Rumours continue to gain Stream

Nintendo Stream, Project Café, Wii 2: whatever you want to call Nintendo's next home console, you might be calling it "expensive" if the latest suggestion from rumour epicentre IGN is to be believed.

Claiming the system will run a custom-built AMD graphics chip that outperforms PlayStation 3, IGN points to a retail price of between $350 and $400 for the console, which would make it far more expensive than any other console currently on the market.

Why such a high price? Obviously the powerful graphics technology and screen-toting controller contribute to the cost, with IGN also claiming the system will have the potential to support stereoscopic 3DTV sets, though it does say this may not be an integral part of the machine.

And the all-important release date? Possibly as early as mid-October 2011, with IGN hedging its bets by stating Nintendo may want to stockpile more consoles for an early 2012 release.

We'll continue to dig in the hope of one day, eventually, getting to the bottom of these rumours.

Ah, Nintendo love setting ridiculously high prices for their new consoles, don't they? Looks like the bargain era of the DS and the Wii is over...alas.

Whoa... This is coming out pretty early if I do say so myself. If Xbox 720 and PS IV will be out in 2014 then this certainly is coming out pretty early. Just a rumor though so I am not getting my hopes up high yet. This is certainly expensive for a new Nintendo console but I shall look into it and possibly buy it right away if it interests me... Didn't we just get the 3DS though? :gasp: As for the games on it I wonder... will they be making a new Super smash bros? :yay:

Ouch, that just made a lot of wallets cry. Still, I wasn't expecting anything very different. With greater technological power comes an inflated price tag anyway which was never to be mitigated by a controller that seems like it would rival smartphones in the price department. This really does seem like a gigantic gamble for Nintendo. They had this whole doctrine of innovation before power when it came to the Wii and its low price tag compared to its competition made it very appealing. To throw it away now in hopes of attracting mass third party support could be ingenious or heavily dangerous. The lofty price tag will certainly put many people off and I'm not sure whether people are ready yet to move to a console like this when the PS3 and Xbox 360 remain healthy. As for the Wii well, who knows. It could just die now, or it could remain alive due to how cheap it is to make games for in comparison. I suppose if the diehard "hardcore Nintendo" club want to go somewhere, this next console could be it, right?

Three hundred and fifty dollars does not sound all that expensive when you think of the price of the current gen systems when they first came out. It's only one hundred dollars more than when the Wii came out. The biggest question is: what kind of system will this be? The rumors say that it might outperform the PS3 graphics-wise, but where are these rumors coming from, anyway? Will Nintendo try to compete with current systems graphically? I doubt trying this will do Nintendo any favors unless this new system is several levels above the 360 and PS3.

When the Wii came out, Nintendo said that they were not going to compete in the "console war", didn't they? So, the question is whether or not Nintendo will try to bring something new to the table rather than just upping the graphics. I heard that Nintendo will be revealing this system in June during E3, so I guess we'll just have to wait until then to find out.

I doubt this is true. We still have line-ups for games coming out for the Wii. If this comes out in october. Then people will be too adicted to this to play the new Wii games.

WiiU – First close-up hardware images and hands-on test

Keza MacDonald has just been one of the first journalists in the world to get hands-on time with WiiU, Nintendo’s next console. We have shots and impressions inside.

wiiukeza2.jpg

Here are the shots Keza just took of the device. Only the tablet controller was usable, with the console itself being hidden in a pod.

The hands-on impressions are on the way.

For every details on WiiU’s reveal today in LA, hit this. Full a Nintendo E3 press conference report, detailing 3DS and Wii announcements, hit this.

Oh WiiU, you seem so out of place. It's trying to appeal to casuals still but will they really understand how to do all the gimmicks? And why buy when all the new gadgets are able to do the same.

The line-up was pretty interesting though, a pretty strong one but with games already in the market. :/ At least Nintendo managed to wrangle 3rd party support this time.

Going to have to wait for TGS most likely for actual specs on the console and more info with Wiimote connectivity etc.

Well that's definitely off my list. If this is true, I could get more out of 350 like an awesome PC that could run the new Star Wars games or some other game! :C

Its not even worth it for any future Zelda game. Sorry Nintendo! T.T

Wii U controller won’t be sold seprately, confirms Nintendo

Nintendo’s confirmed that the tablet controller for Wii U won’t be sold as a separate device, and will be packaged as one unit with the console.

wiiu1.jpg

“Both the controller and the console will be sold as one unit. You won’t be able to buy the controller alone,” a rep told CVG.

Nintendo also said that multiplayer games for the console is being made to use one tablet controller, while other users will need to use a Wiimote.

Nintendo unveiled Wii U for the first time during Nintendo’s press conference last night.

Wii U details emerge – 25GB media, single controller support, no classic controls, more

Nintendo finally revealed its new console during the E3 press conference last night, however details are still pouring in about Wii U, which features an innovative new controller among other things.

wiiukeza31.jpg

We’ve rounded up some new information which has emerged about the console below.

Nintendo’s Katsuya Eguchi gave Kotaku some concrete details about the system. He said that the console’s disc format will be capable of storing up to 25 GB of data.

He also confirmed that the device will support external USB drives, but declined to comment regarding the console’s internal memory capacity.

In a separate Kotaku piece, Eguchi revealed that Nintendo’s considering its options of making games for the Wii U which will support two controllers.

Although he refused to comment about their plans to price the controller, he did admit that they’re aware that it can be an obstacle if they price it too high.

“I do understand that if the price is too high that would be an obstacle”, he sympathised.

In another report, Nintendo confirmed something Smash Bros fans certainly won’t be pleased to hear about: the Wii U will not support GameCube controllers.

A Nintendo representative divulged further intel to CVG, confirming that the controller and the console will be sold as one unit, and you won’t get a option to the buy the controller as a standalone product.

Additionally, he mentioned that multiplayer titles being developed for the Wii U are only being designed to accommodate one Wii U controller, while other players will have to use the Wiimote.

Engadget has some info in the Wii U’s CPU, which they”ve got from sources within IBM. Apparently, the Wii U CPU “packs the same processor technology found in Watson” – the company’s very own supercomputer.

The comparison is rather far-fetched as according to IBM Watson has a total of 2880 processor cores backed by 16 terabytes of RAM. The processor achitecture’s based on POWER7, which occupies a lot of silicon in its current form and clearly isn’t suitable for a home games console.

Engadget’s sources also hint at a 45nm fabrication process (the same that the PS3′s used for over a year now) along with a “lot of DRAM”.

Digital Foundry’s carrying a detailed analysis regarding these rumoured specs, and you can read it over here.

Iwata: Wii U “likely” to cost more than $250

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has hinted that Wii U will cost more than $250 following its unveiling last night during the company’s E3 press conference.

iwata-wiiu.jpg

Speaking to Nikkei, as translated by Bloomberg, Iwata said that the console will “likely” cost more than ¥20,000, which is £150 or $250 when converted into real money.

Wii’s launch price was £180 in the UK and $250 in the US in 2006.
In an interview with GTTV‘s Geoff Keighley, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime would have “fantastic value,” and that it’ll also have a “competitive value” as well.

No launch details for Wii U – such as price or launch timeline other than just 2012 – were announced

Wii U controller gets demoed

Nintendo’s released a video which gives you a detailed demo of the Wii U’s unique new touchscreen controller.

wiiulogojune.jpg

The video takes you through three playable Wii U demos – Chase Mii, Battle Mii and Shield Pose. It explains in detail about how you can get around to playing them with your shiny new Wii U controller.

The video also has other folks playing alongside the person who is using the Wii U controller, but they are seen using the regular WiiMote. This is because the Wii U currently only supports one touchscreen controller per console. Watch the interesting looking demo after the break.

Sega exec drops spring-summer 2012 release timeline for Wii U

Sega EVP of marketing Alan Pritchard has dropped a super strong hint as to when we’ll see Wii U, saying it’s due to launch next spring or summer.

wiiuconsole.jpg

The slip came in an E3 interview with GameSpot when asked if Sonic Generations was coming to the platform. By the by, chances on that are slim.

“The timing just doesn’t work,” Pritchard said.

“Generations releases this November, and the Wii U is coming out next spring/summer. I think one of the things we don’t have to do, or reduce where possible, is we don’t want to port games. I think if there’s going to be a Sonic game for the Wii U, it needs to be built from the ground up.

“It’s more likely that it would be a separate stand-alone installment or in conjunction with a multiplatform release in the future. But to bring out Generations on a platform six or eight months after we release PS3, 360, and 3DS probably won’t be the best strategy.”

Nintendo has only confirmed a 2012 launch so far to date for Wii U, which was long announced before its first showing at E3 last week.
Sega also announced last week that Aliens: Colonial Marines from Gearbox would be on Wii U.

Wii U Is Actually 50% More Powerful Than PS3 - Report

Wii U will be HD, supporting up to 1080p resolution just like Xbox 360 and PS3, but beyond that it's unclear how powerful the hardware will ultimately be when it ships sometime next year. Nintendo never provides a full breakdown, although the company did say that the form factor is "near final." While many assumed Wii U would be on par with the current HD consoles, word is coming in from developers that it's quite a bit more powerful.

Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia commented today, "Some of the developers we spoke to indicated to us that the console will have 50% more processing power compared to the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. This is yet to be confirmed by Nintendo."

At E3 last week, Nintendo did little to prove this point. During the press conference, footage of Xbox 360 and PS3 titles was used, although the company did show off an impressive tech demo of a bird flying around some trees, and Nintendo also created a very pretty tech demo to represent what a new Zelda might look like.

Wii U – First Online Details Revealed

During a round table event with several third parties, Ubisoft has let slip some incredibly important details concerning the Wii U’s online infrastructure. The best news, however, is the days of friend codes are finally numbered as the Wii U will now implement a new account based system. This is exactly what Ubisoft had to say:

The first is the ability for individuals to make accounts. Rather than a machine having an account, each individual user has an account.”

When asked if it was very near the same as the Xbox Live experience, the Ubisoft employee, producer Adrian Blunt, said:

“Yeah, exactly”

Finally, he said that friend codes are no longer needed to add friends to your online experience:

“Also the ability to easily find friends. Rather than using friend codes, which we’ve had in the past, we’re able to connect players in a much easier way, which allows us to have a community that’s playing together in the game.”

We’re hoping to hear more information regarding the new online service very soon. We’ll keep you posted.

More Wii U Online Details Revealed – Supports Friends List, Achievements, Online Match Scheduling

Considering Nintendo themselves are being pretty tight-lipped about the Wii U’s online capabilities, it would seem Ubisoft are revealing more than they really should about the console. Not only did they reveal that the console would drop friend codes, but now they’re revealing more information regarding the Wii U’s online.

The first new detail is the fact that the Wii U will be able to track your online process, regardless of what game you’re playing. Not only will it track you, but it will also track your friends and will compare who’s furtherest in a game, who has the highest score, etc.

Ubisoft have also said that Nintendo Wii U owners will be able to link their accounts [not consoles] to their Club Nintendo accounts, in similar fashion to the PSN Store and Xbox Live. We’re presuming that through this, you’ll be able to track games, download new content and view the latest information regarding the game through this one service.

Another big piece of information is the use achievements in-game. Ubisoft have said that they will be used in the game tracking and will be shown in each player’s profile – mainly for bragging rights.

Finally, it was confirmed by Ubisoft that some games will allow players to schedule online matches with friends using just the controller. So, if you’re watching a TV show or a film, when the time comes, a notification will appear on your controller to inform you to start playing the match you set up.

All of this sounds incredibly amazing, especially for a Nintendo console. With some Nintendo-flare to the online community and making it as open as possible, I can see Nintendo have the strongest online infrastructure out of the big three. Do you think the new details are worth getting excited over?

Nintendo seems to be keeping to the trend of wanting to avoid being a multimedia system as opposed to a game system.

http://kotaku.com/5812090/the-wii-u-will-not-play-dvds-and-blu+ray-discs

I'm a bit bummed out by that. It felt like the Gamecube was being left behind when it couldn't play anything aside from games, then the Wii even more so, and now this. Yes, I have stuff that can play movies and music anyway, but it means it's always one more thing I have to have set up and ready to go, or to move around.
