Playstation 3 situation

I have to say that I was unaware of this, and I know a lot of people personally that are likely to be put off by the thought of it not having any backward compatibility. It'll be interesting to see if Sony can really pull it back, it'll take some pretty special games to do so. I had actually forgotten that Tekken is still likely to be Sony exclusive ( if I remember rightly the arcade board being used is similair in some ways to the Cell structure ), so I know I've made the choice that's more likely to appeal to me.

Yep. I'm not sure if they're discontinuing the 60 gig everywhere, or just in the US, but either way it's a bad move. I don't know what's going on in Sony's minds. Why leave such a massive gap between 40 and 80 gigs? Some people may want more than 40 but don't need an 80...and cutting compatibility is stupid too, of course.

As for Tekken, well, I prefer the Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive series...so no PS3 for me yet. And just Ratchet and Clank and Metal Gear aren't enough to convince me to spend $400+ on the system.

Heh, no surprise there.

I was reading...in GameInformer I think it was...about Sony's decision to do the price drop on the 40gig version. Some exec was saying how they had to take the backwards compatibility out to make it cheaper, but fans understood it and would prefer a cheaper one with no backwards compatibility.

Well, from a gamer's standpoint, backwards compatibility means ALOT to me. Especially since I don't have alot of room to keep multiple consoles. Sooo...Sony are idiots.

That really annoyed me when I found that out, especially as my PS2 is on its way out (I should stop standing on it really) But surely it would save people monmey in the long run if itWAS backwards compatible. I am so not looking forward to buying a PS3 then my PS2 conks....before I found out about the compatibility thing I was looking forward to my PS2 dying so I had an excuse to go buy a PS3....now Im just waiting for the epic tantrum I'l have when it eventually DOES die.....

Incidentally I will end up buying one as I only got my playstations for the Final Fantasies anyway, I just got into afew other games along the way so the lack of exclusive titles isn't really an issue to me

Feh, Sony doesn't care if it saves you money, they want to save themselves money and then charge us insane amounts. They say they're only doing it so they can sell it cheaper...but I don't trust them anymore. After all, they said they couldn't make a motion-sensing controller with dual shock intact, but lo and behold they decided they can! Moreover, Pelican made a controller back for the PSone that was motion-sensing and had dual shock. So yeah, I don't trust anything Sony says now.

I don't have any faith in the Final Fantasy series anymore, the only games I trust to not have failed storylines and generic, moody anime characters are the remakes, so I'd rather get a DS or PSP.

Ugh you're really making me question whether I want one or not.... I wasn't overly impressed with FFXII & I just know if I got a PS3 for XIII and i hated it, I'd end up throwing it out the window and screaming

I guess I'l just wait and see what people say about XIII before I commit to spending all my pennies on a PS3....

See, i'm really pissed off about the whole 60 / 40 GB thing. I don't know which one my mothers got me for christmas, and she delights in telling me the 60GB ones are nowhere to be seen, which would suck because i have a shitload of PS2 and PS1 games i enjoy replaying =/ and if my PS2 craps out i'm buggered. Although, i've also heard rumours that the 60GB ones are prone to breaking - overheating and stuff, so i'm starting to worry about whether or not the PS3 is worth it or not =/

The 60gb versions are prone to overheating? Well if that's the case then there really is little difference between it and the 360 as MANY people complained of that overheating. Lucky for me, my 360 is over a year old and still working fine. To be honest, I wouldn't be suprised if they were overheating as I remember Sony having problems with their previous machines and they were with early models too.

I still want one though.

I'm going through the current compatability list and so far the only games that don't play perfectly (either with minor issues or noticeable issues) is Devil May Cry (the don't even have DMC2 as compatable at all!), Dragon Quest, God Of War (GOD2 isn't on list), Gran Turismo 3 & 4, GTA San Andreas, GTA Vice City, MGS3, Onimusha 3, Shadow Hearts, Silent Hill 2 & 4, around half of the Singstar games & Ultimate Spiderman.
Other games that I have that aren't listed at all (so means not BC yet or at all) include Guitar Hero, Kingdom Hearts 2, Onimusha 1 & 2, Silent Hill 3 & Simpsons Hit & Run.

That's just the PS2 list. Use the link below to compare your own games. It's for Europe so only Europeans should check the link.

Smart idea. I have no hope for XIII. It's going to be a DBZ ripoff, just generic anime characters running around in an action RPG with aerial goodness ala Advent Children.

Say what? DMC, God of War, Gran Turismo, Onimusha 3...and even MGS3 aren't compatible? O_O I wonder if it's that dismal in the US...

No no.....the first list is of games that play but have problems. This includes DMC1, GOW, GT3 & 4, and Onimusha 3. The second list is of games that aren't compatable at all but "may" be playable in the future. That means that yes, at the moment MGS3 isn't playable on PS3 in Europe. At least I assume so as the list was made after MGS3 was released. To be honest, it's pretty sad for both us Euro gamers AND Sony as games like these are the major sellers. To either have them available with problems or not at all is ridiculous.

Oooh, my bad then, I read your post wrong >_< But yeah...like you said, whether they just have problems or aren't compatible at all is a huge deal. Sony really ought to be more concerned about that issue...backwards compatibility doesn't mean crap if some of the PS2's greats won't play without problems.
