I pulled this off of 4chan (of all places) in a FFIX discussion on the /v/ boards.

Seeming as Final Fantasy 9 is the favourite in the series, I'll explain to you what happened.

In Final Fantasy 5 (I think), Gilgamesh sacrifices himself to help the party defeat a boss called Necrophobe, this banishes Necrophobe to a void of it's own dimension. As many of you already know, Gilgamesh has the ability to skip through the dimensions into the realms of other Final Fantasy games, and the void fills as a passageway inbetween the universes. At the end of Final Fantasy 9, the crystal of life is destroyed, thus ending the FF9 universe. Temporarily, the party members are sent into this void dimension, where they encounter the previously banished Necrophobe in an altered form - 'Necron'.

Necron had assigned itself as the ruler of this separate dimension, and its aim was to keep the party members there, however by defeating Necron the party members manage to escape the void and return to their true universe.

True stuff.

Personally, after thinking about it, it does make sense. He kind of contradicts himself when he explains that the FFIX universe was destroyed, but they go back to it. However, it could have easily been recreated after Necron was defeated the FFIX universe was brought back through the powers of the crystal.

Or after Zidane and co went to the void, the world of Gaia was still there and everyone else was all "WTF?". Anyway, I thought it was a pretty good read, and wanted to share.

Whether or not it is Necrophobe I would imagine there is a link between IX and V, which is understandable seeming as IX is a tribute to all the classic FFs.

Both final battles involve trees (Exdeath is a tree, final level is the Iifa tree), both use Grand Cross, both want nothingness.

The thing that makes me think it isn't Necrophobe is that it isn't called Necron in the Japanese version.

This is actually an interesting theory :hmmm: I'd been wondering about this myself, but it makes sense. Interesting note about Gilgamesh too, I've not played V so I didn't realize he had that ability.

That's actually a really interesting theory. I'm surprised you found it on 4chan :monster:

Canon or not, it still provides a logical explanation to Necron's appearance (which is largely regarded as random). So for that, I commend whoever came up with the theory.

4Chan :ffs:. Everything wrong with the internet.

Anyway. Yeah, I did always wonder where that shithead came from. I thought he was the most random boss ever. But, unfortunately, I agree with the others. It is actually a pretty sound hypothesis. :hmmm:

From what I heard he was the spirit version of Soul Cage, which makes sense since Soul cage was the 'material' tree while Necron is the 'spiritual' tree.

Still, this is an interesting theory too, either could be possible :hmmm:

This is an interesting theory, without a doubt, i've not finished V so i'm not sure who Necrophobe is, although I did find the similarity between Necrophobe and Necron amusing. However, I do love to read theories and stuff and it's not really an impossibility, but very open to discussion. :hmmm:
It could be true though, as mentioned before IX is the one which tends to reference the older games a lot, and it's also believed that VIII Gilgamesh is V Gilgamesh as well, isn't it?
Either way, I still don't know where Necron came from, but i'm open to suggestions and/or theories.

I have read more about the Necrophobe. It is nice theories. I have still played the V. It is really very nice game. I wish that I will get more information about the similarity between Necrophobe and Necron as well.
