My mate just played this for the first time, I went over to help him, he sold all his summon materia as soon as he got it =/
 
Not the smartest thing in FFVII at all but if he trains properly then he probably wouldn't need them. As long as he doesn't sell Knights of the Round because that can come in handy.
 
He's level 42 at north crater, seems like he needs a lot more training =/
I was level 35 there,got my ass kicked,dind't come back till level 70
 
seems weird that he's got so far in the game without using summons.. But still, just make sure his magic etc is good and he'll need an almight defence for when he fights Sephiroth in the end.

I'm in the mood to play some FF now..
 
Last time I played through FFVII the only summon I used was Knights of the Round. I basically stayed ahead of the game.
 
Most elemental summons are useless anyway, so I'm not that surprised he did it. The thing I am surprised about is that the materia has little retail value (IIRC), and probably wouldn't give him any pocket change whatsoever.
 
Meh. only the latter summon materia becomes useful at the end of the game, but none of its really neccessary to defeat sephiroth - i just used magic materia and the enemy skill materia.

so he's not that much of an idiot - maybe he just didnt want to cycle through loads of materia he was never going to use.
 
dude fight and level up and u wont need any summons not even KOTR
i was level 99 at that point and i beat the game easily i was toying with sephiroth
 
I never got KOTR. I tried damn hard to get a Gold Choboco to get it, but never could. :( I wish i did, i don't feel like i've completed the game fully.

I don´t think you need Summon Materia to finish the game although it comes in handy for sure!

I think that the first summons you obtain aren´t really that great anyway...
 
Ah, but if you guys really wanna defeat the Weapons, then summon is really important. Especially Phoenix, KOTR, and Bahamut Zero. I found summon to be extremely useful when I played years ago. I'm playing it again at the moment and my goal is to get every single summon and mastering all of them, including the "Master All" summon.
 
u dont need summons at all really. Ive got through the game without summoning once. Although summons only give u 1 gil even if mastered so its a waste of time selling them anyway

Not really "an idiot" for doing so. It is possible to play the game without summon materia. I never used it when I played. I just leveled up my characters a lot. He should be fine without summons.
 
Well, you could get through the game with out using materia, but I wouldn't have sold any cure materia. It really helps out if your in a difficult battle since potions don't give you that much health.

Summons suck. You can live without them. By the time they're summoned and the summoning is over, you could probably do 3x that much damage. The only super awesome summons to keep are Bahamut ZERO, Odin, and KOTR. All the others don't matter. But it is pretty stupid to sell them. Even if they're mastered, you can only sell them for 1 gil.
