Summons rock the beast world, just to let you know. After beating FFXII 2 years ago, it's made me think back and realize that this is one of the best ways to obtain the Summons over the gaming series, but I wanted to know which FF game had the best method of obtaining Summons in your opinion.

There's been a mix of games where you have to either find the certain magicite(FFVI) or materia(FFVII), or summon in a certain location. Other times you have to fight them(FFXII) all or draw them from enemies(FFVIII). Even the method of obtaining them through the Cloister of Trials in FFX was a pretty neat method, but not to challenging in my opinion.

I'd have to go with the current set up in FFXII being my favorite method so far. You have to yourself prove worthy of being able to control one of these beasts, and go through what it feels like to face them before you unleash them on your foes later in the game. I tell ya, it's definitely a big challenge walking into the waterway to face Cuchilain (sp?) and instantly have your HP sapped the hell out of you constantly... :/ Not to mention he has a crap-load of HP.

So what's your favorite way of obtaining Summons/Espers/GF's/Eidolons/Aeons in the Final Fantasy series?

Hmmm i love the idea that theyre beasts that only certain people with gifts can aquire and use. ie FFVI FFIX.
But my favourite was in FFVII, its not like its anything spectacular really but i remember i always got excited when i saw that wee glowing red stone. I was like 'ooh wonder who il get now?'
The aeons i found a bit weird, it was the fact that there was only one of each. You pray for ages to get an aeon but if a summoner ever challenges you he can fight you with your own aeon. Whats meant to happen if your stuck fighting that bastard malboro and you cant summon an aeon because theyre all being used by other summoners.

hmm well final fantasy VI gave you way too many at a time for me to like. I didn't like the trials in FF10. My favorite would have to me... Final fantasy V or Tactics. You have to learn them with AP. It was cool cause you could get the stronger ones first if you saved AP and you didn't have to do much to learn the summon job. so yeah thats my answer.

I liked the FFIV way the best, you have to defeat them in battle in order to obtain them for your summoner. The battles were always significantly more difficult than the ordinary boss battle, giving you a sense of accomplishment when you obtain them.

I'd have to say VII. It's the only one where you have to actualy work to cast a particular summon more then once a battle. think th max capped out at five unless you used the master summon materia.

I would definitely say either Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy XII. FFT was cool because only the one class could learn them and you need to get AP from the Summoning class to be able to get one of the Summons. For each summon that was better, the more AP it would cost. FFXII was good, like Busta said, because you had to fight for your right to obtain them. It was a unique way of getting them considering in most you had to either find them or get enough points for them. I can say materia hunting is fun and i also like it that you have to draw it from the monster from FF8, but FFT and FFXII are my favourite ways to obtain them.

I liked having to beat them in battle before I could use them. IMO It made sense that a being as powerful as a summon would only obey someone who proved themselves worthy in battle.

I thought it was a little strange in FFVII how the summons would obey anyone who summoned them like they were a slave. However, in FFIV the summons agreed to serve your party once you proved that you could defeat them, I find that more believable than just having a summon serve you because you summoned them.

XII was like that too, although there was no set summoner class.

I'm stuck between the methods of VIII and XII.

VIII, for some you had to battle, like Odin, Bahamut, Ifrit, others you had to obtain through drawing like Eden, Alexander, Siren, and others you got through doing a quest - Phoenix.

XII, you had to specific things in order to get to your summons, whether completing sidequests in order to get to an Esper, or to follow specific instructions on how to reach one successfully. Adrammalech you just had to walk around in Zertinan Caverns to find. Others you had to fight storyline wise - Hashmal, Belias, Shemazai.

I'd have to say that XII's method of acquiring them was my favorite one too. Fighting a summon to obtain them and finally beating them after a hard battle feels so rewarding. In every Final Fantasy you fight at least one summon to obtain them, but XII is the only one that I know of where you have to fight them all in order to be able to finally use them in battle and that's why it feels so epic when you have them all.

I think I'll go with X, though I think that fighting them rather than praying for them would've been more interesting - this would show the real strength of the Summoner and her Guardians. I do, however, like the thought of "merging" with the Fayth and receiving the embodied entity, the Aeon.

Other than that, I'll say IX's Summon Jewels (which could accumulate and increase their strength) and XII, for the same reasons as Busta.

I like fighting summons to obtain them, I always feel like Ive really achieved summat then, or even drawing them like in VIII, because it's still a battle, and you DO fight some of them anyway..... So really Id say any FF that involves fighting to obtain them, XII obviously have the most battles there so XII has the best way of obtaining them I guess

I liked the idea of the trials in X, they just werent challenging enough - although the dark aeons MORE than made up for that <_<

I like the idea of having to battle them, too. It's just a shame the actual summoning in XII wasn't as impressive as the battles endured to obtain them.

I also love materia, so seeing a red one always made me smile!

I too like fighting summons to obtain them, but it certainly is not an idea that began with XII -- this method has appeared in III, IV, V, VIII, X and XII. While I agree that it does give a sense of accomplishment, it is beginning to lose its novelty. Thus...

Favorite: VII. I like the idea of materia in general, and this just adds a new wrinkle: It is as if the summon has been "fossilized" by the life stream, and you recover and restore it. This has a similar implication in IX, as if the Eidolon were fossilized in the gem.

Least Favorite: Any game where you buy the summon -- if these were really powerful beasts they would not be available in Walz for 100 gil a pop. Tied for least favorite I guess would be VIII. Although I love VIII drawing summons made little sense. I guess the idea is that the bosses had them junctioned, but if so you think they would have used them. That would have been cool, but sadly only Ultimecia does it
