So did you end up dropping Netflix?

"In July, to address the structural underpinnings of the business, he announced that the company would start charging $8 a month for both its streaming service and its DVD service, a total of $16 a month for the combination. Previously, DVDs were a $2 add-on to the $8 streaming service. Of course, subscribers who only wanted one service or the other — most new subscribers only want the online streams — saw no price hike, but that fact was drowned out by the outcry.

Netflix expected some of its 25 million subscribers to cancel in the wake of the price change, but the cancellation rate exceeded expectations. The company said on Sept. 15 that it expected to report a quarterly decline of about one million in the third quarter, which ended on Sept. 30.

Still, it pressed forward, announcing the breakup plan the night of Sept. 17. “Companies rarely die from moving too fast, and they frequently die from moving too slowly,” Mr. Hastings wrote in a blog post that night. His implication then was that Netflix had to act aggressively to expand its fast-growing streaming service by severing its older, slower DVD-by-mail arm.

In a sentence that now seems like a bit of foreshadowing, Mr. Hastings also wrote, “It is possible we are moving too fast — it is hard to say.”

So yes, this is my netflix thread...with an update that they will not be seperating into two different companies...one for streaming and one for dvd's...apparently they didn't think that one out too well :wacky:

This jist of this thread is really me asking who has it and/or ended up canceling because of the price hike?

I personally love the service for dvd's, but I feel like the streaming part of it for an extra $6 a month is totally not worth it. I did get some movies streamed (flawlessly I might add) through my ps3 before the hike and while it was convenient, I feel that the selection of movies and shows was much to be desired...which is why I feel the streaming part is a bit of a rip off. I know, I know, its the future of movie watching but Netflix really isn't up to par with it as of right now, in my opinion.

So I shall keep getting my dvds in the mail :griin: ...and the streaming...no thank-you :hmph:

I never had netflix, but charging 16 bucks a month seems a bit of a desperate attempt on their part. I know the economy hasn't gotten better all that much, but really? their going to charge more? Like I said, I never had Netflix. And by reading this, I do not think I ever will if their going to be charging sixteen bucks a month. :hmph:

I have a few friends who ended up cancelling the dvd service and a couple more who cancelled the whole service as a whole.

I personally at the time had a 2 disc dvd and streaming service account I have since removed the disc service entirely. I was annoyed because new releases are delayed over a month before they are sent to me anyway. The streaming service does have alot of garbage you have to wade through to find the gems but it does have alot of good movies and shows on it.

I find I toss netflix shows, movies and anime on alot while I do other things around the house or work on stuff so its helpful to have around. I have subjected myself to renting movies via red box but really since netflix DVD service stopped the whole new releases thing I found myself buying more movies new which costs me way more money but less time in the end.

The main problem is that hulu and amazon streaming are not up to the same par as netflix. Hulu plus is the worst of the 3 because they do not have half the things on the website on it. Amazon is trying but it will be a while though I have heard through the rumor mill that netflix may sell their streaming service to hulu and go all dvd.

In the end its really a personal preference I have three other people in my house who use the streaming service so cancelling it is not much of an option though nobody noticed the discs are gone much.

I still have instant but canceled the mail plan.

The instant is still too nice for me to live without, but I was running out of stuff that I wanted to wait a month to get when the local movie store (which surprisingly still exists) has them right away. I love watching TV shows on instant view though so couldn't cancel it.

It's way nicer than having to pay for each separate disc that only have two episodes on them anyway :mokken:

I used to have the One DVD plus unlimited streaming for $8.99 when I first joined. I actually found that I rarely ever ordered DVDs and when I did, I never watched them. I always used the streaming instead. So when they switched over to a streaming only plan, I just went with that one and I still use it quite a bit.

They have a lot of old tv shows that I used to watch and a pretty decent selection of movies. I'm not sure whether they have a good amount of newer stuff but I haven't really seen any newer movies out that I'd want to watch anyway.

your lucky you even get this... england has like no streaming services apart from lovefilm and they have no decent films :hmph: i heard Netflix is meant to have a decent anime collection which the uk also lacks :hmph: the uk meant to finally be getting it early next year and i would go for the streaming only plan as sitting on your pc or ipad watching films without discs sounds awesome.. and you have no late fees or waiting forever for the mail to give you awesome stuff :wacky:
