Ah yeds, mmm aha.
My pee ess three hard drive thing has run out of space.
Does anyone know what I should do now?
Are you supposed to replace it etc etc.

Delete some saved games/music/etc that you don't use anymore?

I know you can plug in a USB stick or external harddrive through the controller ports and store saved game data on that. Not sure about an external HD for PS3 only or memory expansions, though...

Mine ran out of space when mortal kombat forced me to download the game onto my HD. I ended up having to delete things like old save files to games I don't play any more or game files I DL'd onto the HD.

Doing that is very annoying though! I think if you really wanted you could buy a bigger ps3 hard drive and replace your old one with it but that might be expensive.

If you've already had your PS3 for more than a year and it's one of the first that came out and your warranty has run out. You could change the hard drive to a higher one I did this 2 years after owning mine, I now own a 500gb hard drive. Works like a charm. You just need tiny screwdrivers and a new HD.

That..kinda

If your ps3 is still under warranty though and you remove the hardrive its instantly voided. Youv had yours for a while anyway havent you?
I would just delete old game data. Your bound to have games on there your not gunna play again or at least not play for a long time. Delete them to free up some space.

I've been deleting game data for a while now and I've reached the point where I don't think I can delete anymore because I play most of the games that I have save data left for.
The warranty would have expired ages ago. So it's best to buy a new hard drive?
Any particular type?

Your best choice is to buy to an external HDD. Some aren't that expensive either, If you got a BestBuy near you, I think they sell 1TB External HDD's for like 70-80 USD.

Does upgrading your own HDD actually violate the terms now? It was originally encouraged by Sony to the extent that there were instructions on the official Sony website as to how one could do it.

Hal, for a cheaper solution just buy yourself a new internal HDD (I think it must be 2.5"...although the measurments may be different given I'm American). External harddrives are not a good solution as most games are copy locked. Meaning you can not save some games to your external, making it a short term solution at best.

Of course, PS+ offers a tiny bit of space for online storage as well. Not the best choice, but it violates nothing, and you can save everything there.

Buy an external HDD. they're relatively cheap, you don't have to open up your Peepee Ess Threetee, and they're portable.

First of all, changing the hard drive does not void your warranty.

Second, you cannot install game data to an external drive, so that wouldn't solve the problem at all. The only thing the external drive can do is saved data, which are KB and hardly take up any room at all on your PS3.

I upgraded my hard drive recently, and it's a fairly painless process.

Step 1
Back up your entire hard drive on an external hard drive.

Step 2
Sync Trophies.

Step 3
Open up the PS3 hard drive slot (It's on the bottom on the slim design, and on the side/front of the original fat system).

Step 4
Unscrew the hard drive, take it out, and screw the new one in.

Step 5
Put it back in.

Step 6
Turn it on and transfer your data from the external hard drive.

Step 7
Sync Trophies (Keep in mind that the first time you play a game you have already earned trophies for, you have to get to the start screen, quit out, resync trophies, then you're good to go.)

Step 8
You're finished.

It's really simple and only takes about 10 minutes to do, though backing up the hard drive takes a LOOONG time. But the actual physical stuff is simple and you only need a small screwdriver and a steady hand.

Here's the hard drive I used:

There you go. Have any questions or concerns, just send me a PM. I can walk you through it if you need me to, though I'm sure there are plenty of youtube videos showing exactly how to do it.

It's good to hear that they actually have NOT added in that it voids the warranty. I did it myself ages ago, and Sony encouraged me to do it. I'd be pissed if doing something they helped me do voided my shit. :rage:

Something you may want to know with the HDD, though, is be careful when unscrewing it from the metal caddy holding it within the PS3. If you strip the screws...well...just be carefull getting them out.

I guess you'd also need a rather large external hard drive to back up all the stuff on?

At least the size of your hard drive. You could back up each save individually, but the problem with that is some developers have made their save data system specific, so you'd lose those saves. Resident Evil 5 is an example of a game that does this. If you don't care about those saves, then by all means you could use a small jump drive to back up your save data. Though, you'll need a second jump drive to put the eboot data from the playstation website on.
