After Black Friday I visited a few Best Buys and other stores around where I live. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, huge shopping day. I haven't had luck getting the Guitar Hero III for the Xbox 360 but I have noticed something... In three of the Best Buys I've been to there has been a HUGE stack of PS3. About 16+ PS3 all stacked together. Yet...there aren't any Wii's and only very few Xbox 360s left. (The Xbox systems that were left was the ones with Master Chef.) While checking other electronic stores and department stores for Guitar Hero, I've notice they're full with PS3's as well. Has anyone noticed this?

According to Wikipedia the PS3 has sold 5.59 million copies as of September 30, 07. The Wii - 13.17 Million copies. Xbox 360 - 13.4 copies. (World wide sales by the way.)

So far the only best exclusives for the PS3 is FFXIII and Metal Gear Solid 4. Most of the PS3 games are non-exclusive as well. Folklore got medium ratings, 74 according to Metacritic.

My question is....What do you think about PS3 outcome in the future? Is it really worth paying hundreds of dollars for the system? Do you think Sony will drop the price again? Do you think the PS3 will keep loosing exclusive contracts?

Heh, no surprise there.

I was reading...in GameInformer I think it was...about Sony's decision to do the price drop on the 40gig version. Some exec was saying how they had to take the backwards compatibility out to make it cheaper, but fans understood it and would prefer a cheaper one with no backwards compatibility.

Well, from a gamer's standpoint, backwards compatibility means ALOT to me. Especially since I don't have alot of room to keep multiple consoles. Sooo...Sony are idiots.

Well where i live (Canada) its really only 100$ difference between a Xbox 360 (Arcade) and a PS3 40Gb with Spiderman 3 blueray. Now ive heard alot about the Xbox seeing as my friend wont stop bugging me about getting one and ive also had one before i sold it for a laptop because NO ONE was on splinter cell online xD. Anyways I definitly think that PS3 is going to have a better outcome then Xbox in the upcoming years. Much more games are giong to come out very soon and i have a feeling there going to be good. Im getting a PS3 myself and i cant wait to get it. Xbox has pretty much the same games as the PS3 other then a few (Halo3, BioShock, Gears of War to name a few) and those were amazing games but i think that PS3 are soon to come out with games that are better... Thats my opinion anyways :monster:

Oh what?! Seriously they took out the backwards compatibility? You've got to be kidding me for that was the one feature that I was looking forward to when I finally got the dumb console. It's only $399 where I live by the way, which is way cheaper than when we got the 360 about 8 months ago, which was about 500.

Yes, I have noticed a lot of stores are well stocked in PS3's and very poorly stocked when it comes to the Wii and XBox 360 consoles.

Meh, it's really hard to say as the system has only been out for a year. However, I think the number of units sold will significantly increase as time goes on and more popular games are released for it. ...I hope. :(

Is it really worth paying hundreds of dollars for the system? Do you think Sony will drop the price again?

No. I never thought it was worth the amount of money they were asking for it, especially when it was first released a year ago. ...Still, $400 for a console that's not backwards compatible is still pretty steep, in my opinion.

I do think they'll drop the price again though. I wouldn't be surprised to see em' below $350 - $300 in a little over a years time.

Do you think the PS3 will keep loosing exclusive contracts?

This is were I think Sony lost big time! As we all know in the past they were the muscle in the gaming industry with the most exclusivity in the gaming industry. Personally, i don't think they anticipated the loss in exclusive game contracts.

Either way, I think it was poor planning and pretty self destructive on the part of Sony exec's with the design of an expensive gaming console and little to no exclusivity on most of the major gaming software designers, especially with everything pretty much going cross platform.

Yeah, no joke. You gotta get an 80 gig for that now.

It's idiotic. Even if I did have that kinda money, I wouldn't buy a console that couldn't play my older games.

It's because it's so expensive to develop on the PS3. It may be the best piece of hardware out there, but if most developers can't even afford making games for it you're screwed. Plus higher tech games only drives the price up, and there's only so much we gamers can afford. I'd lawl if the PS3 went the way of the Dreamcast, and they will if they don't wise up and stop insulting their customers.

I do belive, that the PS3 will drop in price after Christmas (prob by Aus $100) and thats pretty decent, seeing as they are a bit above reasonable price now

I have to say that I'm not suprised at their lack of sales. Lately Sony have been having problems when it comes to their "new" ideas. Look at the Mini Disc....it flopped. Then there was the UMD films.....that flopped. And what I'm seeing with the Blueray, deciding to only use a media that is expensive to produce may be the achilles heel for the PS3. And another thing which annoys me (I'm from UK) is the lack of BC. I still want a PS3 but Sony's not making it easier on themselves with their decisions. And I agree with the total lack of exclusive titles.

We do get backward-compatibility in the 60G models, it just relies on the library being updated along with the firmware....

Still, I'm getting more heartened as time goes on. Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted and Folklore ( yes, I like repetitive gaming ) all actually have me wanting to buy them, something I couldn't forsee happening before the launch of the next-gen. With games like Disgaea 3, White Knight Story and MGS4 'round the corner, it looks as though the monolith will eventually pick up the pace.

Aye, Sony really isn't doing themselves any favors going for the best stuff. They may be the best as far as tech goes, but they fail to realize that it'll make it more expensive to produce, thus making the costs for consumers exorbitant.

The 60 GB version is being discontinued though :monster:

Ratchet and Clank Future and Metal Gear 4 are the only games I have any interest in. It's likely that Sony will be getting more good games than just those in the future, but as I said in a previous post, the reason they're losing so many third party developers is that it just costs too much to develop for the PS3. If they don't figure out a way to cheapen costs or compensate developers, they're still going to be screwed.

I'm aware that the BC is now done similar to the 360 in that it requires downloads....but why was it changed to this? The original PS3s don't need any such downloads. I should have rephrased that a bit. I can accept that method for the 360 as it's never had a BC system before but PS3? A PS2 didn't need any downloading to play PS1 games. And as I said, the first PS3 don't need any downloading. It just annoys me that they screw up this "feature"...which isn't a feature any more with the PS3 as it's not built-in.

I'm a huge fan of the Playstation but this is just irritating me. I can understand why the Wii is the better selling console of the three, it's the cheapest and the BC with GC is perfect......and it has downloadable games from other consoles.

I think when the price drops, PS3s will get more popular. But with the extortionate price they are now, the low sales figures don't surprise me...It's a rip off....but i am getting one for xmas, and i aint complaining bout that. The tech is amazing :ninja:

The only way PS3 can recover is a system with a price as cheap or cheaper than the competitors, WITHOUT cutting out components.

I'm sorry, but I think paying for a new Playstation should allow me to play PS2 and PS1 games still... And as you said, not very many games exclusive to the system that are worth getting...

Until the prices drop with the backwards-compatibility put back in, I plan on getting the XBOX 360.

I foresaw the Playstion and the Sony company taking over this generation of gaming before any of the systems were released, but now I'm going to have to say that if they even want 2nd place, they are going to have to pull off a big-time turn-around!

The Xbox 360 probably offers the most of any console right now with it's online capabilities, early start on launch date, awesome library of games already released and still to come. My personal favorite to win this generation's console war.

The Wii is a fan-favorite with so many old-timer gamers with the throwback downloads, Mario-craze fanboys, and the overall fun-factor built into the system, the Wii-mote, and the old-school feel of it.

Probable 7th Generation Console War Results:

1. Microsoft Xbox 360
2. Nintendo Wii
3. Sony Playstation 3

What's amazing is how Sony could have dropped so far so fast after one of the best performances ever with the Playstation 2 during the 6th generation.

I think that's where Sony got cocky. They figured, 'hey, we were a favorite last generation, which instantly means all the people who bought PS2's will buy PS3's no matter how slow we make games, how expensive we make the system, or what we cut out in lower-priced versions'.

And, of course, that thought has backfired.

One of the major factors at why Sony are falling behind Nintendo and Microsoft is that they didn't have the luxury of having a full year and a half without a decent competitor (I love SEGA but the Saturn/Dreamcast didn't stand a chance), this generation is much more on a level footing with the 360 having the benefits of being out longer while the cheaper Wii appeals to markets that right now the PS3 either doesn't or is too expensive to justify buying.

And of course some shite ads, general bad press and overconfidence in the PlayStation brand have played there part as well. Just to give an idea of how bad it's been, the PS3 recently passed the 6 million WW mark which Sony expected to pass in March 9 months ago.

However I won't count Sony out after only a year considering it's doing about as well as the 360 in the same time, like the 360 in a couple of years we'll probably see more games that would actually justify getting the console and of course it'll be cheaper and possibly it'll have backwards compatibility (crazy I know). That's why I'm basically waiting for a good few years before considering getting one anyway.

The only games for the PS3 that interest me (MGS4 and FFXIII) have yet to be released. Which is why I'm not gonna even bother with the PS3 until they come out. The same goes for the Wii. It's the cheapest of all three consoles but it doesn't have any games that interest me (when a new Zelda comes out that'll change.) I think the Xbox 360 appeals to me with games like Mass Effect but I have so many games on the PS2 that I wanna try out that I want to get that out of the way first (and save money for when the Wii and PS3 have titles that I want to purchase.) Another thing that prevents me from getting a current gen console is the handheld gaming. With the new versions of the early FF's coming out for the PSP and Phantom Hourglass for the DS, it's a lot of money to spend. So I have to weight my decision carefully.

Wow...some of these are news to me. I don't really keep up with PS3 since I know I wouldn't bother with the console for at least a year or so more.

Honestly, I don't even know if it's even worth it anymore. The only games I'll play are RPG and maybe some Adventure games, but so far, I'm only really looking forward to FFXIII and Kingdom Hearts 3. That's it. I don't see any other games that interests me. Is it worth it? Hell no it's not, but my stupid stubborn side is really pushing me to get one later down the road anyway.

And I will, eventually...I just hope that by then, there would be more RPG games, especially Final Fantasy. Yes, I'm hoping that there would be at least 3 to 4 Final Fantasy games made for the PS3 before they release PS4...

Meh, imagine if PS4 comes out...

Heck, they might not even be one if Sony keeps this nonsense up...

Wii's Virtual Console is a huge plus. Sure, I can dl ROMs of old games anytime I want, but I'd much rather play them on a TV with a controller than on a keyboard. Also, it might actually turn out a huge profit for them. Nostalgia is all the rage these days, and people who grew up in the 80's and 90's don't just wanna relive their favorite shows, they wanna relive their favorite games too.

I'm sorry, but I think paying for a new Playstation should allow me to play PS2 and PS1 games still... And as you said, not very many games exclusive to the system that are worth getting...

Exactly. There's probably alot of games in the PS2's massive library people have yet to play, and given the pathetic current library on the PS3, there's really no reason to upgrade. Why buy a $400 - $500 system with $60 games when there's so many awesome $20 - $30 games you can play on a current $130 console that you probably already have?

And of course some shite ads, general bad press and overconfidence in the PlayStation brand have played there part as well. Just to give an idea of how bad it's been, the PS3 recently passed the 6 million WW mark which Sony expected to pass in March 9 months ago.

Oh christ, you had to remind me of the ads >_< The Wii's ads are corny, but at least have something to do with the console. The PS3's commercials are like a bad acid trip. I sure wouldn't wanna buy a PS3 after seeing the commercials, I'd just be going "wtfh was that?"

I don't have faith in KH anymore. They're starting to whore it out as much as Final Fantasy, and they'll probably only make the plot even more confusing. Methinks it'll turn into another series that's good but is never anything great.

The 60 GB version is being discontinued though
I have to say that I was unaware of this, and I know a lot of people personally that are likely to be put off by the thought of it not having any backward compatibility. It'll be interesting to see if Sony can really pull it back, it'll take some pretty special games to do so. I had actually forgotten that Tekken is still likely to be Sony exclusive ( if I remember rightly the arcade board being used is similair in some ways to the Cell structure ), so I know I've made the choice that's more likely to appeal to me.
