SOTW / AOTW Discussion & Results

Shahab makes a legitimate point, obviously if one takes a completely finished sig or whatever and makes a minor alteration, it's really too lazy to count as your own effort. But if there's visible effort being done to alter the graphic in a new way, it should count. I really see nothing wrong with it unless you claim that it's all your own material.

Submitting a link to where you got your stock or whatever is easy enough, and prevents dishonesty, but it does have it's problems. Alot of times I'll see a stock or C4D that looks really cool and I'll save it in case I ever want to do something with it, and I won't come back to it until months later. Half the images I have I don't remember where I found them, or if I do I don't have the name of the person who did them. That will complicate the matter because you'll just be getting people saying "I found this on DeviantArt" or "I found this on google." In the end, it won't make that much of a difference.

As for the stocks we have on our PCs and have forgot where did we find them, we can simply upload them on an image hosting site and put the link here.

Look at this realistically for a second. We all "use a pre-made graphic and touch it up a bit." Did you make that anime character in your sig? I doubt it. Did I make that image of Meta Knight in my sig? No, I took it off a wiki. How many of us create our own C4Ds and brushes instead of just browsing DeviantArt? Not many, I'm willing to bet.
I think that there is a little misunderstanding here.
Let's imagine that this week's theme is "Assassin creed sig"
We're not gonna make the assassin creed character by ourselves, but we find the stocks on net.
But some members find a simple and un-designed stock like this
and cut it outa the BG and work on it.
And some others may find a pre-designed renders like This and touch it a bit without cutting it out of the BG.
Using other brushes on net sounds fair. the designer is the one who chooses how to use them and what to do after using them. still needs some creation.
Anyway making brushes and GFX using photoshop is not that hard.Once you learn it, it's piece of cake.

In the graphics community, that is what's called ripping.

If I find anyone building on already completed signatures/graphics without permission from from the original artist, there will not only be disqualification from whatever contest you entered it, but additional consequences as well.

Reminds me that we need to put up a rule about ripping. Ripping = trouble, and we don't want it. The last thing I want is some little faggot crying about his pictures being built upon instead of calmly approaching a staff member via PM.:monster:

There's a fine line between using a stock and a complete graphic, though.

Let me clear that up.
By a premade graphic, I don't mean a plain stock, or a C4D. I mean something that has been already made into a wallpaper/sig/avatar. For example; you take something that has been made into a wallpaper, and then manipulate the colors, add effects/C4Ds, and text. You've done a good amount of things to it, but the foundation is someone else's work.

Ah, okay, I get what you mean now :neomon: In that case, I suppose it's a very fine line. Claiming something like that as my own obviously would be theft, but it also presents the situation of "I really liked this piece, I wanted to see what else could be done with it" for the fun of it. It's really quite iffy -__-

Right, I have no idea what to do for SOTW 52. I honestly don't. I don't want to do Freestyle for awhile, since we've had a lot of those, and it's not challenging enough. So I'm open to suggestions, for both SOTW and AOTW.

Looks like you've already decided on one. =] I shall have fun with that theme. Ah, but don't forget the AOTW 4 guidelines. ;)

Yeah I forgot about AOTW 4, I have no idea what to make the theme for that...

Bleh, I'm just going to make it the same as SOTW.

I don't. Been looking for about half-an-hour for any interesting stocks and renders yesterday...but I can't seem to find any. =[

last call for this week's icon/avatar competition. I only have one entry.

So the #52 is ANYTHING related to Batman yes?
Why so serious...mwhahaha, I have mine decided :wacky:

Everyone will do Heath Ledger. I was thinking of submitting something with Harley in it but I can't find a decent render. D:

I planned on doing Heath Ledger xD
It could work against you or for you if everyone does Ledger, depending on the mindset of people.

As for images, I'm going with stocks :monster:

Well, I need the entries for tomorrow, and so far, only three people have entered >_> and only one person has entered AOTW >_>

Ahh, well you already know what's up with my situation. >.>

I hope I can get my laptop fixed soon, and if not, then I shall have to buy a new one. So yes, I'll be taking a few weeks - months hiatus from Photoshop. =[

Ah, don't forget AOTW 5. I know our avatar entries have been really low, but hopefully that will change soon. I still plan to enter SOTW 53 but it's just a matter of time until I finally get Photoshop installed on my new laptop. Or I can do it in my other PC, so yeah, either way I'm entering. xD

Well, if Derek is online today, and not busy with WoW, both SOTW 55 and AOTW 5 guidelines should go up tonight =]
