Okay, before I begin this monologue, a little back-story: I have never ever played a Final Fantasy game. The only gaming console I have (as of now!) is a PS3. My current favorite games are Dark Souls II, The Last of Us, and Skyrim. But now I'm looking for a change of scenery and have heard great things about Final Fantasy for years. (By the way, I play piano and I'm in the process of learning a ton of Final Fantasy pieces!) Okay, from what I've heard, it's not necessary to start with Final Fantasy I, and I got around to thinking, why not buy ALL of them and start from I and go on up? This would mean buying a few more consoles as well as the games!

So the whole point of this thread is to add up the total costs. Also, feel free to argue about why I shouldn't buy all of them when I haven't played any of them before! It sounds weird I know, but go ahead and give me your arguments!

Here goes the prices of the games and consoles:

GAMES NEEDED (Amazon used) :
Final Fantasy: $3.24
Final Fantasy II: $5.24
Final Fantasy III: $25.69
Final Fantasy IV: $7.80
Final Fantasy V / Final Fantasy VI: #9 .01
Final Fantasy VII: $17.17
Final Fantasy VIII: $9.00
Final Fantasy IX: $7.11
Final Fantasy X-X2: $23.99
Final Fantasy XI: How about we skip the online one? Thoughts?
Final Fantasy XII: $3.19
Final Fantasy XIII: $3.82
Final Fantasy XIII-2: $9.00
Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns: $26.30
Final Fantasy XIV: Another online one. Thoughts?
Total (without online games) : $150.56

CONSOLES NEEDED (Amazon used) :
FF I - FF IV: PSP - $64.99
FF V - FF IX: PS - $16.99
FF X-X2: Already have a PS3! - $0
FF XII: PS2 - $42.50
FF XIII: Already have a PS3! - $0
Total: $124.48

Total for consoles and games: $275.04

Okay, now you're wondering what the point of this thread is. I just wanted to put in perspective how much it would cost to have the entire collection (minus the online games, haha!). Please comment below why I should or shouldn't buy the online ones as well.

The main reason for this thread is to ask if a total noob to Final Fantasy should buy all of them without having played any of them before.

All or nothing, am I right? :D

Thanks guys,

Final Fantasy: Its a good game and a pretty easy one to start with though missing it isnt going to hurt anyone, the storyline was almost non-existant as this game was basically the ''throw what we have left at a game and if it sells thats cool, if ont... we are going bankrupt anyway'' last ditch game, hence the title of the series

Final Fantasy II: again really simple you could skip this one too, nothing over the top when it comes to storyline that you need to follow, but still a fun game to play
Final Fantasy VII: Easily one of the more complicated stories in the franchise (not to mention the fact you will need to buy Crisis core on the psp and dirge of cerberus on the ps2 to get evrything understood) but because this is mqwy favourite im not going to tell you not to get it
Final Fantasy VIII: Great soundtrack ok storyline and amazing graphics for the time this title is a must
Final Fantasy IX: this sent the game back into the more cutesy graphics but still an amazing game to have and play.
Final Fantasy X-X2: x was mediocre and x-2 was literally a pretty princess dress up game with a bit of rpg thrown in, these two games SHOULD be missed
Final Fantasy XIII: Terrible story, terrible characters, terrible gameplay but a good OST that makes up for NONE of the above DONT BUY
Final Fantasy XIII-2: welcome to XIII disc four because we missed it off the last one by complete accident, new gameplay... still sucks, and so does the rest of it DONT BUY

You will notice gaps in the numbers... thats because i only offer opinions on the ones i have played entirely and completed

one overlooked from your list is final fantasy tactics/war of the lions ((GET IT))

Thanks for your great response! The reason I thought about getting ALL of them is just that it'd be cool to have them all, sounds dumb, but hey, I thought a huge collection of all of them would be cool! What do you think?

whats the point in getting a game if you dont enjoy it? its why i traded in mmy XIII and XIII-2

I recommend FF7, FF10, FF3, FF4, and FF6, FF9. Those to me, are a must.

The others that i believe are great but subjective to tastes are FF5, FF8, FF12. I still recommend these if you have an open mind.

The ones i DO NOT recommend are FF13, or its sequels. i also dont recommend many spin offs. FF2 is also skip able,

FF1 is completely skippable aswell, but....at the same time, its one of those games you just got to play to know the origins of the series. its good, if you dont overestimate it, it'll be quite surprising.

The only good ones are 6-9. 10 was decent enough so it's probably worth a go as well, but it was very different and at times could be a bit of a chore

Depending on your region you should be able to but FF I-IX on the ps store minus III, thus eliminating most of your cost as they are all around $5-$10 dollars I believe. I and II would be origins, IV comes with chrono cross, or need to buy separately is Chronicles, then V and VI is your Anthology. So wouldn't need to buy all those systems except a DS/3DS for FF III.

As for your online ones XI and XIV unless you like playing with a group of people then yeah skip them, but if you do go with one I would suggest XIV as there are a decent number of us that play on the Lamia server. My thoughts are as one states above VI-IX are the ones should focus more on getting, though I did largely enjoy some parts of II and enjoyed IV and X as well.

What about Final Fantasy IV? I thought for sure that was one of the Final Fantasy games that people like a lot. X is a good starting place as well.

To the original poster: I don't recommend you play II, III, and V. Those are the games with less suspense and can generally be boring.

I suggest you try the DS version. It makes the game feel very different. It also has voice acting!

I don't know how you feel about playing on your phone, but you can play maybe the first 6 games on a smartphone at least on Android for sure. I don't know how well they work on a phone, but they're there

I don't want to offend the thread starter, but not every Final Fantasy game is likely to be your thing. For instance, the first three games are very frustrating to play through, as well as lacking in character development.

Personally, I would recommend starting off with Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI, and Final Fantasy VII. These games, I think, have done so much more for the franchise than any other.

I know that the first Final Fantasy is also worthy of mention, but don't jump into that game with high expectations, as it's really primitive.

It is really great to see this sort of action you are going to take to play all the Final Fantasy games, Personally your enjoyment and experience will be based off of your own time with the games. I would say not listen to anyone on here, people are biased to their fav titles it is only natural (I could shower you with spam saying to play 9 because its the best but it is down to your own judgement) I am also one of the few that outright defends FFXIII and it's sequels full well knowing they are a shadow of the former glory of Final Fantasy.

My point is follow and do what YOU want and don't listen to the people on here swaying you in a certain direction.

I would highly recommend Final Fantasy X, if you want to play a game with a perfect story (in my eyes), beautiful and engaging music and many memorable characters :D The same goes for Final Fantasy X/2, though for me it's kind of girly. But I don't care if it's girly or boyrly, cuz' I'mma like the game :D They are my childhood and my manhood.
:smiff:

FF VI, FFVII and FFIX is a must!!!Since you like Piano too VI and VII has one of the best OST's in the whole entire series.

Shaddap pooley, IV was amazing!

I can't keep up with all the games any more tbh, I'm not sure what there is to even buy any more. I have summat called chocobo dungeon (or summat) for the DS, it came free with it, but ive never actuallyu played it, maybe i should try it out

I also bought a psp specifially for WoTL.. I actually bought the game first, got the psp, realised I hated it hahahaha

Oh, poo, did you ever play the DS version of IV? You might like it more if you give that a go?

FFIV itself is fine. Just don't bother with its sequel, which is pointless, and largely a retread with a few newer faces.

If you're looking to cut some costs, the first three games aren't essential experiences, as they're rather antiquated in their designs (sans FF2's strange levelling system, which I suppose you can try out just to test how far your patience can go), and the most likely candidates to offer the least amount of enjoyment. FF3 is definitely NOT worth that asking price listed in the OP.

FFVII shouldn't cost that much. It's on PSN for less, as well as Steam if you don't mind a PC version with DRM.

If you're thinking about the online games, you may as well skip FFXI and pick up a cheap copy of FFXIV, which offers a free month's worth of subscription. I'm sure FFXI is a fine MMO and one that still has quite the loyal fanbase, but it's older, less intuitive and less solo player-friendly than FFXIV. Plus the latter's still a rather recent MMO, and its community is distinctively sizeable, so putting a party together/finding a player willing to craft shouldn't be as much of an issue.

my patience runs out within half an hour of playing FFII I just can't bring myself to play that game. Everytime I think I will tackle it, I end up rage quitting
