EDIT: Thanks to Mitsuki for moving the thread ;)

Romance is not an uncommon theme in RPGs, however there are just some pairings that the game developers create that I can’t forgive.

I'm not saying that I hate the idea of there being romance in video games, but I've just seen really crappy pairings that come together for no apparent reason except by popular demand.

So here are a couple of pairings I don’t like:

FFVIII: Squall and Rinoa

squall-rinoa.jpg

Okay, I honestly tried to give this pairing a shot. I really did. But I can’t accept Squall and Rinoa getting together, and it pisses me off even more that Square claims FFVIII to be the game based around a romantic story.

Well, it was a really crappy romantic story I’m afraid to say.

At first, I could see it happening. Rinoa was a lively, passionate leader of a small rebel faction, and Squall was the stoic, reluctant leader. Opposites attract, right?

But then we find out that Rinoa was already involved with Seifer, Squall's rival. She even says she loves him after everyone thinks the blond is dead.

So here's a young woman who was already in a serious relationship before meeting up with Squall. And with the way things turned out, it seems that Rinoa decided to ditch Seifer after he became evil due to Ultimecia's influence and go for the next best thing: Mr. Pretty-in-Leather

And Squall showed no romantic feelings towards Rinoa for half the game! She was his client that he had to obey for an indeterminate amount of time. That was it.

With all the other issue of the Sorceress, Garden, becoming SeeD Commander, and other stuff that happened, it wouldn't have been impossible for Squall to even FORGET about Rinoa had she just stayed out of harms way.

And here's a popular theory among anti-Squall/Rinoa fans: Isn't it a little strange that only AFTER Rinoa got knocked out and got her sorceress powers did Squall become the love-sick puppy, eh? Going as far as to walk to Esthar while carrying Rinoa on his back, jumping into space for her, that dramatic CGI where he cuts her out of containment, and everything thereafter? It's not hard to think that maybe Rinoa forced her emotions on Squall and made him her ideal knight. Just something to think about it...

.hack//G.U.: Haseo and Atoli

haseo_atoli.jpg

No, no, no. I will not negotiate my position. This pairing was so horribly cliché and unnecessary.

Here we have Haseo, someone who is trying to find a way to bring back Shino, a female player that he really cares for. Already here's someone in his heart.

Then we get shy, naive Atoli who wants Haseo to change his some-what ruthless ways and lack of appreciation of the game. Hey, I'm a chick, but if someone wants me to changed to such extremes, even I'm gonna get pissed.

Then Atoli gets all pissy 'cause Haseo doesn't "look at her". Why should he?!

I admit, she incurred my pity in vol 2 when the gamers find out more about her in real life, but that was still no reason she and Haseo should get together. Other characters had some pretty shitty real lives too, you know.

Eventually, the two end up having to spend time with each other (being epitaph users and such) fighting against AIDA and Cubia. But there still isn't enough between them to jump to romance.

And here's my main issue with this pairing: Why does it have to be Haseo that has to be there for Atoli and such, eh? He already has a bunch of other problems to deal with, AND has feelings for Shino all through the three games (and other people *grins* Tell me the scene after beating Cubia in vol 3 wasn't yaoi fan service, I dare you).

And at the end of vol 3, I was a little mad at Shino when she basically tosses Haseo aside and tells him to go after another girl. All the more reason he finds himself a dude *firm*

Legend of Dragoon: Dart and Shana

legend01.jpg

No r-e-a-s-o-n for them to get together. Dart left the village when he was 18 and Shana was 13. He had no feelings for the girl at all. Then he comes back, Shana is a legal adult, and even then he feels nothing much for her, but Shana is all head over heels for him.

And guess what? Everyone thinks they should be together!

So Dart is pretty much forced to be with her 'cause everyone says so. Oh yeah, very romantic *rolls eyes*

Chrono Cross: Serge and Kid

cc120a.jpg

Okay, how did romance even come into the picture here between the two? I understand that the idea of two people from different universe coming together is all nice and such, but hey, how come people forgot that Serge ALREADY had a girlfriend?! Pretty lil' thing that beat the crap out of monsters with a spatula ^^

And out of no where gamers found out about Kid's painful past and whatever; that isn't a good enough reason that she and Serge get together.

Now, I’ll end with the few pairings that I did like in video games (aka, just a reason to show more pics :P)

FFIX: Zidane and Garnet

FFX: Tidus and Yuna

FFX-2: Shuyin and Lenne

Lenne%20&%20Shuyin.jpg

Grandia III: Yuki and Alfina

Well, I guess to end I'll just say this: It's a good thing there's such thing as fans to create the pairings we all want, as you can tell from my avatar ^^

The .hack game series sucked too much ass for me to care about the characters. A lot like Tales of Legendia, but worse.

Never watched the .GU anime series, though. It's amazing how it's an interesting enough anime, but the games suck so much ass it's not funny.

it r carp, maek me waste mai money on shitty rental >: (

because this is spam i cba writing a lot so

there is nothing wrong with squall and rinoa.
some people dont like squall and some people dont like rinoa but they can gtfo:neomon:
her relationship with seifer wasnt serious, she was 16,
and they were originally going to make a love triangle with seifer squall and rinoa but then didnt, that explains most of what you said

wrong, before you commented on squall's personality, he is stoic, shy and had been hurt by sis leaving, he was never going to start a relationship, rinoa had to do all the work to get squall to even respond a little. Plus squall saves rinoa from death at the end of disc 2

:omg: Rinoa is in a coma, of course she wasnt forcing her feelings onto squall, because she was unable to drive the relationship forward during that time squall realised he had to. thats why he takes rinoa to esthar and saves her in space, because he loves her.
not because she is a sorceress using evil mind control powers on squall.

URGH. Rinoa and Squall just...they just suck. Their scenes together were just painful to watch.

Glad you like ZidanexGarnet though, those 2 are my favourite canon FF couple ^__^

garnetxsteiner is better :elmo:

that was a joke, right L!?

I totly disagree with the Yuki and Alfina pairing. it seemed so cliched. I would've like Yuki and Donna better.

I agree w/ you on everything else.

its a good thing you put this in the spam section!

that was a joke, right L!?

notrly, seeing creepy old guys do 14 year old children turns me on. :neomon:

It's a shame you put this in the spam section...I really like it...

Squall and Rinoa
Ok...I have to admit I am overly critical of this couple. I thought a lot of events in the game were cheesy. I thought the romance was immature. I got sick and tired of having to rescue her all the time. I never envisioned a person like her with a guy like him...
But overall...I'm okay with their relationship...it doesn't make me cringe like it used to.

Dart and Shana
I don't think that Shana and Dart were a legit couple either. Apparently they have some kind of back-story together, but even with what the game tells you, it isn't much. All throughout the first mission to rescue her from prison...I was just...unable to understand why he would run after her other than the fact that maybe they were just childhood friends, and he's a very compassionate guy.

Serge and Kid
Yeah...I can see where you're coming from, but even after I passed the game a few times, I just never saw them as a couple...as in...I don't think the game made them out to be a serious couple.

Zidane and Garnet
This has to be one of my favorite pairings in FF history. Their relationship had perfect progression. Of course, as with most of these games, you automatically asume that the two main characters will wind up together...but this is one pairing that I thought was truly "genuine".
Not to mention that they actually made sense together.

Tidus and Yuna
...Yeah, they're alright. All I can say is that the end of the game was perfect...that's all...that's what made me think they were a good couple...don't ask why. lol.

Serge and Kid: Man are you damn serious? I played the game twice and never, I say never, I saw anything in the game that pointed them out to be a couple, they were just friends.

Squall and Rinoa: I give you an extra point for that, because Rinoa was kind of annoying and never quit being a pest even though Squall constantly (but indirectly) tells her to GTFO. Oh and your theory of Rinoa forcing Squall to feel something for her is not valid, because she was in COMA.

Dart and Shana: I actually never had any trouble with that couple. They were childhood friends, but I've seen a lot of childhood friends ending up married, many, many times :wacky:

Oh and by the way, I guess this was the closest forum for this thread that I could find: http://www.finalfantasyforums.net/the-world-is-square.html

Unless we don't have any :sad2:
Too bad, good topic, maybe next time :elmo:

This is too good to be in spam. ;)

-Moved to Gold Saucer-

I'll post my views later.

Squall & Rinoa: I've never liked this couple, from the very start, because there was just...absolutely no chemistry between them. Even during those hurl-worthy romance scenes, it just didn't seem at all right, it seemed botched, forced, and insipid.

For half the game, Squall seems as though he really just can't STAND her, and suddenly she's unconscious and he goes: "I r luv u! <3" I remember playing the game when I was 9 years old, and even at that time, I just went: "...Are you serious?"

Honestly, I think the fact that Squall has to play hero, was one of the only things holding that relationship together. Perhaps without the constant heroism and the feeling like she really needs him, and not the other way around...their relationship might not survive.

And, just one more note. I will forever be creeped out by the fact that had fate been different, Rinoa and Squall could have been brother and sister. That could have just been Square's way of trying to connect the two since they weren't orphans together...but it just creeped me out if nothing else.

Sophia & Fayt [Star Ocean 3]: Okay, this couple just creeped me out, a lot. They were cousins, yet they hinted at a relationship between the two. I never beat the game, so, it's possible they actually WERE a couple, and if that's the case...that's just wrong. D=

I disagree. I enjoyed .hack//G.U. very much even though there were a bunch of references to other things I had no clue about. The only crappy thing was that the game could've been confined to one complete release rather than the three games it was; it's all about marketing on the companies part

Okay, valid points, but it depends on interpretation I think.

I don't know anything about this possible love-triangle thing, but how come when everyone thought Seifer was dead, she said "I think I loved him" and adds after Selphie's comment that she still loves him even though he's "dead".

And at the end of Disc 3 and the beginning of Disc 4, the brief scene between Seifer and Rinoa was pretty heavy and tense; albeit Rinoa was probably scared shit-less, but at least on Seifer's part there appeared to be residual emotions.

I'll give you credit about Rinoa's initiative, however Squall only saved Rinoa because everyone was telling him he was the only one who could; you can tell he was too worried about the whole Garden and it's students rather than one civilian.

Remember when we saw certain events from Rinoa's POV after Squall met up with Ellone in the escape pod in outer space in Disc 3? We see that she was conscious at the time she became comatose after they party beats Edea, and we see the first glimpse of Ultimecia.

So physically she was dead to the world, but maybe she was still aware of everything.

URGH. Rinoa and Squall just...they just suck. Their scenes together were just painful to watch.

Of course, what's more classic than the thief from a another planet and a fake princess ;)

The reason why I liked Yuki and Alfina was that although it seemed like they would get together, it flowed more naturally as a result of their own emotions. No one was forcing them together; their attraction was a subconscious thing, and the first mentioning of their love was through some one else's voice (Yuki's best friend I think...)

It's a shame you put this in the spam section...I really like it...

Yeah, a lot of people forget that Julia and Laguna had a thing going on for a while; and doesn't Rinoa freakishly resemble Laguna o_O

Sophia and Fayt are really just next door neighbors/friends. Sophia just calls Fayt's parent her uncle and aunt just for whatever reason. But the two aren't related by blood.

SO3 had "pair endings", so Fayt could end up with whoever has the most affection or whatever. It was a little implied that Sophia has a thing for Fayt, but Fayt himself doesn't really push past friendship with her. There actually isn't much romance with Fayt and any other character truthfully.

This is pretty hard since I approve of most romance between the main characters in games I've played so far.

But I'll agree that Dart and Shana's romance was a little icky. I didn't really feel any chemistry between the two, especially since Dart was so adamant to treat her like a baby sister. Their relationship changes eventually, but I felt that it came out of nowhere, although I suppose there were a few hints here and there, albeit somewhat tenuous.

Justin and Feena's (Grandia)
romance was sweet enough, and I admit that there was indeed a strong connection...but personally, I didn't like those two as a couple as much. =/ It's just bleh. It's probably the age. Any romance under 16...I just don't take seriously enough...sorry if I offend anyone here. >.> I just viewed Justin and Feena as mere kids. I know that there are also serious relationships with young ones, but we're talking about video games here so my viewpoints kinda alters a bit every now and then.

Lloyd and Collette. (Tales of Symphonia)
I realize that the romance between them was vague, and I'm not really sure if they cleared it up or not, but from what I remember, it was certainly blooming - to a point that you can almost call it official. Now, I don't like this pairing at all. Collette is way too klutzy and quite annoying, while Lloyd plays the big hero and quite the spontaneous one...it just doesn't fit, in my opinion. Something's missing, but I just don't know what. Could be personality clashes, who knows? All I know is that I didn't enjoy their relationship throughout the game.

And that's all for now. Can't really think of anything else at the moment.

The whole "Rionoa could be Squall's sister" theory was disproved in another thread. Rinoa was the daughter of Julia and General Carway. Raine and Laguna were Squall's parents. Laguna only met Julia a few times, not enough to do something important, and knowing how nervous Laguna was near Julia, he would feel paralyzed and acting dumb :wacky:

Now back to Dart and Shana, at least it is better than Squall and Rinoa. Because I've seen countless couples that, before being together, have constant arguing with each other, treat each other like shit, and then they end up together. The same with childhood friends, they sometimes end up together, funny :)
