vB Update?

Well done, now we're gunna go get one *wallops Julius and Busta*

Im amazed I havent had any pop ups about viuses and shit though, I normally get the brunt of the forums issues :hmph:

I have had the odd pop up about allowing pop ups though...and im like whut? xD

Java was acting up for me yesterday when I was a guest. But when I log in everything seems fine. Really weird tbh.

The Java was the virus. But as Jace pointed out, LG will deleted the code. And by looking at the source it seems like he already has.

A few of us, maybe more, kept getting pop-up warnings about malware, spyware, virus warnings, etc. We kept capturing screenshots of the different pop-ups we were getting.
Odd...must be because I have my browser settings to block every pop-up window notification. I don't get why I can't see these messages. I guess I'll never see them now.

What I haven't seen in forever is the "Server is Busy" messages.
Do I sense some kind of nostalgia in those words, BustyBoy? :randompoke:

A download of 3.8 or 4 requires the same license fee.

I don't think I'd be comfortable asking for donations.

Well, I'd be willing to donate one, but if you're just going to treat it as a security update I don't see the point. Frankly this site has huge upgrade potential, it's just stuck on the limitations of our current forum software.

One mod I'd really like to see added to the board is a Triple Triad system. The new one is pretty sleek looking and you can actually view replays of old matches. Since it gives rewards based on post count it would certainly encourage more activity.

I'm not quite sure where LG is getting this money from. As long as you still have a valid license to download updates from vb, upgrading to 3.8.x would be free. It's only updating to 4.0 (after browsing the vb site) that you need a new license at 175 to update... which isn't what we're asking, considering a lot of the stuff we have probably wouldn't work right away.

And even if it did cost something (which I'm fairly sure it doesn't, after double checking my sauces) I'm sure a few members wouldn't mind forking over a tenner, especially those who are thoroughly active here. I know I wouldn't.

Also, I found these two pages quite helpful as there's other people in our shoes. Given your account, you could voice your concerns about this change, Lord Golbez, and see if they could assure you on it. The main thing being though, that you create a test site to make sure everything works out fine in the end.

Should be updated.............we'll be able to find out more about members on their public profile..........Oh yeah can I point out something else?...........I don't know if it's just me but when I type in something in the shoutbox it actually writes in the shoutbox 2 seconds later..........2 seconds you may not think thats a lot, but when you write a lot it takes ages. Also another thing on the shoutbox, is that sometimes mine doesn't update, i this just for me as well?..........could you add a reload button to it?

But if this is all my problem than don't bother!

The 2 seconds delay it might be a lag. Your SB not updating is because of the auto iddle settings. That and maybe the lag. :neomon:

Besides the shoutbox, the admin here do have to take into account that the members would like it and it will really only be a good thing for the forum.

We get it Jimmeh :mokken: You're against the update. But others would prefer to have it.

you obviously didnt read "but most of all..."

itll be interesting to see (assuming lg goes through with the upgrade) how many people actually use the new features (and for how long) and just how much safer we all are.

There are other ways to improve the site layout than upgrading the whole site if LG doesn't want to. Those nearly 600 links at the bottom of the main page could be removed. They serve absolutely no purpose other than to slow down the front page. Next, we could change the sitemap of the title image into separate <div> elements that would load a lot faster and be easier to replace. Finally, there's nothing stopping us from adding more games to our current arcade mod. All of these could be implemented without having to install so much as a plugin.

okay jimmeh, thanks for your contribution

firstly its called an imagemap. secondly using div tags would (probably) require absolute positioning which is not the greatest of ideas and hardly less fiddly than an imagemap. regarding the links at the bottom...i dunno what to say. theyre archives. ive never clicked them, i never look at them so for all i know theyre useless? games in the arcade...fuck knows, i dont play any of the games but id be interested to know how many people actually do.

ps: i saw that edit busta.

It probably just involves editing some templates. I'd got prodding around, seeing if there are any "archive" links in the coding. Also ask LG, I'm assuming he may have added them on purpose.

No, DIV tags do not require absolute positioning. You just make each specific game link be a square image and align them in the bottom right. The main background can simply be the background image of a box containing them all. It wouldn't be particularly complex coding wise.

So what's with the no update? I can safely say that the fair way to go about things is to just open up a poll and see how the members/staff decide on things. Maybe even two polls, one for members and one for staff, however both should be viewable to everyone. Staff may have different opinions about the upgrade than most members, but if staff outweigh the members in a 'no' then it's kinda unfair, even if there would be, say 30 members for yes, versus most of staff (what, 10 people?) who would all say no.

Just a suggestion. We won't really get anywhere else otherwise. Plus it would be a good opportunity to start fresh with the suggestion and screen cap features from other forums and show people what we mean by "Thanks" system or visitor messages.

Agreed. Those links were there to fool the search engine bots. At least I think they were. Not only are they annoying. But they are hideous to see every time you reload a page. :monster:

Is it even up to date? Because it seems to me there should be far more than 595... pages? Members? What is it exactly..
