Remember a few weeks ago when we reported on the legal dispute between Sony and LG? The two companies have entered litigation regarding patent infringements by both sides. LG is claiming that the Blu-ray drives in PlayStation 3 consoles use four of their patents without permission; the company is seeking remuneration.
Did you give the court battle a second thought after reading that piece? No one would blame you for not doing so, but things just got ugly for Sony. LG has been awarded a temporary injunction, which has resulted in all PS3 shipments across Europe and the UK being blocked by customs officials.

The civil court of justice in the Hague has ordered customs officials to seize all new shipments of PS3 consoles for the next ten days. The injunction is a temporary one but seeing as it has been awarded to LG, things are not looking too great for Sony. According to reports on The Guardian, if the injunction is extended it would mean PlayStation 3 consoles being removed from shops as well.
Sony imports 100 000 PS3s a week into Europe, and on average a retail store has enough stock for about two to three weeks. Those are now being seized and stored in Rotterdam and Schipol, the two main import points for Sony in Europe. If LG wins this legal dispute, Sony will be forced to pay them compensation for every single PS3 unit sold across the globe. According to The Guardian, that figure would be in the “hundreds of millions of pounds”.
Naturally, Sony is trying to get this injunction lifted as soon as possible.

Sony will be forced to pay them compensation for every single PS3 unit sold across the globe.

EVERY SINGLE FUCKING PS3?

WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW....

I'd be scared if I was Sony.

But cmon....

Why do they gots to fight, instead they could collaborate and make their sales launch off into the sky.

I'd be surprised if it came to much, if Sony had to pay compensation for each of the 45 million+ consoles they've sold plus an extra couple of million that need to be shipped then it would be far from healthy for the company. The in turn they'd be forcing companies that owe Sony money to pay up and the spiral continues. If a massive company go bust then it's more than Sony who will feel it.

If i'm not mistaken, LG initiated this lawsuit against Sony in response to one of their own litigation against LG, right?

either way, this is a dick move by LG. once again, corporation execs prove to be massive assholes.

Large companies declaring war on each other through the courts tends to be something commonplace nowadays and little of it surprises me anymore. If Company X has this product that looks like it's using some of our obscure patents without permission or is Company Y's product looks even slightly anything like my concept designs, then I must sue the ass out of that company for as much money as I can. It's that kind of mentality that makes things very volatile and delicate for any large multinational company nowadays with so much vested interest. I don't know the full context of this dispute, but I will be surprised if LG is awarded with their full demands. If Sony is to cough up that much for every one of their units, it will not be good news for them or the future of the console itself. At a time when Sony is recovering from its less successful days when the PS3 was first launched and with everything they have on the horizon, this would be the last thing anyone would want. As for LG, they're just arrogant as hell like a lot of other companies. A dispute has never broken out until now when the PS3 has picked up so much pace at the moment. It's almost like a: "Hey, let's accuse Sony of violating some of our patents now they're making money!"

The blu ray players which dont run all blue rays dvds (y)

Rich companies get even richer, whats new?

Whoa...Just whoa.

What exactly were these 4 patents that LG had dibs on before Sony? Why only wait until recently to say anything about this then? The PS3 has been in circulation for over 5 years now, right?
