Slut

if you try to stop a word then more attention will be drawn to it and then will probably be used even more. offensive words are words that will never go away. what someone calls you is just there opinion, what you broadcast and prove is all that matters.
Then we can change the context of it. I've seen women actually reply to those words with a "thank you".

This thread is pointless.
Men's domination of women etc etc.
Poor women how bad for them etc etc.
That's all the OP wants.
Sexual politics and Gender politics are so dull.
And more often as not it's women who call other women sluts.
If your ways of contributing to this thread is to act like you're *above it all~ then you can get out. Either that, or just quit being a complete pos altogether. This isn't a thread about what's lame and what makes more sense to talk about. If you want that, then go create one in the spam section.

Everything I've read here makes perfect sense to me.

Actually, while reading, I've been suddenly reminded of my witnessing women actually encouraging these words. Not in bad ways, but I think that they understand that these words can't simply be erased from the dictionary, so they change the context completely. Almost as if "slut" and "whore" are compliments.

I've seen this, and quite frankly if we can't stop the words from being used, we can at least change the context of them.

In an episode of Friends, 'The One that Could Have Been', Monica is fat and has a boyfriend. But, being a virgin, she sleeps with Chandler to get that awkward first time out, while still being with the other guy. She even excitedly says "Hey check me out! I'm a slut!" She said this excitedly, as being fat, she would have otherwise never have gotten another guy to sleep with her, while she was already with one guy.

Some girls do take to being called a slut/whore because it slowly starts to diffuse the original negative meaning, and really it's the best thing we can hope to come out of it if we can't destroy the words.

It makes a hell of a lot of difference in modern society and is certainly relevant in our lives. We live in a culture that educates us to believe that sex is a means of one individual exhibiting dominance over another. This is why some people are so disgusted with the thought that women should actually have a CHOICE in how often they have sex- this is completely at odds with the notion that men should have dominance with all aspects of society. The enormous amount of anonymous political commentators I've seen on CNN hoping for mass prison rape to befall Joran van der Sloot in Peru and how many middle eastern societies continue to punish the victims of rape instead of the perpetrators shows how society still views rape as a means of "enforcing justice" instead an actual crime. This once again goes hand in hand with the notion that women should have no options in when and how they have sex.

Slut shaming is only the the tip of the deep iceberg of disgusting patriarchy that have consumed the lives of millions of women and continues to poison modern society. It's hardly an issue we can afford to ignore.

Personally I don't really use any of these words. Sex is fun, so I don't see any problem with someone who wants to have as much of it as humanly possible. I only really use these words out of irony.

To be honest, I've noticed this too (at least where I'm from) in a way the meaning of the word slut has changed. IMO the word "slut" is more or less the same as "bitch" nowadays, ie a dipshit who happens to be female. It's like how the word "Gay" has changed over the years, it used to mean happy, then homosexual but now it is generally used to describe an annoying situation.

And what if that person doesn't care much for a relationship? I know many people who aren't interested in the idea of possibly getting hurt, or even staying committed, so they sleep around without caring about destroying any chances at any real relationship.
Then that's all up to them. Keep in mind I'm only stating my opinion based on what I've seen in my life.

By this logic, if I'm a competitive poker player, does that mean the experience of playing card games is somehow "devalued" for me?

You're comparing a card game to sex. I did not say that my belief applies to everything.

What the hell? What right do you or anyone else have to judge people based on how often they participate in a purely recreational activity between consenting adults? What right does ANYONE have to harass and degrade them based on how they choose their life?
You missed the other bit I said: I may have my opinions, but I don't care what two people do in the bedroom or how many times they do it. I only bring my opinions on the subject to the front if they ask me to.

EDIT: To rephrase; I obviously do care somewhat otherwise I wouldn't have an opinion, but again; I keep such things to myself unless the other person's asking me what I think.

These terms, and our general male-dominated society, have existed as remnants from our days as hunter-gatherers and the competition among human males for mates.

The average male is instilled with genes that essentially tell him to fuck any and every female he can, and to keep that female from reproducing with other males to spread, and to protect, his genes. Thus, the condemnation of promiscuous females in just about every single society on earth. If she's sleeping around however she likes, she's producing babies from all different kinds of men with all different kinds of genes. To the "alpha male" that has or wants to claim her, this is not okay--not because of the female personally, but because of the genes she's helping to reproduce that are not his.

This primitive behavior hasn't changed much in spite of thousands of years worth of evolution.

Modern women use the term "slut" (derogatory) for other women whom they view as competition for mates. These "sluts" are typically appealing to other males (and what some view as outright submitting to male fantasies--thus getting a 'leg up' in our society, the easy way), but that's just about it.

I think that hostility comes from the primitive fear of not having a mate of our own. If that particular female is out having sex with all these men, just however she likes, we risk her having sex with our future or current mate. If that happened, we'd either lose him (and then be left to fend for ourselves, and our children), or never get the chance to reproduce with him.

The whole thing is really messy.

In my experience, there a many different kinds of "sluts": the fictional ones (watch any beer commercial--she's constructed from the male fantasy of having a willing and capable gene-producing-machine), the constructive ones (women who abuse the average male's subconscious desire to consistently reproduce--they dress in revealing ways and sleep around only to get ahead in society), and the genuine ones (women who just do enjoy sex, aren't willing to settle down, and do as they please).

I think the latter categories get mashed in together a lot, when the driving forces are really very different... It's all pretty complex and not something I always like to touch on.

I'm ranting and not telling you guys anything you don't already know, though, so I apologize. I'm dumb. Haha.

@OP
It's a fucking word... If you think a word like "slut" is at the root of your misogynistic discomfort, think again. Blacks didn't gain equality because people stopped calling them "******s." That usually comes after the equality part.

My point was that it has been addressed in western society. People know that standards are unequal. Therefore this is pointless.

Everyone knows that the standards are unequal. However, a good deal of people feel that having different standards are a GOOD thing, and that men and women are supposed to have different requirements for "healthy" sexual behavior. Hence "stud" is a term applied for sexually promiscuous men, while "slut" and "ho" are terms for sexually promiscuous women.

The whole point of this thread is to show why this sexist tripe is a load of nonsense and why people who promote it should feel ashamed.

No they don't. People don't go around encouraging telling women to not have sex untill they're married etc and at the same time telling guys to fuck as much as they like.

In my experience, I mostly see women using these words to describe other women.

A women gets a promotion at work, the other girl's say it's because she is a slut and sleeps with the boss. A women has more guy friends than girl friends, girls call her a slut. Guys think a certain girl is pretty, other girls call her a whore. If a girl has big breasts, guys call her a whore.

I rarely ever hear guys use these words when discussing a girl. I more often hear them use the word bitch.

these words are thrown around so much that they have pretty much lost their meaning. If someone calls me a slut, I tell them to find a more original insult, and laugh at how desparate they are to upset me. Either that or I respond with "well at least I can get some"

It's not about people not telling these women to not have sex, it's more about... Y'know, they heard about her sleeping with two guys in one day (be it truth or rumour) and they instantly judge without (sometimes) getting the full story.

Uh, yes they do? There's a whole group of them called Republicans, maybe you've heard of them. They also tend to have other sexist social policies like attempting to ban abortion clinics and treating homosexuality as a disease.

Lets see what our good friend Mike Huckabee has to say about whether we should value women for more than just sexual availability:

People do this all the time about all things, if they heard that someone had lied or stolen or whatever.

They attempt to ban abortions on religious grounds and homosexuality has nothing to do with sexism. Obviously they aren't sexist as no one would vote for them.

Everyone knows about the double standards that exist regarding sex. Very few people are saying it's a good thing.

Not what I was getting at and you're nothing but butthurt here. Therefor, irrelevant. Get out.

A few people have already commented on how they find that women are the quickest to call other women sluts and whores, saying the word has lost its true meaning. Depending on who you are and where you are, this isn't always true. From where I stand, it's still a word that has a negative, misogynist affect.

^^
Lol...just read you post man. You find the word to have a "negative, misogynist affect." I'm saying the "word" doesn't perpetuate this but something else that is wrong with society, thus, deleting "slut" from our vernacular doesn't do anything at all to solve the problem. But I'll get out anyway. I think I've had my little FFF binge for the week.

Obviously they aren't sexist as no one would vote for them.

Except the enormous population of privileged sexist men who want to continue this inequality, and the equally large number of women who are either pressured or brainwashed into agreeing with them...

Everyone knows about the double standards that exist regarding sex. Very few people are saying it's a good thing.

Let's see what our "enlightened" society has to say about girls who take pride in their ability to seduce men:

"Naw she's just a minging slag"

"I don't think anyone should take any pride in being a slapper."

"Actually, she sounds like a manipulative tool."

"Or it proves she is useless trash who has no value except as a wet spot."

"but when the day comes that YOU fall for a guy and he finds you disgusting for f*cking around so much... well then, you can take pride in how loose and nasty your vagina is..."

"No not really its not hard for women to seduce men, women really don't have to work that hard to get a guy."

"Most guys don't fall in love with sexually promiscuous girls or women. We like to sleep with them, sure, and sometimes we will buy them things in order to continue sleeping with them, but no guy wants to marry a slut"

"No it means you're a hooker and no girl should ever be prideful about being a hooker."

"you don't have good character and you really have nothing to be proud of. What a low, cheap way to live"

And men who do exactly the same thing, but with women? "Players", "heroes", "awesome", etc. This is nothing new. Sexism is alive and kicking in this country, if you honestly think that people are not supporting a double standard here you are deluding yourself. The average male in America still considers it the sole right of his gender to date multiple partners. As one fellow put it quite succinctly:

"Think of it this way, a key that opens a lot of locks is a master key; a lock that opens to a lot of keys is just a bad lock."

Except the enormous population of privileged sexist men who want to continue this inequality, and the equally large number of women who are either pressured or brainwashed into agreeing with them...
So there's at least 50 million men like you described and another 50 million women like you described. Interesting.

All your quotes are taken out of context etc etc. The status quo is accepted not actively encouraged. Do you expect centuries worth of male domination to be repealed in 30 or so years?

All your quotes are taken out of context etc etc.

Prove it.

The status quo is accepted not actively encouraged. Do you expect centuries worth of male domination to be repealed in 30 or so years?

So you admit that the status quo is accepted. People who do accept this double standard and refuse to change are the problem here. Pretending that people who use words like "slut" and "ho" to deride women are not being sexist, or even worse- that it doesn't happen- is just being ignorant. Why do people choose to use this word? I think this blogger explained it better than I could:

Who is it used by? It's used by men to justify their insecurity about the power they see in women's sexuality. It's used by women to establish their own superiority over other women. It's used by rich people to hold onto and exercise their privilege. It's used by poor people to grasp at having value in a society that often makes them feel invisible. In other words, it's used by people with an agenda. A self-serving agenda. You know, that thing they're accusing you of having by being such a slutty slut? In the real world, the "dirtiest", "easiest" thing anyone can do is degrade another person by feeding into the social and cultural oppression that already exists against them.

Since you apparently don't believe this is a serious problem, here are some personal examples of girls having to suffer through this type of harassment:

Take Tammy, a 16-year-old from Damon, TX, whose classmates called her a slut.

“I felt that people thought I wasn’t worth anything, that they thought of me as trashy. If one person calls you a slut, then all the people they hang around with will, too. Then when you’re alone and thinking to yourself, you realize that someone has called you this. You feel so much turmoil inside. I know I did,” she says.

Aisher says she was stacking chairs in the school dining hall when Virginia Green told her to lengthen her skirt. Mrs Green is then said to have made the ‘slut’ comment before adding that the short skirt was ‘not doing much for your cellulite’.

The remark was overheard by staff and pupils at Bohunt School in Liphook, Hampshire.

Last night, Aisher’s mother Amanda, 36, said: ‘I couldn’t believe that a teacher would use such foul and disgusting language to a pupil.

‘It’s the kind of thing that you might expect another pupil to say but teachers should know better. It’s tantamount to bullying.

‘Aisher has a birthmark on her thigh which I think Mrs Green must have mistaken for cellulite.

‘For one of her teachers to make a comment like that about it was really hurtful and she was very upset.’

The mother-of-three added: ‘Teachers should be giving children confidence for their future lives, not speaking to them in such a despicable way.’

Slut-shaming is real, it is a problem, and it is worth paying attention to. If you don't care simply because it doesn't affect you, then don't comment on it.

Prove it.
That's impossible as you've not sourced them at all. Unless they're placed in context they're worthless.

BLACK POWER
It may be a nice quote but it's hardly logical.
Only they know why they've chosen that particular word. You certainly don't. They're offensive words, but you can't claim that buy using them they're helping to repress women etc. Faggot is an offensive term, but it exclusively homophobic? Not at all. Fairytale of New York is a good example. Your blogger is just a typical liberal, always looking for signs of society oppressing minorities.

Wow some bullied poor tammy, why did they use the term slut? Because it's offensive. Or is it because of the PHALLOCENTRIC MALE HIERARCHY? etc etc
Poor Aisher, not only does she have a stupid fucking name, someone judged her because of what she was wearing poor her.

Slut-shaming is real, it is a problem, and it is worth paying attention to. If you don't care simply because it doesn't affect you, then don't comment on it.
Exactly, all people that disagree should be made to shut up. There is only one true ideology, it is mine. etc etc etc etc etc etc
