The Centaur Club!

Centaurs have become a meme on FFF’s Discord (and everywhere else, apparently) for some reason. So here is a thread for all of our favourite centaur memes, art, facts, whatever. :)

Feel free to register interest in official membership or to participate, but DaggerTribal must be here by default.

Our Club Rules
  • Do not attend any Lapith parties
  • Do not get too drunk
  • Do be like handy Chiron rather than the majority of centaurs
  • Do not be like Chiron in the sense of clumsily getting poisoned and dying
  • No Hydra venom anywhere near here at all - it isn't worth it
  • Normal forum and club rules apply.

Most important rule: No neighsayers, please. This is for centaur-friendly people only!

I will set the mood with a lovely drawing of a centaur character I created on the spot within ten seconds and named Cleon the Centaur.

Good evening fellow Centaurs and Centauresses! I'm honored to be auto-joined to, what is now officially, the best club ever! Do we get Centaur names too?! I'm not excited, you're excited.

Here’s another quick picture of a Centaur I’ve just decided is named Po.

Welcome to Centaur Club!

If you want an official Centaur name then that sounds like an excellent idea! I'll add a member section to the first post and then we can go wild (but not too wild, considering our centaur context).

Here are a few centaur things from recent days.

Crim is a great artist in general but these FFVII Remake centaurs are certainly a unique idea!

And then there's this:

A few of my favorites. Not sure the sources:

I think someone in Discord said that this was incorrect, that technically this is a Man-man.

DaggerTribal Have you thought about your personal centaur name yet?

For me, while I think my Cleon the Centaur is a perfect centaur, he is not me.

I thought about something like Eubotrys (with a meaning of something like 'good grapes') because of Dionysos.... But then I figured that might sound euphemistic.

Eustippos ('good stomper') is another possibility. I'm not sure if I'm feeling it though! I guess I could just be Clippity-Clop or something.

I was having a harder time thinking a name up since apparently there isn't very many female centaurs out there :8F: Which I learned a lot about why after my brisk stroll through Google and your Ixion article here!

Honestly Clippity-Clop is an amazing name and you should seriously consider looking into getting a legal name change. I'm ranking it high up there with Ponysephony. Get it? Persephone?

Ahem, anyway. I've no idea, I need more time! Any good female-Centaur recommendations?

I'm glad you found the Ixion article useful and enjoyed it! It means a lot when people do read those articles.

Ponysephony is a good one! :argor:

Female centaurs (centaurides) don't appear very often in literature. I think the most prominent (and the only name I can recall) is Hylonome and I think she's only really given a mention in Ovid's Metamorphoses (a Roman poem). Hylonome participated in the battle with the Lapiths and was married to the centaur Cyllarus. When he was slain in the battle she was overcome with grief and fell on the same javelin which slew her spouse. So I guess they were literally joined together in death...

In art I think female centaurs appear more often, but even then this is rare. There might be some (contested) classical Greek examples but most of them are Roman. I think people started to depict them slightly more frequently because they started to imagine the centaurs living their lives (not just raping and pillaging, or acting as a doctor/mentor), and figured that centaurs needed a female counterpart and children just like any animal.

This one is a Roman mosaic from the 4th Century AD (held at Tunis).

The most female centaurs I've ever seen in one place, however? Disney's Fantasia!

This may well have been my first introduction into centaurs, and Greek myth in general on reflection. I watched Fantasia on repeat as a child. Looking at this again now, they have borrowed a lot from the Roman developments in particular.

Their names aren't mentioned, but according to wiki the female centaurs in the animation that were given names were the (now cut) controversial racial stereotype ones, so that's not a good look. Only one other female centaur has an official name: Melinda the blue centaur with blonde pigtails.

I guess the 'Mel' part might relate to honeybees and sweetness in terms of a Greek name. Like Melissa.

EDIT - Just flicked through the above clips and the scene with Melinda isn't included amongst them. Here we go:

I was just watching that clip from Fantasia the day before you posted!

It seems like a missed opportunity with there not being very many appearances for female centaurs in literature, horses having always been viewed as a strong, powerful & majestic. No room for majestic Centaurides?!

Maybe I can be Marejestic... or Maredith. :tehe:

I agree that it is a missed opportunity, but Greek monsters and mythical beings were often seen as either male or female depending on the type of horror that they were going for. The sirens were female (aside from a few male examples in sculpted objects), as were the gorgons, harpies, and so on. Symbolised here could be the perceived wicked temptations of women, their evil/corrupting stares, or their snatching of property. On the male side you have the satyrs, cyclopes, and centaurs (apart from the examples discussed). These tend to symbolise untempered, animalistic qualities in an uncivilised, brutish man. In some ways the monsters symbolise the extremes of men and women in Greek ideas, and things sometimes developed along those lines and so only rarely were alternative gender equivalents considered.

Sure, the satyrs were accompanied by the female Maenads or the nymphs in their revels with Dionysos, but they weren't quite satyr equivalents.
Instead, many of these creatures didn't care what 'species' of monster they were and tended to lust after humans or humanlike immortals anyway. Polyphemos (the cyclops Odysseus meets) didn't have a cyclops girlfriend but he fell in love with and pursued a sea nymph instead (his affections were not reciprocated). Likewise, the centaurs were typically attempting to carry off human women.

I think this is why it is only later that we start to get "What if?" scenarios and greater experimentation with genders for these monsters, and with that the older meanings behind some of them could transform into something new. Some of the accounts could become more sympathetic, more diverse and experimental.

Maybe I can be Marejestic... or Maredith. :tehe:
I like those! Maredith in particular seems to work. Let me know if you are confirmed on either of those and I can add it to the table. Names can be changed at any time, of course!

I thought of another possibility for me: Neighthan Drake.

Just came to me. Then I realised that I probably need to spend longer thinking of a proper name. Who knew that thinking up a name for a centaur persona would be difficult?

I think I like Maradith! I think I'll stick with it before any of the other several club members that have also joined take it!

Neighthan Drake has a pretty cool ring to it too  I think we need a list of all these amazing names we reined in after hoofing all the work. All the neighsayers will laugh at us until they have a nightmare of a time thinking up a name of their own! (Also Nightmare is a cool name!)

I doodled a Centaur Zidane today when I was using the phone. :britt:

Centaur Zidane! I demand to be allowed into your centaur club, even though I have Atlas as my avatar. :mokken:

That is fantastic and exactly the sort of masterpiece I'd hoped to see develop from this club!

I have added your new name to the list, and for now I have put 'Neighthan Drake' as mine but I'll think of a better one in time. I've also added the other suggestions under the table for people to peek at for inspiration!

Congratulations! You are now the third member of the centaur club! Welcome to the horde (of three)!
Demanding is very centaur-like behaviour. It is known.

Let me know if you have any ideas about your personal centaur name.

Not going to lie. That is exactly what happened!

Also love the rather brilliant touch of having a peanut with a monocle and a top hate (hence English) being banned on Liv's T-shirt.

Will Liv stay long enough to become a Centaur herself? Or is this where the tale ends?

I was hoping you'd go for 'My Lovely Pony' but nice choices either way.

Our Centaur force has grown stronger! :reptar:

Yeeaah that's kinda my bad on the peanut. I was drawing the peanut shape and realized it looked like a potato so I took from the Planter's Peanut man instead. I have no idea if it's a thing outside of the US or not.

I WOULD LIKE TO JOIN.

My centaur name being "My lovely (Man)horse"

or

"I heard you're a horse now, father"

Neeeighhh!!!
Welcome to Centaur Club!
I hope you’re ready for a shower because we’ve sugar lumps aplenty here!

Now that you are with the horde, we are one and one are we. If any of us should shout:
“Down with this sort of thing!”

Someone else in our club will promptly respond with:
“Careful neigh!”

I cannot come up with a clever name. 50 cent(aur)s?

That's pretty cool!
I've put that as your name but all of these names can be changed if we think of anything else.

I'd love to see a 50 Centaur Album Cover 😆

Centaur thoughts of the day:
Why didn't the Centaurs kidnap horses? Maybe it would have been easier? :hmm:

Can Centaurs ride horses?

If so, can they also ride Sidesaddle?

Does a Centaur play a game of Horseshoes with his own shoes?

Does the clean glass go into the cabinet facing down or up?

Other Centaur stuff: I had a rough night sleeping last night and was probably running a low-grade fever. Nothing serious, but I think it invoked a rather strange dream :wacky: All I can remember was a toy riding lawnmower mowing up heavy clumps of leaves and that I had to hurry because of the Centaur War. I'm not sure what the Centaur war was though, as I woke up and had to get some water. I hope it's not a premonition.
