vB Update?

An upgrade to 3.8.X would be perfectly fine, but not 4.0.X guys, the RPG is a huge form of entertainment, it's not worth losing that for, we could still get updated to 3.8.X and have a bunch of new stuff, and be safer from hackers.

But, everyone wouldn't have to re-register if the whole site got updated like that, would they...? >.>'
 
Afaik you never need to re-register when updating... but to be fair, is the RPG even working right now? Anytime I go and click there to see what it is/does, it's unavailable... wouldn't now/soon be a goodish time to do it while the RPG service is down and can't really be all that ruined?
 
If we upgrade To a better version what other feautures will we get? Like how will it make the site even better than it is now? :hmmm:

There's nothing wrong with the RPG Inferno, every now and then when it has run it's course it gets reset, the system taken offline and then worked on to get it ready to reopen with a fresh start.

The RPG Directors can access the RPG Inferno freely even when the system is set to offline, it allows for it to have areas be finished for it some so there are places to go when the RPG is opened to any of the members of the community (that have 50+ posts). ;)

So just have patience, it'll be back to being accessible with time, then it will be providing entertainment again to the people of the FFF community. :monster:
 
I heard that there could be some complications with the RPG inferno if we did upgrade, and tbh, the forums are good now, so I don't see the need for change. Sure, Visitor Messages would be neat and allow us to converse privately on the forums, but the SB kind of facilitates that, so I am not sure what upgrading would truly add that the forum really needs :hmmm:
 
I think the changes just seem totally cosmetic instead of actually making a real difference. More colour and appearance oriented than actually increasing efficiency. Seems kinda pointless.

Key features in the latest vBulletin that 3.6 lacks:

-Members can post from their Facebook account directly if the admins allow it
-Human verification is built in (prevents spambots)
-Mods can post notices for specific usergroups
-"Friendly" URL system (increases search rating)
-User groups (clubs that any members can create and join)
-User albums
-Visitor messages
-Forum sidebars/blocks
-Thread tagging
-Mass spam management
-XML sitemaps (also help with search ratings)

And those are just the ones I found in the main ACP menu. There are an enormous amount of tweaks and updates between the versions that make an upgrade seriously worth it, and while going directly to 4 isn't reasonable right now, 3.8 would be a big step. It would also give us access to the latest mods and security fixes, whereas right now our forum is pretty much stuck in terms of updates.
 
There's all those ^ in addition to

Customizable post bits: such as colour/font
Open ended profile questions (Such as Sex, doesn't have to be male/female, you can edit it your own sexual saying :awesome: )
And completely customizable profiles (which may be a pain in the ass to some), which allows you to customize the fonts, colours, borders, and even back ground image for your profile..

There's a lot out there that we don't have.
 
The $175 cost is obviously not something I'd be looking forward to, but as others have said it's mainly an issue of the mods, skin, and RPG. I had believed the RPG would stop functioning if we went to 3.8 - but it seems based on this thread that it may in fact work, just be buggy?

I was initially planning on upgrading after release of the new RPG, but these virus warnings some people are getting are making me consider an earlier upgrade. I was able to fix the earlier ones but I haven't got the new ones myself so I can't isolate the issue. I don't know how many people are actually getting these or if an upgrade would correct them, since the source is probably not something directly related to 3.6 but instead file permissions or something like that.

Coming off of another site, I can confirm that the game does work normally in version 3.8. It will NOT work in version 4, but this is to be expected. The upgrading process is a bit tricky but I can offer advice if you'd like (though you shouldn't have any problems). Upgrading to 3.8 doesn't cost anything, so I don't see cost being an issue, but if you want to go further you could ask for donations.

Personally I don't know about the RPG, I haven't been to another forum that has something like it. But if cost is in issue (which is shouldn't be since you'd be upgrading to 3.8 which is all we're asking) you very well could start asking for Donations.

Anyone who donates, say, a minimum of 10$ could get a cute little Donator Usertitle, and have a Gold star or something. I've seen other forums implement this, and it gives the Donators something at least to not feel totally used for just giving you money and not getting anything in return.

I don't know about the virus bugs going on, but I got one the other day for trying to few Today's Posts. =/

Upgrading to vb 4 would obviously be too much, and screw up a lot. It's still having issues itself and we would expect a looooooot of bugs. But 3.8 has already been out for a couple years, most of the bugs they've encountered have been fixed by now.
 
Is it? I wasn't completely sure. =/ Either way through upgrading too much too soon, might be... too much. :monster: Is 4.0.x drastically different than 3.8?
 
Does anyone have a link to a forum that has the version we're talking about?

Having just read this, it's probably worth noting that if we do upgrade it's most likely as a security update, mainly. Whether or not new mods or which ones would be added would have to be discussed after it was upgraded. :wacky:
 
Not that a security upgrade is bad or nothing... I'm still getting messages from AVG every now and again if I refresh a page, that's something's wrong, it's all virused up, and have to close and try again. =/
 
Lord Golbez has been working on this trying to find out the problem with it from some of the other staff who have taking screenshots of the messages they've been getting and I believe Mercurial found out where it was and LG should now have it fixed if not very soon.

I haven't gotten any of those cryptic server messages in ages. Not that I miss them anyway. Oh well, I guess it won't hurt to wait some more, right?
 
A few of us, maybe more, kept getting pop-up warnings about malware, spyware, virus warnings, etc. We kept capturing screenshots of the different pop-ups we were getting.

What I haven't seen in forever is the "Server is Busy" messages.
