So... I have to admit, it probably sounds quite ridiculous, but the game Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward kinda motivated me into thinking about getting a new console for myself. Well, last I bought any console was a good... 5 years? Maybe more. Seems like a good time to start getting a new one, and especially now with new consoles having been released fairly recently.

For me, I prefer the more 'portable' consoles. I know the PS3 and the X Box both have much better games, but I probably won't have the time to play those when school actually starts. That, and having only one television set at home, I don't want to be fighting with my parents over that... Which is why I'm considering only the PSP Vita or the Nintendo 3DS.

The game I'm eyeing releases on both consoles, so its cool. But I can't get both. I have to choose one. While I'm thinking about this, I would also like to hear from you guys. Which would you recommend to me?

The 3DS has a pretty good library of old games, if that's your thing: it can play all your old DS games, and there are some excellent classic titles on the 3DS eshop, with more on the way. In terms of original titles, it has...well, nothing really. Luigi's Mansion 2 is on the horizon, as is a new Fire Emblem game and an intriguing Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game, but otherwise...it's a nostalgia console. Ocarina of Time, Lylat Wars, Tales of the Abyss...etc. Buy a 3DS if you miss some old games and want to play them again, or like those gimmicky game genres, like rhythm or puzzle games. Games that don't have much in the way of interactive, varied gameplay. That's the 3DS. The 3D gimmick is awful as well, unless you get an XL; the chances are you will play it with the 3D off, in which case it is just a slightly more powerful DS, without the wonderful backwards compatibility with the GBA. Really, if you wanted a 3DS, you should have bought it at launch, so you were included in the ambassador scheme; they gave away some of the better GBA games as a result of that.

The PS Vita has more potential, in my opinion. As well as having a significantly larger library than the 3DS - it has access to a lot of good PS1 classics now, as well as most PSP games put up on the store - I think it's likely to get more attention and developer support as time goes by. PS Vita has some intriguing original titles, as well...they're just few and far between. But the likes of Gravity Rush show what the console can do, and if it gets more titles like that in the future, then it will definitely be worth the money. Plus, the screen is GORGEOUS; if you were to go on the basis of which looks better, the Vita will win, every time. Not to mention the 3DS doesn't have dual analogue, whereas the PS Vita does, and unlike the PSP's crappy little nub, these are proper miniaturized analogue sticks. Many PSP titles - Monster Hunter Freedom Unite being the most notable - have Vita dual analogue support, and believe me, it is a lot easier to play them with that.

But to be honest, I would recommend you not buy either, and wait to see if either actually gets anything in the way of original titles that are actually worth buying in the future: both are evenly matched in how bleak the future looks for them. Right now, you would be literally buying either console for just that one game, because the Vita's library is pitifully sparse, and the 3DS' is made up of either remasters of overrated N64 titles or the usual mix of crap you get with every console on the market these days. Take a look at the DS and PSP libraries, and ask yourself which looks more appealing to you, and then pick the Vita or 3DS based on that, because right now, there is little of merit on either console to justify the purchase.

The PSP is an RPG machine.. You can play the awsome PS1 classic RPG's as well as all the squaresoft gems. And since it is all digital there are no slowdowns. Besides you have some really cool action games such as God of War, Dante's inferno, Ratchet and Clank etc.. Awesome Platformers, classic PS1 Crash Bandicoot games, Littlebigplanet Vita is really good apparently and the PSP original is not so bad either. Daxter, Secret Agent Clank and the list goes on. Oh and if you enjoy SRPG look no further..Oh and did when FFX HD is release you can play final fantasy 1-10 on ps Vita! Not to mention the persona games, lunar games, ys games, sting games, metal gear games, survival horror games, breath of fire games, star ocean games and Valkyrie Profile Lenneth.. It is just a huge collection of great classics and modern games.

The DS is kind of mixed bag.. it has remasters of Dragon Quest games which is really cool and some nice Shin Megami Tensei Titles but dont forget that PS vita will ahve acess to P3 and Persona 4. It has some boring dungeon crawlers but atleast it has Pokemon games. It has the good old mario and Zelda games which are basically puzzlers disguised as Rpgs´(The Zelda games obviously). You also have the Ace Attorney series here if you are a fan.. It is more like casual gamer heaven.

Overall I prefer the PS Vita just because you will be able to play PS1 classics aswell as PSP games and Some PS3 games.. it is a portable PS3 basically.

Ahh, so you're interested in getting Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, huh? :3 It's tough to say which portable system you should get...

PSVita - Personally, the PSVita has more potential, a wonderfully huge screen, great access to a wide range of RPGs, etc. However, if you're a major RPG fan, chances are you will have most of the older RPGs that are available on the PSN. I'm not sure about anyone else, but I feel iffy paying money for older games that I already own && can play on my PS3 (it's the backwards compatible one). With that said, you might be interested in playing your favorite RPGs on-the-go, so perhaps that idea seems attractive to you. In terms of newer titles, the PSVita is lacking at the moment. Sure, Persona 4: Golden will release soon, as well as Assassin's Creed Liberation, but other than that, there are no other games for me to look forward to... -.-;

3DS - At the moment, I prefer the 3DS' library of games because they have tons of new titles - not just rehashed older titles. Also, I love my share of music games (Theatrhythm: FF, Rhythm Thief). I literally have a list of games that I'll be looking forward to for the 3DS: Pokemon Black/White 2, Ace Attorney 5, Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, Style Savvy: Trendsetters (lol I know, but I enjoyed the previous game, seriously). && I'm sure that list will grow in a few months. The 3DS really isn't a bad portable system. I guess I can be a "casual gamer" at times, but I really do like the nice range of genres in their video game library.

In regards to Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward - I honestly did not enjoy playing the demo on the PSVita. It was very... tedious, I can say. When you play the game, you have the constantly move the camera angle around using the touchscreen && it wasn't a fluid, consistent motion. I had to repeatedly swipe at the screen for my motion to be registered. Which is annoying, y'know? Honestly, I'm not sure if I could've used the analogue sticks instead, but that's besides the point.

After playing the first game on the DS I felt that the PSVita was too clunky and huge in comparison. >D Like it takes me more effort just to scroll through the sequences... Maybe I'm being nitpicky, idk. I originally assumed that I would get the game for the PSVita (since my Vita needs love, lol), but after trying out the demo, I wasn't too pleased && I'm actually considering getting it for the 3DS instead (the "less powerful" portable, lol). Based on the controls, really. I just want some new PSVita games! Is that too much to ask for?

Good luck choosing~ Be sure to post your final decision, as I'm actually a bit curious to see what you choose! :3

I think I have my decision. The PS Vita!!!!!!!!! :griin:

Well, and I do second an above mentioned suggestion. I'll hold off buying it for the time being. I don't think Zero Escape is released here yet anyway, and as fun as I think it is, I don't think it commands a large enough fan base that would sweep up all existing stocks. Maybe waiting might even help me snag those at lower prices. But either way, I'm going to wait this one out. The cost is also another issue; it happened with the PSP Slim when I bought it. Wait it out till I forgot about it, decide to buy it and get it at half price, with all accessories (casing included), and 10 free games. Then there's also the library of games. Currently, I realize after looking through the available games, the Vita has a really miserable amount of games at the moment.

These aside, another reason is the existence of NDS emulators. That was how I played Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, all the Phoenix Wrights, some Pokemon.. Well, I'm sure the PSP has an emulator as well, just a matter of finding... But the point is, backwards compatibility is not a factor I consider. Also of interest is the custom firmwares available for both devices. This is one of the biggest reasons I'm going for the Vita.

I love custom firmwares :megusta2:

Then there's also the comparison of hardware specifications. I must admit, I really don't think the 3D effects are that spectacular. I mean, yes, its amazing. No glasses needed, cool. But no. I'm not fazed. And I also prefer the bigger screen on the Vita as well. Apparently, that bigger screen packs the ability to process more....... um. image stuff... Basically, all I discovered about that was. Vita screen > 3DS screen. There's also that touch-sensitive back that intrigues me somewhat. I don't actually have a feel of it at the moment, but I think that might add another level of difficulty to the game.

I was a little biased, I have to admit, having had the PSP Slim before and all. I'm also not very interested in playing Pokemon or Mario at all, so Nintendo just doesn't pique that much of an interest. I also tend to think Nintendo as more geared towards the 'kiddy' crowd as well. That and my biggest impression of portable console gaming had been made by the PSP in games like Peace Walker... Persona 3 Portable... Crisis Core... Monster Hunter... When I saw that the NDS didn't have as many to compare, I don't think I can really expect a lot of difference from the 3DS.

Granted, they may have Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance for now, though even that, I believe, will be ported to the PS Vita at some point. I'm not sure if there're any confirmed news for this one. Haven't looked through the Square Enix News forum yet. But yeah. That's how I came to the decision.

It sounds like you made a pretty good decision for yourself! :3 It's not a bad idea to wait it out for awhile until there's a price drop && hopefully more games to play for the PS Vita. :p I never really considered if KH: DDD would get ported for the Vita, but that'd be a good move for Square Enix I think! :D The Vita is definitely better than the 3DS specs-wise, but I guess I'm a bit of a sucker for those "kiddie" not-so-hardcore 3DS games! xp They're really fun though!
