I really don't see what's so special about him. People hold him in the same regard that I hold Bellamy (in my pants! ziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnng.), but I've yet to see anything admirable/interesting about him.

Is it the monkeyman design? the accent? the white usher look?

please keep spoilers to yourself, as I haven't beaten the game yet. >.>

I couldn't even imagine it having anything to do with character development since FFXII was so straightforward there was fuck all to do with that. D:

I'd rather do his dad tbh :monster:

I think it must be his accent, people rather like it, but as English accents go, I've heard better.

You're right his character doesn't develop. Which is not unique for FFXII.
His back story is one big loooong cliche
It's pretty much a shitty version of Luke Skywalker. zOMG his dad R one of teh bad guys

I think that one reason that people might like him is because the game is so devoid of characters with personalities, the fact that Balthier has a shitty yet existent personality elevates him to awesomeness.
He also kind of takes on the role of leader of the party, many people see him as the main character. It is a pathetic reason for liking him.

He does do something amazing at the end, but it is total bullshit. It is a farce, you can't really take his character seriously, as SE has made him immortal. It is as if he is exempt from reality( it may be a fantasy game, but that is not an excuse). SE pretty much makes one desperate attempt to make a character great, they fail miserably. I can't elabourate as you haven't finished the game.

Well for one thing hes a mixture of a noble man and a thief and Square enix whated to come up with a different new character and Balthier is what they lead to. A fair few people like Balthier and I don't think hes too bad a character since he kind of leads the story through like the 'leading man' he says he is.

He's the leading man, what else is there to say?

I'm having a hard time being able to tell if that was a crack at the lack of character development or fanboy/fangirl-ism. :wacky:

To be honest, with the characters, I see the same thing that came up in FFVI. It doesn't seem like there's any main character at all, and you mislead yourself to believe Locke was the main character as most did with Vaan. If anyone had to be the main character, I would've thought it was Ashe since the story's about taking back dalmasca and shit an d because she poses the most significance to the story. xD

I sort of agree. When he is first thrown into the game he is too much of an ass to actually like. As it continues he and vaan stop despising each other and thats pretty much all the character development square enix can be bothered to spend on this pretty random addition to the game.

Im liking his english accent though:cool:

Monkeyman design? Oh, do you mean Vaan? =P

Hmm, for me it's his accent, I think. It's quite sexy. His overall image is also quite appealing - the whole "sky pirate" thing. But seriously, it really depends on one's taste. Sure I thought his character could've used some more development, but that didn't stop me from liking him. Why? Gee I'm not sure really...didn't really stop to think about it. Perhaps because I did love the way he acted like an ass sometimes, yet not really showing any hint of emotion regarding his feelings, whatsoever. None of that, "I'm a very sweet and nice boy" in your face.

no, I mean balthier. :P

He thinks too highly of himself. And yes, I would also do his father :wacky:

I like Balthier do to his accent and his somewhat badassness. lol. zhe's the leading man as he would say. =D.

I don't think the game would've been the same without him.

I believe the term your looking for is self proclaimed leading man, he is overly egotistical , he wears a stupid ass outfit and his back story is crap to say the least and he is useless in combat...infact the only good thing about him is that he owns the Strahl

I don't think so, honestly. lol.

He was important as he was the son of Cid. Also, he helped them through Old Archades to get to the new part.

Him and Fran also helped Vaan out in the beginning. I think he's quite useful.

Does not stop him from being a snobby little know it all, with an irritating personality. Sure, he helped out, and was important ish to the story, but I can't stand him, at all. So second time round, playing through XII, I only used him when I HAD to.

I thought his personality was pretty great. I mean, it was a bit snobby and whatnot. But the story wouldn't have been the same without him.

Squall was the same way, was he not? At least in the beginning he was.

lol at the "useless in combat" bit. I really haven't found anyone useless in a fight in FFXII, due to them being able to equip any weapon, and the gambit set up. Plus, Balthier has quite high strength & defense stats. If you think he's useless in a fight, you're probably doing something wrong.

I can't believe people are dissing Balthier!! :gasp:

He is one of the good characters in the game, I'm not really bothered by his accent seeing as I'm English and I'm used to it haha. But I love the way he is, he isn't always an ass as he can be a gentleman, and he has loads of links to the game such as Cid and Ba' gamman, He has the Strahl, and if it wasn't for him the storyline wouldn't have ended the way it did seeing as he had the plans on how to get to places and stuff, he also cares greatly for Fran. In my opinion he is the leading man. More than Vaan could be.

So what if he was the leading man?
It's like saying Hitler was awesome because he was the leader of Germany. Or Bush is teh secks because he is the leader of America.
I responded to the rest of that and to what everyone else has said in my first post.

He's better than the rest and as we all know FFXII didn't have any epic characters like previous FF.I like him for his overall style, clothes(I always notice the clothes' design),appearance(meh),accent, how he acts.I can't say personality as this games doesn't focus on the characters too much so I pick to stay neutral regarding his personality.

But his personality is clearly obvious throughout, how can you not pick up on it? You said you like him for how he acts, so in a way, that does have something to do with his personality.

I do like how he acts, but his personality is not complicated as to make him more interesting.(not that he's not already interesting enough)
Hope this clears somewhat my mess.
