Multiple Platforms The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim

Hax. :mokken:

I will not be denied my rapid transit without any interminably long loading times! One thing about being a werewolf -- you can seriously book when you want to.

Run really fast...? I was able to run insanely fast in Oblivion anyways, it was awesome. But all the same, I would rather be doing that as a werewolf in Skyrim. Yeah... :hmmm:

I need to complete Oblivion!! Had the Game of the Year edition for ages, but not gotten round to finishing it. I dont know much about the Elder Scrolls universe or series, but Skyrim will be purchased lol.

Yeah, I don't know much about The Elder Scrolls series as a whole, the only game I have played so far is Oblivion.

But yeah, seeing as this is like a sequel to that one specifically, I definitely have to get this. Before Oblivion, I really couldn't play any of the games, because they were PC only, and I don't do that with this weak computer, I just use it mainly for this; chatting.

I don't know. I was probably the only person alive to be but I was really disappointed with Oblivion. It looked nice but it had none of the magic of Morrowind or of Daggerfall. A lot customization was taken away, there weren't as many quests, and the expansions pack didn't expand all that much.

Still, I'll be tempted when it does come out. If I have a next gen console or a new computer by then. :D

:surprised:

When I started playing Oblivion, I was kinda like, "eh, this is interesting, nice collision for a change!"

When I got outside, it was a starry night.

HOLY.

SHIT.

For the first time I could ever remember, I was really immersed in a game. I actually got the sense of being inside the game world. It's really hard to described. It really came home when I was running up some hill and the grass was waving in the wind and the moons crept across the sky, and I saw the light from a Black Horse Courier's torch in the air before I got over the hill (kinda like oncoming headlights at night). It was eerily real. So, I really liked Oblivion. ^_^

But yeah, Ke$ha, I know what you mean -- there were a lot less quests and stuff, but Morrowind was such a beast with the quests -- 550 of them, more than any two games put together! COME ON, that's way too much -- it starts to feel a lot like busy work, especially when half the time, you're spinning around the map with no sense of direction because of the crappy map and no compass and trying to dodge the cliffracers on top of all that! I will never forgive Morrowind for not having fast travel. :mokken: That was one game where being a werewolf or vampire were damn near necessary.

I'm really excited about Skyrim too! They're teasing us with that little trailer!!

I really enjoyed Morrowind and Oblivion, but I'm afraid I've not played any of the other Elder Scrolls games! I was always so happy as a little Wood Elf... I know that they come across as a little slow and silly but that seems to suit me just fine! I had great fun in Oblivion as an agent! My skills with a bow were really quite impressive!

Don't worry, squaredgirl. I've only played Morrowing and Oblivion myself. Well, technically I also played Arena (the very first of the series) but that was a long time ago, and I never got really far. :\ The computer I was using was SO OLD that even the 8-bit graphics were enough to make it crash.

Frequently.

Just read a couple of the books about the history of the empire in the game, and that'll get you all caught up as to what's going on. That's what I did. ^_^

Daggerfall is complete and utter chaos. So it doesn't surprise me that not alot of people have played it. But if they could do what they did with Daggerfall now with modern graphics and the abilities of a modern system than the next Elder Scrolls would kick ass, because nothing would be quite the same between two games.

Although the random thing did get annoying, and it's way too buggy. So I would say it's Morrowind, Oblivion, then Daggerfall, then Arena (I played it a bit but meh). If you haven't played the first two they are worth a shot, but they aren't too great either.

Well, I was looking forward to it, but as more and more information came out, I'm no longer excited about it. More than likely, I'll still play it, but it's going to be nowhere near as good as Daggerfall and Morrowind. They're taking that franchise in the wrong direction. :hmph:

It's been confirmed that there are now less attributes than every other Elder Scrolls game that came before it. Spell customization is out. They are still going to have that awful level scaling system. The weapons that were taken out in Oblivion, will remain taken out, and they will not be added back in. Not in Skyrim, nor any other ES series game.

I'll still play it, but I'm not expecting much. I'm just going to reinstall Morrowind and Graphics Mod the shit out of it now.

Whoa, you know all of that for fact? I know I haven't been keeping up with it as well lately, but where did you find out that information, what's the source? :hmmm:

If there is no spell customization, I would find that very disappointing...

I heard that there would be a less skills in the game about 18 skills so it's even less than what Oblivion had but I didn't know that there was going to be no spell customization and that was one thing that I really liked. They seem to be adding a lot of good things to the game but they are getting rid of a lot of great things that the other games had but I hope that it's still going to a great game to play

I'm pretty excited about the game, I enjoyed Oblivion and so I have high hopes regarding Skyrim. So long as it remains immersive and rewards random exploration/questing I'll love it.

They'd have to mess up the game pretty bad for me to not really enjoy it, this is one of my most wanted games, looking forward to getting this for Christmas.

Too bad that day is so far off though. :P

In one of the screenshots, the girl actually looks attractive!!!! I can't wait for this game, I spent months, maybe a year playing Oblivion, it was just so addicting.

For those that are still interested.

Like I said, I'll probably still play the game. However, I already know that at this point, Morrowind will remain the better game.

All of this information is now old.
On leveling:
Totally revamped, no more class selection at the start of the game, every skill you level contributes to your overall level. And each time you level you get extra health plus the ability to get either more health, magicka or stamina.
Each level also brings you perks. Cool abilities I guess like in Fallout 3.
Also, the leveling was moved from 1-25 or something like that to 1-50, but 50 is soft-capped, you just advance really slow after that.

On skills:
Mysticism is gone.
18 skills, down from 21 on Oblivion, and 27 on Morrowind.
Tries to accomodate players who want to specialize in a certain proffesion (like mage or thief), while at the same time giving room for players who like to do plenty of everything. They want to keep a special care so that this feels good, not prone to cheating and organic.

On the story and lore:
200 years after Oblivion. Set in Skyrim, a region north of the imperial city, where the Nords live.
The dragons are returning, as it was prophetized. You are gonna be trying to stop the wicked dragon god. You are a dragonborn, a dragon hunter. Your mentor is one of the last blade, voiced by some old dude from Shutter Island and Minority Report.
Also, there is a civil war, since the king is dead.
Enemies include were-yeti's, giant spider, dragons and other cool creatures.

On combat:
They want to make it more dynamic and tactical. You have to assign each hand with a function I think, either magic, 2 weapons, a weapon and a shield, etc.
You can also waste stamina by sprinting, allowing you to get access to tactical postitions.
Emphasis on really improving the combat this time around.
They are also putting care on how each weapon feel on your hand.

Other:
Third person view has been improved
5 massive cities, more variation in caves and underground stuff.

On quests:
Quests are much more dynamic now.
The quests are now more determined by how you build your chracter, individual actions and overall much more dynamic. Examples provided: If you are more of a magic user, some other mage may approach you who may not have had if you were just a melee character. Or if you killed some dude who owned a store that was gonna give you a quest, his sister would inherit the store, but she may resent you before giving you the quest. Also, if you drop a weapon in the street instead of selling it, it may just dissapear, some kid may get it and give it back to you, which would lead to a series of stuff, or some dudes may fight over who gets it.
Also, it said that the quests you are given would be modified by how you have played (I guess like scaling the quests). For example, the location of a rescue mission would be determined by which location you have visited (it will try to give you a dungeon you haven't been in) and I guess also giving you appropiate enemies to your level.

I can add that there is an option for no HUD.

On Conversations: (thanks MrBig)
Conversations aren't done in a zoomed in static shot anymore.
Start a conversation with some and they will act like someone would in real life, looking at you occasionally and walking around a bit and also continue doing a task if they were doing one while talking.

On Weapon smithing:
Go to a forge and carve a new weapon out of red hot metal.

Recap from raphier

Dual-wielding: you have two hands now in combat and you can wield anything to both hands. You may assign a dagger on left hand and use a mace with right hand. The choice as they say is yours.

Duel: You may duel any NPC on the streets western style.

Inheritence: When you kill a shopkeeper, his/her family member will inherit the shop and will be angry about you, but stil give you missions.

Level-scaling: It is coming back

18 skills: supposedly even less skills to play with?

No mysticism

Perks: Rumored to be in Skyrim. I may have understood it wrong.

Boosts: Pick stamina, health, magic boosts on level up.

Enchanting: This skill makes a return.

"Radiant storytelling" or Level Scaling 2.0: "The game eventually logs a huge storehouse of knowledge about how you've played, and subsequently tailors content to your capabilities and experiences. Entering a city, a young woman might approach you and beg you to save her daughter from kidnappers. The game will look at the nearby dungeons you've explored, automatically set the mission in a place you've never visited, and designate opponents that are appropriately matched to your strengths and weaknesses."

Fast-Travel: As you probably expect, you can instantly travel to previous locations with a tap of the button

Sprinting: You can now sprint about!

Town visiting: You may do more in towns, like tailor weapons, cooking, farming or mining. Not much details about this or how detailed they are as jobs.

On level scaling from the Senior Community Manager:

Scaling is similar to what we had in Fallout 3. See the comment I put in our official forums

Since people are asking, wanted to briefly touch on level scaling. All our games have had some amount of randomness/levelling based on player level. Skyrim's is similar to Fallout 3's, not Oblivion's.

I'm excited to play. Oblivion is in my top 5 games of all time and Skyrim just looks like it's going to improve the formula. I honestly can't wait.

My thoughts in parenthesis.

>crossbows, spears, throwing weapons, and spellmaking non-existent in Skyrim (Very, very, very, disappoint)

>LEVEL SCALING remains (Was very disappoint)

>randomly generated (confirmed), level-scaled (confirmed), linear quests with no decisions to affect the world or story (Up for debate)

>attributes removed. todd said "they're just numbers that increase" (This is fact it's been confirmed)

>UI will have no mouse support due to Apple inspiration (up for major debate)

>regenerating health, instant-heal potions, and instant-heal waiting remain (somewhat disappoint)

>fast travel and quest compass. this means the Skyrim was made with fast travel in mind. Copypasta landscape returns (also up for major debate, if true, I am majorly disappoint)

>no Vampirism (DISAPPOINT), no ability to mount (need clarification, most likely means no horse riding), no werewolf transformation (didn't care anyway), no diseases (DISAPPOINT), and no in-depth companions (all said in podcast)

>opponents still 'slide' back when hit, skyrim uses sounds from oblivion, can't climb ladders, game looks the same, etc (Up for debate, and still plenty of time for Bethesda to change before release date, someone jumped the gun on this one)

Do remember; all of these things, even though confirmed, are still subject to change. (I wouldn't put money on it changing though. Bethesda has always been very adamant when their minds are made up.)

Hrm. The more I hear about this game, the more my excitement slips away. To me, I don't care if half the skills are incredibly situational - I love having the choice to build an immersive character within an immersive world.

Furthermore, are we limited to only playing as a Nord in this game or can we choose from the other races that were present in Oblivion?
