Do you take stock in superstitions?

I personally take all superstitions lightly, but some of them are rather interesting. Like when you step on crack, break your mother's back one.
And the black cat, yesss... even though I do believe that black cats give me more luck than it takes away. :P

List some that you found rather interesting or ones that you believe in too.
 
I love black cats, though. They're so pretty. ^_^

...I've come to the conclusion that if I'm in a relationship with someone, I shouldn't draw myself with them. A few months after the drawing's completed, they've broken up with me.

I know, sounds kinda dumb, but when this happens with me with all four boyfriends I'm with, it really makes me wonder...

I thought you said it happens with all four of your boyfriends. XD

Hmm like I said before, my bf has all kinds of weird superstitions.
Like the other day, I wanted to give his mom's pet rabbit a bath and he said "NO! When you give rabits baths, they die instantly!"

So I just kind of...blinked twice and walked away. :confused:
 
I like Friday the 13th.
It backfires for the supernaturals who cause it.

I somehow manage to get:

1.) all A's on any quizzes
2.) Bad stuff happening to other people, but not me.
3.) Dreams in sleep
4.) People being nice..
5.) Good shows on TV --- well, at least for me anyway.
 
Eh, it depends on what superstition is mentioned. :\

I do think that if you walk under a ladder you do get bad luck. ^___^
 
I've done that countless times. *laughs at superstition*

I think I have an immunity to bad luck.
Because it's either my fault or someone else's fault, not nature in any way.

Now, my grandparents on the other hand....they believe that spaghetti increases your lifespan.
 
Hahaha. Classic stuff. I belive in some, not all. It's quite funny actually how some people freak when they do something wrong such as break a mirror.
 
Actually, if you ask me, most of the 'classic' superstitions could be excuses to make little kids do things that should be common sense.

Like the whole "don't open an umbrella indoors" thing. You could knock over so many expensive things with an open umbrella (since you can't see them) and you can't exactly move from room to room with an open umbrella.

And "if you spill salt, throw it over your right shoulder". I'll just assume that you shouldn't eat anything spilled and it's easier to clean grains of something with a broom or vacuum than to just scoop it into your hands and toss it.

Though the whole "black cats" thing is just speciest. I mean, what's so bad about cats, especially black ones?
 
I think it stems mostly from:

1.) Historically, the middle ages and farther
and
2.) The desires of humans to explain things that they cannot explain rationally.

Black is associated with everything death and evil. White is the opposite, that kind of thing. Personally, I don't really care what color the cat is.
 
Not a Superstition person at all. If anything happens, it's just shere coincidence or all out of random occurance. There is nothing I can say or ritualistically do differently to affect the future of something that's bound to happen anyway in most circumstances.
 
Oh gee, I grew up in a family where superstitions are a big thing. It's quite annoying, but I do admit that some are also very interesting.

An example:

Do not sweep your kitchen floor during the night and toss the dirt outside. Instead, leave the dirt you collected behind the door or in a dust pan and wait until morning until you throw them out. Reason: it's as if you're sweeping your good luck and fortune right out the door.

A favorite of mine are fish tanks. :wacky: Apparently it's bad luck to own a fish tank. About 6 months ago, my dad bought a huge fish tank. Cost them like 600 bucks. Then my grandma found out and she freaked out. "They're bad luck! Throw them away!" My dad ignored her at first but then two weeks later, he got into an accident, lost his job as a truck driver, and almost lost the house. My dad then blamed the fish tank! xDD He told my stepmom to either put it outside our house, or get rid of it. Naturally, my stepmom was frustrated because she doesn't believe in superstitions and was about to cry. Can't really blame her.

In the end, after much fighting between the two and when my dad got a new job, they kept the fish tank.

There's a few more, but can't remember them now.
 
I've never been one to be supersticious about anything.

I remember one day I bought a watch for my mother for Christmas and a lady at work told me that you should never buy a watch for your mother. It's bad luck.

I kinda raised my eyebrow went 'okay'.

Thought to myself: You believe what you wanna believe but I'm giving my mother the watch. >_<

Bad things happen all the time. People who believe in superstitions are naturally going to blame a superstition for something bad happening, soon after it occurs.

However, it's really got nothing to do with silly beliefs in my opinion. Bad things just happen. No matter if I got my mother the watch or not, something bad was still going to happen. For example:

I gave my mother the watch.

Just this Valentines day my dad got her a new dog. However the other dog she owned wanted to kill it etc. We had to give it away. My mother was depressed for ages.

Why would I blame it on the watch? I can't be responsible for my fathers actions. I did not bring them bad luck. I am not responsible for the fact that her other dog was already psycho who couldn't tolerate another dog in the house.

Mitsuki: I understand your family might have been a little more freaked out considering your dad went and bought the fish tank and then lost his job a couple of weeks later.

If that happened to me I probably would have thought about the possibility of it being caused by owning a fish tank. I would've thought it was weird and coincidental. However in the end it all comes down to the fact that we can't blame things like that on beliefs such as that.

It's like turning a blind eye from the matter and saying, "It's because you bought a fish tank."

Instead of finding the real problem which caused the accident and everything else that followed. Like he may of been tired and not concentrating properly. I don't know. But concentrating on superstitions doesn't help people solve the real problem when they occur.

I understand that there are people who have been brought up on believing in superstitions and it's kind of like a religion. Something you believe in.

I know my mother and her mother have a few superstitions such as: they always put a gold coin in a new bag or wallet that is given as a gift. Otherwise it's bad luck. But yeah I'm too stingy to do that. :wacky:

Im not really superstiious although I will talk to a single magpie and tend to avoid walking under ladders, i think i just do that one because its more common sense than being superstitious though....and ive never got out of the habit of not walking over 3 grids, i dont even remember what that was all about.

People that have a fit and squeal over things annoy me. ZOMG YOU CROSSED YOUR KNIFE AND FORK, or YOU BROKE A MIRROR :gasp::gasp: that go reallllly over the top peck my head
 
I'm not superstitious, I'm one of those people who believe there is always a reason behind something happening rather than, "omgz you smashed a mirror - 7 years bad look for you", and as of yet, anything I've done which has been classed as 'superstitious' hasn't brought me bad look at all so that's a main reason why I'm not =]
 
I used to call superstitions "stupid-stitions" back when I thought that was clever somehow. >.> I honestly don't have any. I figure whatever is gonna happen is gonna happen and there's nothing I can do to affect it.

The only time I really get a little superstitious is during Steelers games. I always wear their gear and make sure I have a terrible towel somewhere nearby. If I don't, I'm worried I'm letting down the team. It's pretty fucking retarded... but I'm not changing it. >.>
 
OmG! stupid cat!

A black cat just crossed the street a few feet in front of my car on my way home from the gym. I a bit superstitious but i dont want to be! i just cant help it. I feel like ima have bad luck now! some one convince me superstition isnt real!

do u believe this stuff?
 
I really don't believe in the black cat superstition. If that were the case we'd have bad luck constantly. :lol: There's a black cat that hangs out in this neighborhood. Anyway, there are SOME superstitions I believe in, but something is meager as a black cat or breaking a mirror? Naaaaah.
 
Yes I do as well not so much the black cat one

the magpie one i do everytime i see 1 magpie i look everywhere to find a second one
