The Royal Mail has stopped deliveries to a street in Northampton after claiming that a Yorkshire terrier attacked a postman.

Residents were sent a letter informing them that no post would be delivered after December 7 because of the actions of the 15cm dog named Peggy, who has been dubbed 'The Beast of Dorset Gardens', AFP reports.

"Because of the dog's behaviour, [the postman] believes your mail cannot be delivered safely and in the circumstances I have instructed him not to deliver mail to your address," the letter read.

However, owner Kathleen Joyce, 49, told the Northampton Chronicle: "Peggy has barked at the postman but she wouldn't hurt anyone. She is only little.

"She has been in this family for ten years and there is no way we are going to get rid of her."

However, an unnamed neighbour who has been forced to make a 22km journey to pick up his mail claimed: "It is a vicious little thing and I have seen it going for the postman."

The local council has warned that Joyce and her family may lose their rented home if they refuse to rehome Peggy.

Blimey, I've heard about dog attacks, but attacking a postman is beyond weird. And now they refuse to deliver stuff on the street? :lew:

dogs attacking postmen is a classic you plonker :lew:

If i was that post man and it attacked me id put the boot in the little bastard. Dunno why they would refuse to deliver on that street, thats taking it a bit far, i certainly wouldnt deliver to the address in question.

Dogs attacking postmen is nothing new, my Grandma had a massive Alsation, when my dad was a kid, that once nearly ripped a postman's leg off, she had to pay to repair his uniform :lew:

See, if it was a big dog, I'd understand why they'd refuse to go there... but a Yorkie? They're just yappy little buggers. :lew:

Little dogs can be nasty little bastards, I was caught on the recieving end of a chowowa once :gasp:

Maybe I'm just not familiar with the mail delivery system in that area, but isn't there some way for them to keep the dog inside the house when the postman comes? I don't get why the postman would need to come in contact with the dog. I mean if they're in danger of losing their house over this, can't they just keep the dog cordoned off somewhere at the time of day when the mail comes?

Ok, Yorkshire terriers are among the smallest of dogs. And being a terrier, they are going to have the terrier personality where they will challenge anyone and will bard frequently. There is really no need for the postman to be afraid.

But, leaving a yorkshire terrier outside by itself is very irresponsible. Small dogs need to be supervised when outside. A big dog could come by and take their challenge which will end badly for the dog... or a hawk can come flying by and see the dog as lunch.

Little dogs can be nasty but their bites do not hurt. Anyway, if it bit me i'd give it a smack and it would run for the hills. I am sure the post man is just being over dramatic.

Anyway, I don't like people who keep their dogs in the front yard, why can't they put the dog in the back? or build a gate if it can get from the back to the front? its not hard.

My friend at work has a Yorkie. She's 3 years old now and she still unloads her #1's and #2's on her floors daily. She says she had to rip out all the carpeting in her house and put in laminate hardwood floors to be able to have a way to keep the pee from saturating and ruining her flooring again...after the dog's bout of RAGING diarrhea. Her dog is a barker and when I came over there she jumped and jumped and jumped...and barked and barked. Its really obvious that my friend lets her rule the place.

The thing is that with some small dogs (Yorkies especially, I've read) ...if you don't train them properly they think they rule the place. My friend obviously never trained hers right, otherwise she wouldn't do all of the naughty things that she does. For some people thats fine, but not for me. I wouldn't want to deal with a mini dog who has this ridiculous superiority complex...which is obviously what the dog in this story has.

I can't blame the postman, you shouldn't have to deal with this over and over on the job. Something obviously needs to be done.

My Grandad had a Yorkie, and it was literally the yappiest dog I've ever met. It used to do it's business in the house, and he just couldn't control it at all. There are no redeeming qualities about that dog that I can recall, at all :lew:

On the other hand, my mum knows someone who has a Yorkie, and she worships her dog; but she also knows how to train it, and it is the sweetest, most well-behaved little dog ever, so really, it depends on how you raise them. Although, that's true of most/all dogs really :lew:

This.

If the dog is harassing the postman, they should keep it inside when he comes by. The dog shouldn't be loose to roam the streets anyway, imo. I don't blame the postman either. You shouldn't have to deal with animals trying to bite you when you're trying to deliver someone's mail. I don't care how small the dog is.

It annoys me when people have those little mutts that always bark and act like they're going to bite you and then they just laugh and say "Oh, Toto wouldn't hurt a fly!" I want to smack them. Keep your damn dog on a leash, I say. If a small dog comes within biting range of me, it's getting kicked. Bottom line.

Yep small dog syndrom. And so many people let their little dogs develop it. That is the reason so many of them are yappy because their owners have let them think that they own the place.

Think of this. When a dog jumps on someone, it is showing dominate behavior. The dominate dog rules the pack. Would you let your German Shepherd jump up on someone one or would you like it if one jumped up no you? Most likely not. So why let a yorkie or a chiuaua do it? If a German shepherd was sitting in your lap and growled at anyone who came near you would you saw "awe, he just loves me so much!" hopefully not. But small dogs get away with it all the time.

Too many people treat their dogs like humans and forget that they are animals. Often what means one thing in the human world means something totally different world. Take for example, you yell at your dog for being bad and he slumps his head and walks into the other room. Most people make the mistake of assuming that the dog is sad and run up to comfort it. What is really happening is that the dog is being submissive towards you which is GOOD. When people run up to comfort their dog, this actually defeats the purpose and the dog interprets it as weakness.

Now we have so many small dogs that think they are head of the pack. Unfortunantly so many people laugh at this as the dog thinking he is tough which has lead to so many small dogs having behavior problems. Some people even laugh when a small dog nips at them.

Worst is when people push their small dogs around in carts instead of letting them walk. Among the most annoying are people who carry their dog around in their purse as an accessory.

I don't understand why the dog has to be in the front yard.

Where I live people always keep dogs fenced off in the backyard.

And even so wouldn't the letterbox be on the outside of the fence so he wouldn't have to go in or is there no fence?

Though isn't it coincidental that all of a sudden the postie won't deliver to the house after the owner has said they've had the dog for ten years?

Maybe it's a new postie and he's a pansy who can't handle a small yapping dog?

Or maybe it is a vicious little shit and the old postie never cared and scared the dog off with his manlyness that the newer postie may lack?

I dunno, I'm making shit up now, but I still think it's dumb that they won't deliver to the rest of the street.

Why the whole street? Can't you just skip that house and go to the next one without having to go anywhere near the dog?
