die would most likely have to get their missing nutrients from supplements, like vitamins or pills :hmmm: I'm a vegetarian myself for moral reasons, because I don't like killing animals unnecessarily, but I can't imagine someone being able to go throughout their entire life without even killing plants--not necessarily for eating purposes, but because a vast number of everyday products (houses, paper, medicines) contain plant products, and I'm sure they usually don't just wait for the plants to die before harvesting them. I mean honestly, I do feel something for trees and plants and as a living thing it does bother me somewhat when they have to be killed, but I'm pretty sure it's been proven that they can't physiologically feel anything :hmmm: So, the only way that they would feel any pain would be if they contained "souls" or "spirits" somehow, and that's something that we really can't know at this point. And there's the same argument for animals other than humans, but I think in terms of practicality, anyone wanting to end or protest the practice of killing things for consumption ought to start with the most immediate and obvious ones, such as cows screaming when they're being chopped into pieces and that sort of thing.

I saw the term fruitarian in a movie one day(forget the name). It was a comedy,I think.

The main guy was looking for a partner,or something like that, and was interviewing people.Yhen a woman appears and says she is one. He then asks, and she replies ''I only eat fruits that fells from trees, and dead animals that passed away naturally''

His scared face is priceless. Never knew they really existed.

So hel eat an apple or banana but he wont eat like a tomato or a potatoe? That person is a total freak and needs told.

the shit just rots if it doesnt get eaten, if we all decided to adopt this way of life, the waste of perfectly good food would be insane. I refuse to believe it causes physical pain picking fruit/veg whatever, i mean, fucking hell, it must put a strain on their branches...

Each to their own and all that, but it doesnt make it any less mental

I can understand folk being vegetarian (though, these animals would never of existed the first place seeing as the animals we generally tend to eat are bred for that purpose, but Im sure thats a whole nother debate..) what with the animals being all.... alive and stuff...

But... to be all it hurts the plant maaaannnn, its cruellll... the fuck?

Im...uh.... i forgot what i was gunna add there, text message distracted me

It just beggars belief. Im having pizza. with vegetables. and other things that used to be 'alive' and Im damn well gunna enjoy it

He reffered me to a book called The Secret Life of Plants. Don't know how reliable it is though.

I'm an omnivor and the thought of only eating fruit makes me a bit nauscious. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the diet.

There are some spiritual groups, such as Jainism that follow the fruititarian diet. They won't use or eat anything if something else has to die. Some will go as far as not knocking off bugs that bite them. I smash bugs all the time though so I wouldn't fit in with them.

Honestly, I don't see how a person can survive on fruits alone. To have a healthy body you need these five things:

1.) Protein
2.)Carbs
3.) Exorcise
4.) Fruits AND Vegetables
5.) A normal brain function :wacky:

Take one of those these away, and your just being weird(as lew said :lew:)

Supposedly, plants can feel. But honestly, what can we do? Eat fallen fruit for the rest of our lives? No, better plan, take only what we need--don't be greedy and kill/harvest everything just because.

God put these things on the planet so we could live, I won't go around abusing that power, but I'm not gonne stop eating veggies and fruits.

That said, I do understand vegetarians not liking to eat meat... I don't like eating meat either. But, it's how we survived this long... it just has to be done.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel bad when I stomp on a plant or bug, though. :sad3: Cuz, I do... I jus' have a heavy conscious like that. :wacky:

Meh, the thing is though, it's not actually necessary to eat meat. When humans started out in a hunter/gatherer society, they only ate what meat they could hunt down, and there was often a significant amount of time in between each kill where people would go without meat, simply because they couldn't get it, and yet they still managed to survive on other things. And then, when the agriculture system began--i.e., subsistence farming--most people didn't eat very much meat because they used the animals for milk--animals were hard to come by, and they needed to be kept alive for as long as possible in order to be useful. Sometimes people would bleed the animals and drink their blood for a little extra protein, but they didn't do it in significant amounts because they couldn't afford to lose the animal. And nowadays, there are so many other places where you can get protein (beans, for one, are a great source) that you can pretty much live your whole life without eating any meat at all. I mean I've been a vegetarian for 3+ years now and I'm actually the healthiest I've ever been, I lost 35 lbs from cutting all that extra fat out of my diet and I don't feel sluggish all the time like I did when I used to eat meat.

Plants can not feel, they don't have nervous systems. They don't have the ability to feel.

-Thats a very dangerous sentiment, god didn't put oil in the earth for us to use- thinking that he will provide while we destroy the environment is foolish at best.\

Gamingway is correct one one point you don't "need" meat but you do need protein. The main reason our brains blew up in evolution is because our species ate so much protein. Vegetarians need to be very weary (especially women who are pregnant) about getting the proper amount of protein. I think its very admirable for people who want to be vegetarians and its cool that you lost all that weight by doing so. Personally (to parody that fool TO) I just love me some cheesesteak.

yeah I agree. There is the age old saying, "If I live something must die". But I suppose if someone really wants to have a diet of only fruit and grains, then that's their choice. I myself, could never do it. Think of all the sugar they are getting D: That, and I am not a big fan of fruit because I have never been a fan of sweets. I do love strawberries and grapes... but I can't live on just that. I will eat blue berries for their health benefits.

But the guy I met that was a frutarian, he was very skinny and his skin was very pale. He looked a little creepy, like the kind of person you wouldn't want to run into in a dark alley. He was also an artist and muscian. A friend of mine, who is vegan, knew him from art school. He's not part of any spiritual or religious group.

They'll eventually die from lack of malnutrition...

Anyway. Fruits die too... while they aren't the plant itself they are still effecting the life cycle and pre-maturely killing a plant that could have lived. xD (Not that I believe this, I'm just trying to find a way you could mess with them.)

I don't really get it. But you know, they are Extermists and I dislike/hate all extremists, no matter what they stand for.

I could say more, but my post would be SUPER LONG if I got into it...

EDIT!:

First, I'd like to say congrats.

Secondly, I'd like to say it depends on the person. I love eating meat, and that's my choice. Just as you are a vegetarian. And I feel health and I have A LOT of energy.

Also, I agree.

xD

I feel like a killer now. All those fruits and veggies I took off of their branches in such a cold blooded way. Ehh

I could never do that diet though. For a few reasons:

I'd be hungry as hell. My body recently did the switcheroo on me and now I can't stop eating. So that would cause a serious problem for me XD

I'd be bored of the diet very quickly. I like to try new foods and just new things in general, so I would not like this diet because of that.

Finally, my allergic reactions to most fruits. My dear friend Gavin and I were talking about this last night. I wiki'd it and it turns out I might have some sort of sickness. All the symptoms matched up, and the explanations for how they come about also matched up. Kinda freaked about that, but ehh.
