Since there hasn't been any really good Final Fantasy games recently, I'm kind of missing that sense of epic adventure Final Fantasy gives me. I absolutely adore the feeling of the character development and the locations. Just the overall experience. I don't want to go back to the old Final Fantasy games I have yet to play, because I'm saving those for emergencies and when I have less games on the go. But for future reference, what are some epic RPG tales that may be overlooked by others that might give me the feeling of a GOOD Final Fantasy game? What are your favourites? I'm currently giving Xenosaga a try again due to its epic story that I need to experience (I didn't know how to play it last time I tried to play through it, so I failed...), and I'm definitely eyeing that recently announced Tales of Xillia localization.

Breath of fire 3! The breath of fire series is very good but start with number 3 .. I find it to be highly underrated. You have a good world map to explore and epic story and nice characters . Besides you have a thing called the dragon gene system where you can mix stones that you collect during the game to create various dragon forms.. I cannot stress more how awsome that game is.

Tales of Vesperia is really great, I recommend giving that one a go. And I heard good things about tales of grace F or whatever it's called.

The Tales series is well liked, and Tales of Symphonia (for the gamecube) sounds a little bit like Final Fantasy X! I've played the first couple of hours of ToS, so I can confirm that the battle system is pretty fun - the story sounds very promising. :) If you have a gamecube, check out Baten Kaitos!! :gasp: The battle system is very unique! :ryan: The characters and story is reasonably good - some of the characters remind me of those in FF games - and the world is beautiful!

If you have a PSP, try out Star Ocean: Second Evolution, which is absolutely fantastic so far. Tales of Eternia is also enjoyable, again with a decent battle system like in Tales of Symphonia and a good story.

I assume you have a PS2...:hmmm: You should also research Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. An absolutely fantastic battle system, good characters, a nice story, beautiful music, a gorgeous world (although you can only move from left to right, like in Rayman Origins) and some very FF-esque details. :)

Why would I start with Breath of Fire 3 and what's with Valkyrie Profile 2? Do I need to start with the first to get the story in order or are they very loosely connected like Final Fantasy games? D:

But for more info, I do have a GameCube, PSP, PS2, PS3 and of course a computer.

Well there are theories that connect the worlds of all Breath of fire games but they are merely fanfic.. Basically they are independant games like final fantasies and at best they are all from the same world with thousands of years of history setting them apart. BOF 3 is to me the best of the series and is also considered by many and I already said why in my OP. You should definately give it a try. It is available for the PSP and PS1! If you have custom firmware download it otherwise I think it is fairly cheap on ebay :D

Gabe Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 are loosely connected. :hmmm: The games basically tell the story of a different Valkyrie; the main character in VP1 is Lenneth, who appears briefly in VP2, but she isn't a main character. You needn't play VP1 before 2. ^_^ (I didn't!)

Valkyrie Profile certainly looks interesting. I usually only start game franchises from the beginning if it's required to fully grasp the story, but even though Valkyrie Profile 1 is required to be played, I checked out the PSP port of the first called Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and it looks fairly interesting. Not sure what I'll do about that, but I might look more into it.

Breath of Fire III looks like something I'd want if I was in the mood for a classic RPG sometime. That craving should come along eventually.

I'll write these down somewhere as a consideration. It's hard to tell if either of these will be my least favourite type of RPG: The chore/grindfest ones. You know, those games that feel overly long and stretched out more than they need to be just to pack in some grinding or fetch quests... (Final Fantasy XII)

You ever played Star ocean 4 (or Star Ocean: The Last Hope) A great PS3 RPG that you could quite easily pack in over 100 hours of play, and PS3 gets the International version with a extra dungon, Japanese dialog and A new Anime style Interface (Including redesigned Anime Portaits for all the characters)

Oh dont worry BOF 3 is not a grindfest game.. You can beat the game without grinding 1 . Atleast I did. The only minor thing I dislike about the game is the type of Final Fantasy 4 random encounter chance but it is still lower than FF4. Its a classic RPG but a unique one. The game is so amazing I complete it every summer. Its fairly short ..It can take up to 20 hours or 30 depending on the side content you do

I feel that you should give games like Persona 3/4 a go, I am like you OP. I miss the grand adventure of what a final fantasy brings to the table. My mate leant me Persona 3 and I am loving it at the moment. I would recommend 3 as the one to try and see if you like it. It is on PS2 or PSP depending which system you have.

If you have an Xbox 360 then Lost Odyssey would be a good mention as it is a wonderful JRPG from the original creator of Final Fantasy. It has a lovely story, a traditional FFX style battle system and it takes you on an emotional journey.

You could also try Star Ocean or recent Wii game The Last Story which is made by the Lost Odyssey crew.

I already finished Persona 3 Portable. It took me 1 year and 1 month to complete, and was sitting on my "games list" that you can see in my sig for that long amount of time. D: I thought it was pretty good, kinda wished I played the PS2 version instead, though. I already planned to give Persona 4 a go sometime.

If I get a Wii, the first games I'm grabbing are Xenoblade Chronicles and the Last Story. That was a plan LONG ago. I'll wait until I can buy a Wii for $29.99 or something, though.

Star Ocean is something I'm deeply considering. Kind of reminds me of Xenosaga (still progressing through Episode 1 of that series, loving it) I'm not sure of the Star Ocean series continues off of eachother, and is a series meant to be played in order... Can someone confirm that for me?
