Do people really think FFVII is the best RPG? Because you see there was a game made called Legend of Dragoon that owned face. IMO the characters are much more interesting and in depth than VII. The main character Dart is much more deep and not as boring as Cloud. There isnt a char in LOTD I can honestly say that I hate or didnt find an interest in, and theres a thing called Additions and if you suck at those you will suck through the game. It requires not only more skill for the player to have, but patience as well in leveling not only your additions but your character as well. And on this the final boss was actually HARD and DIFFICULT unlike Sephiroth whom all you have to do is mime 1 attack and he's toast. Lol and you dont even have to mime KOTR you can beat him straight up without that summon. On LOTD you actually have to think strategy on what to use against bosses, who to use in your party, when to use your Dragoon. You cant just line up and say, "Oh I'll use KOTR against this boss and own him." No no you cant do that, a majority of the bosses are actually hard and difficult and not cake walks like on VII. Off the top of my head the hardest bosses in VII are Carry Armor and Demon Wall imo, thats it. The game FFVII really proposed no challenge for me what so ever. I mean come on, if anybody says theres a boss on FFVII thats tougher than Melbu Frama on LOTD is kidding themselves.
Now I'm not saying FFVII is a terrible game, I love playing it and lvling my character. But I just hate when people brand this the "Best RPG ever" or "The best Final Fantasy Ever", because really its not the best of either of those 2 categories.
So now I ask all of you gamers out there, is it the best rpg?
Thoughts? Let the debate begin

You don't have to Legend of Dragoon or anything else, FFVII isn't the best RPG game that for sure but it's one of the best, you see there might be other games that will show up that can PWN every RPG game, I myself like FFVII, I also like Star Ocean and many other games, and FF7 isn't my best RPG game.

Having played only FFVII from the games you mention I ca't give you a complete answer.
I like FFVII most in the FF series,it also depends on your tastes whether you'll like it or not. Many FF fans dislike FFVII in fact.I'd put it that FFVII is "One of the best RPGs" out there, but it's because of the sales that it has conquered the name of "The Best RPG" or something like that.In my opinio aother RPG that could equal FFVII is Shadow Hearts or Shadow Hearts:Covenant. It is very unique compaired to other RPG games, the story, the atmosphere, the characters and the gameplay but it is not very known actually. As I said that's only my opinion because I'm a big fan of the SH series.

That's just people with no experience. The same happens with Naruto or Bleach.
"Naruto ROkz".Without having seen any other anime.

Yeah I mean I can see ppl saying it's "1 of the best" but I hate when ppl label it "The Best Ever".
People are allowed opinions are they not?
I love the Beatles and Led Zeppelin and have said on numerous occasions that they are the best ever.
Taste in music as in games is subjective, so neither you or people saying FFVII is the GOAT are wrong.
Personally I don't think FFVII is the best, I prefer VIII.

There is the obvious comment that since no one has played every game that they cannot say one is the best. However such a cliched response is almost not worth mentioning.

I actually prefer FFIV and VI to VII. I think those two are both number one ranking in the "best RPG" category. That and Valkyrie Profile. That's my opinion, though.

Opinion to the best anything is always subjective. It just seems that many share the opinion that FF7 is the best. Much like, as Placebo said, many feel that The Beatles/Led Zeppelin are the best bands ever. It holds true for many people, but it's not like it's a universally known fact. Alot love it, some not so much.

Personally I thought the gameplay of FF7 was a little weak, and it presented few challenges. The only parts I found remotely difficult were the Ancient Forest, and the optional WEAPON fights. Legend of Dragoon was much better in terms of gameplay IMO, but I have to disagree as I think the characters and story were piss poor - and in the end, with RPGs, it's the characters and story I really remember most.

On that note, I don't really have a favourite anything. My favourites tend to waver based on my mood. 'Cuz I'm not consistent like that.

In terms of game-play, story-line and characters, I do think that FFVII is the best RPG ever made. The Materia system was excellent. The way you could combine different types of Materia to create your own unique devastating spells was brilliant. I still think that the Materia system has yet to be bettered. Also, the story-line was gripping, right until the very end of the game, and the characters are by far the best in any RPG. All conspired, I’d say yes, FFVII is the best RPG ever made, closely followed by FFX and FFVIII.

I don't think FFVII was the best RPG ever. Most game I had played always has it's flaws where there could be room for improvement. To me, no game is consider the "best" because that would be just silly. It makes you think the game is 100% perfect.

Since the FFVII was released in 1997, I am 11 years into the gaming world of PS3 (and PS2 still) games where PS1 games aren't of any interest to me anymore. I find myself swaying more toward beat 'em games and away from RPG genre games these days. I just find RPGs a bit boring to play after awhile. Besides all my Final Fantasy games are most likely just collecting dust in my room anyways.

I think what it all comes down to is how much enjoyment you get out of a game. Final Fantasy VII may not be the best in terms of graphics/gameplay, and some people will even argue storyline, but it provides hours of fun nontheless. If you really, really like something, you're bound to say "Oh, it's the best ever!" even if in all honesty it isn't. I think everyone will agree that VII is a very entertaining game, which is why so many people like it, yet when you compare it to other games it seems weak and "The best RPG" sounds like an over-statement. Tons of people extremely enjoyed VII, flaws and all, so I think that's why it is given the title of best even today.

That's just me though >_>

I sincerely think ff7 is the best rpg ever created because it did set the bar high enough to every rpg game in the world even up to this date still you hear people talking about the storylines specially the full story and the characters like sephiroth etc.

That's just people with no experience. The same happens with Naruto or Bleach.
"Naruto ROkz".Without having seen any other anime.

That sounds like my brother. xD

Anyway it's just like the others said, people with no experience will probably find FFVII the best RPG game, I like FFVII but I also like FFIV and I think if it has a better story to FF story, it's like what Oremuse said just like anime people seeing Naruto and Bleach for the first time may go "WOOH!, it's freaking awesome" but they haven't seen many "Awesome" anime like Death Note, Code Geass, Gintama (xD) . . . etc.

E
ven compared to many recent RPG’s (like Lost Odyssey, Oblivion and Dark Chronicle) FFVII is still the more polished game. Newer RPG’s might be more graphically sophisticated, but they lack the engrossing playability of FFVII. FFVII’s game-play, even to this day, shames many current generation games. In my opinion, nothing compares to FFVII’s addictive turn-based style game-play and nothing probably ever will. As for the story, well it’s initially bewildering trying to figure out what the hell is going on at first (and Cloud’s false memories make trying to understand the story even more difficult), but once you understand the story you begin to realise the incredible depth of the game. It may be a bit long in the tooth now, but for a world you actually cared about, and a cast of characters you’ll probably never forget, FFVII is still the best RPG (game) ever made.

Meh..
I personally feel it's illogical to believe that a game made in 1997 can hold up to game made in 2016 I think the general consensus finds it illogical as well. So how can someone say something is the best ever, therefore meaning nothing will ever be better? They can't really bet there life on that because that's pretty much impossible based on the rate that technology grows. So maybe if someone reasonable were to say that FF7 is the best RPG ever, the underlying meaning is that this game is the best RPG in its generation of RPG's. Obviously i can't say for sure that whats what they mean, I'm just saying it's not to intelligent to say otherwise. So anyways my personal opinion is that when it came out nothing in a three year radius could touch it, not even Legend of the dragoon, which i agree is a fantastic game but not on FF7's level. You can't say that the difficulty difference makes a game better unless ff7 was so easy a 2 year old can pick up and finish it. The additions i admit was a neat idea that i enjoyed and made learning a new one better than learning a new limit break but it doesn't make the gameplay better because where LOTD focused it gameplay on timing FF7 focused the gameplay on strategy moreso by giving you a huge library of spells that can be mixed and match to create combo and give everyone a unique way of playing so to speak. However where I think FF7 excels is in the story. FF7's story you have to admit was really good, whereas LOTD wasn't bad, it was just cliche. Where haven't you seen a rpg that has destined heroes transform into a being from histories past. Case in point LOTD. Anyways sorry for rampling. FF7 Great for its time? Yes. Best ever? No.

I thought VII was pretty over-rated. After all, it appears to me people regarded it as the best mainly because of Cloud and Sephiroth. Sure they do look handsome and all, but I thought there are games out there that are better than VII.

It's all a matter of people's personal opinion. Any game can be the best to whoever. Everyone's got their favorites, and everyone's got that game they consider the best.

I'm not going to say that FFVII IS or IS NOT the best. It's not for me to decide. It's a great game. It was a huge shift in fan-base for a good video game franchise and turned it into a Great one.

If someone says it's the 'best', cool. I'm not going to sweat it because someone likes it so much they consider it the greatest of all-time; good for them. I'm sure many people will argue with me that the game I consider the best of all-time, isn't.

To me its all opinion, some people say that final fantasy VII is the best rpg and some do not. I personally think that it is not the best rpg it was just a game that stood out and did a lot of things right. You can't say that it outshines another rpg because every game stands out in its own way. Bottom line its a good rpg not the best

I like the game, but it is not "the best". I agree with Zack about Legend of Dragoon. It takes some serious strategy to beat some of those bosses because they are not easy. On my "best RPG" list, FFVII is near the bottom only because I like alot of RPGs.

FFVII was easilly the best FF (followed by FFIX).

The gameplay and storyline were and still are AMAZING. Really in depth, but it's interesting and links up perfectly.

I don't care what anyone says, the newer FF's have weaker storylines, my main example being FFXII. The story was non-existant, it was just a HUGE game.

FFVII had AMAZING graphics back in the day. They look OK today, but it annoys me when people say the graphics aren't good. They were in the day and it has aged quite well if you ask me.

Of course since FFVII is regarded as the best FF, people will claim to hate it or not like it and they've never played it, never completed it etc. People love to go against the grain. Obviously some people wont like it because they just don't, e.g i dont like Halo, but there aren't THAT MANY games that in 10+ years time will get the amount of praise FFVII will.

Just appreciate FFVII for what it is. A landmark title and probably one of the greatest stories ever told in a videogame.

That sounds like my brother. xD

Anyway it's just like the others said, people with no experience will probably find FFVII the best RPG game, I like FFVII but I also like FFIV and I think if it has a better story to FF story, it's like what Oremuse said just like anime people seeing Naruto and Bleach for the first time may go "WOOH!, it's freaking awesome" but they haven't seen many "Awesome" anime like Death Note, Code Geass, Gintama (xD) . . . etc.

......

Absolutely untrue and you're just guessing that people will say FFVII is the best RPG because they've not played any RPG's before.

I have probably played more RPG's than anyone on this whole website and i STILL think FFVII is the best, storyline-wise and gameplay-wise. So you'd be wrong to think i haven't played many RPG's?

Any FF before FFVII cannot possibly have a better story, or, to phrase it right, it cannot have a more in-depth story. Sure, you might say, it doesn't have to be an in-depth story to be good, but if you like more simple storylines then maybe.

I've read/seen the interview with Square staff (before they became Square Enix) and they said FFVII was by far the most complex story thus far and their ''proudest'' piece of work. I've also seen an interview (i THINK it was on the bonus disk of Advent Children) and it says that most Square Enix staff regard FFVII as the best RPG ever made and many of them are fans of it. (You may have seen it yourself).

And by all means have an opinion i'm not getting at you, i just think you are wrong to stereotype everyone who thinks of FFVII as the best RPG as an RPG NOOB.

And for the record, in order of my Fav FF's it's;

1) FFVII
2) FFIX
3) FFVIII
4) FFVI
5) FF1
6) FF2
7) FF5
8) FF4
9) FF3
10) FFX
11) FFXI
12) FFXII

(not including chocobo games etc just from the main series). And yes, FFX is near the bottom of the list. It was BORING gameplay wise. I have played many better RPG's e.g Legend Of Dragoon, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Warrior 7, Skies of Arcadia, Suikoden II, Star Ocean, Xenogears, Alundra... need i go on?

I'm an RPG fan so i do have some background knowledge on this.
