...if you cut off that little puff ball on most Moogles heads? Do they explode or something? Or is it like declawing a cat, something that wont necessarily kill them, but isn't particularly humane?

I'm wondering this because I always thought it would be rather inconvenient to have a big fluffy punching bag growing off of your head.

I guess it would just be like cutting the tail of a cat or summat....dunno, it might have uses, like, magic related...or maybe it's just for balance

I think it's ace, I wantone :mokken:

I've always wondered about the use of the pom-pom.

It might be:
To help them communicate.
Displays / used in mating rituals.
A sensing organ like antennae (though you'd notice if it was I guess).
It might be an organ that regulates temperature or something.
Or it could be to help balance...
Maybe it can sense wind direction while a moogle flies.
Perhaps it contains their brain.
Or perhaps the creators just placed it there for a laugh.

I'm not too sure. And since I don't know the function, it is hard to say what the effect will be if you snip it off.

Perhaps it will say "Ow! That's mean, kupo!" and that'll be the end of it.

Perhaps it will bleed to death, the stringy thing holding a main artery (or if it contains it's brain, will cut supply / everything to the brain and kill it).

Perhaps (if used for display and mating rituals) then cutting it off will destroy a moogles pride, perhaps ruin any chance of ever finding a mate. It'll be a cruel thing to do, but might not kill it. The moogle might, however, kill itself, or at least go into isolation. :sad2:

If it is a crucial sensory organ then I'm guessing the moogle will lose a lot of functions, balance and will be an even clumsier flier than it already is.

So I don't think a moogle will be very happy with you if you are thinking about cutting it off to see what happens.

I think a few moogles have said "Oi don't play with my pom-pom, kupo!" (or something along those lines) at some point in different games, so I don't think they like it being teased.. This might just be because they are annoying fluffy balls dangling from their heads, or it could be because they provide a very important function and if they are damaged then a moogle could be in serious trouble, or die.

It's a communication device, used to stay in contact with all other Moogles in the world, and through to other universes (other FF games).

If you cut it off, and other Moogles try to contact your Moogle, they will send out various search and rescue squads to retrieve your Moogle. Once they have found that you intentionally cut off his antenna, they will declare war on you.

And trust me... You don't want. I don't want that. No one wants that.

So why test it, eh?

I thought maybe it functions like those weird head-tail things in Avatar, like they can somehow connect pom-poms and mate that way or something. I dunno.

Though I like the suggestion about it holding it's brain, which would be far more amusing. :p

:gasp:
I can't picture the moogles without the pom poms so I wouldn't want to cutt it off/ etc that'd be mean D=

I'm sure it wouldn't kill them but, then the moogles wouldn't be moogles you know? That's like their symbol it belongs to them XD.
I'm sure it has some use because then what would the point of it be? Maybe it's some unknown force of power and any given monent they could do something drastic :gonk:. Maybe magic or for speaking to one another or something... :hmmm:
dunno, maybe its a pom pom cheerleaders use and can lift your peoples spirit? XD no clue.
Either way, it serves a purpose i'm sure. >_> what it is though, not sure.

Really, Dan? 8F One of your theories is that the pompom contains their brain? If so, their creator must have been on something because it sounds rather inconvenient for the nerve system to send impulses all the way up to the pompom and back down again.

I'll just settle with the fact that the pompoms are used as a communication method or something. I'm sure there have been cases or mentionings of Moogles having sophisticated communication skills somewhere before. :hmmm:

As my signature shows, I am a Moogle fan! I protect and fight for Moogles' rights, freedom and cuteness. No one will dare do such a terrible thing to them with me here! :gasp:

They seem to be full of some sort of "Lighter than air" gas.
I mean even in your sig Elena they are clearly floating rather than weighing down those stringy things they are attached to. Unless the stringy thing is a very strong muscle...

You want balls sprouting from your head? :ryan:

But seriously, I guess the Moogle's pompom could be similar to how a Ronso threats its horn. In the Ronso Tribe, the size of the horn represents the strength of the Ronso, and having it removed was a dishonorable act that brought shame to the punished Ronso. Perhaps the PomPom is a symbol of status, or perhaps the source of their magical power.

Why so much of a fuzz by a big ball growing out from someone's forehead? :mokken:

I agree they are probably light, but I think the stringy thing is quite strong too. The pom-poms don't seem to float freely enough as if to suggest that the string is loose and it is the pom-poms that keep themselves up by floating. If you tie a balloon to the ground outside you'd expect it to move a lot, and be moved about by the wind direction, and just bounce along apparantly randomly at times too.

I think the moogle pom-pom's are attached with strong string, perhaps more like a wire, but not as strong as that, which will move a bit but for the most part they are in their shape. I don't think the pom-poms flap all over the place and into their faces. Instead often moogle pom-pom string is depicted as curving towards the top, sometimes the height the string reaches at the curve is higher than the pom-pom would reach. I think it instead acts a bit like a spring.

I think there are probably strong but tiny muscles in the string which enables them to control the movement of the pom-pom, perhaps instinctively. Perhaps when surprised the string straightens out to it's full length, making the pom-pom stand higher than it's slightly droopy state that it is often drawn in. Likewise if a moogle is sad, it may droop more, and even hang down it's face.

With these kind of thoughts in mind, perhaps it is for communication. If a scared moogle spots a behemoth rampaging through the forest, then a straightened pom-pom will be spotted by other moogles, who will then realise there is a threat before the moogle can find the strength to say "Ahhhh, Kupo! :O", by which time the behemoth might be too close to escape from.

Then again.. The extended form might not be that noticeable. It won't look much different from the slightly droopy pom-pom look. The difference might, however, be obvious to a moogle.

I'd love them to expand on this actually. :hmmm:

I am guessing that the ball allows them to use magic or communicate to each other secretly. It could sustain their life and when cut off, they die. I think that it gives them the ability to cast magic and when cut off, their magic potency is dropped or even cut off period.
