2012 is right and it actually happened but people were too dumb to read the calendar right. 2012 really happened almost 12 years earlier; January 20th, 2001, when George Dubya Bush was elected.

However, it isn't instant; it's a process that will take hundreds of years.

We're predicted to collide with Andromeda in 4 Billion years and all be dead within 1.4 Billion approx due to the suns increasing luminosity. You have a nice day now :D
