Final Fantasy XV on PSP and DS? Not a chance, according to Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase.

The exec told Kotaku he sees the main series keeping to the home consoles for now and not doing a Dragon Quest by going to DS.

“In terms of Final Fantasy in general, the teams are really aiming for movie quality graphics and really dramatic storylines,” he said.

“For now, at least, consoles like the Xbox 360 and PS3 are the best place for this kind of cinematic experience to take place. We don’t feel that it needs to transition necessarily to a handheld platform.”

After the release of the eighth game on PS2, Dragon Quest IX appeared in Japan last summer on DS with the tenth game in the cannon series appearing on Wii.

In the same interview, FFXIII director Motomu Toriyama revealed the series will never become an FPS. Uh-huh.

Final Fantasy XIII lands in the west on March 9 for PS3 and 360.

Great there goes my hopes of 6 and 5 being redone for my portables. SE sure likes to crush hopes don't they?

I'm starting to dislike SE now, ah well time to get a GBA again and hunt those gba versions down I suppose.

I think they probably mean future games rather than remaking games :hmmm:

The only bad thing is that due to the DS/PSP's memory capacity there'd be a lot less depth in the games. Then again, if that's the case then FFXII would have been perfect on a handheld since that lacked pretty much...everything. On the other hand, the likes of Dragon Quest are on the DS and that's arguably better than Final Fantasy.

@Dean: I think the SNES remakes on hand held are still in the cards, just the new FF games from now on that won't come to hand-held. Spin-offs of "main FF games", maybe though...

@Mercurial: Haha, harsh. I don't agree with you though xD

I wouldn't have been surprised about them bring a series onto handheld, because right now the gaming market, both in Japan and the West, is focused on the hand helds. It's simply a far more outreaching audience, and only people like me who spent a butt load on a PS3 (or 360) would whine about not enough games coming on the console, let alone suddenly "downsizing" such a prevalent gaming series.

And who said anything about FF being an FPS thing? Yeah there was Dirge of Cerberus, but that was only so-so, and a whole lot of people trashed it anyways (I liked it myself, but still...), so I guess SE learned their lesson from that? xD

I never even imagined there being a main Final Fantasy title on a handheld console to be honest. I'm glad that's not happening to be honest. Plus, all the charging you'd need to do. A typical FF is around 100 hours, that doesn't seem to me like a great idea going on a portable console.

Remakes would be fine for me, because they've already done the game on a home console before they'd go and do that. As for future titles, the idea doesn't sit well with me.

ya if they did make a new ffh for a hand hel that would suck if it not some liek sequel or something like that because the main line need to always keep it statues as the best graphic and being the queen off all games of the time.

To be frank, I'm not surprised with it. I think the future games should remain on the home consoles in the first place. Making them available on anything else would cause some problems, such as the graphics and there may be limitations as to what each console can do.

I couldn't even imagine a newer fantasy on a handheld anyway, wouldnt it be like a ste back in terms of depth and shit?

Remaking older ones is fine and dandy, but not new main title games, that just seems abit daft imo

I don't know who brought this up to Kitase, but I certainly never imagined such an idea before. Nowadays the canon FF games require a lot of graphical capability and space to be able to have all those voiceovers, FMV cutscenes and content etc.

Any FF games that are set to appear on handhelds in the future will be either spinoffs (like Agito XIII), sequels (if they do a Revenant Wings again) or remakes (like the FFVI remake I so wish for).

Hasn't this been the norm? They are already on the home consoles. We already knew that they would stay on them. Glad that they clarified that up, though. Tbh, the games wouldn't seem right on Handhelds, only spin-offs and remakes should go on them. This news doesn't really affect me. It just shows that the creators know what they are doing (y)

Yeah, i've heard about this :hmmm: and as others said, I myself don't see the main FF titles on DS and whatnot anyways. Not to mention, if SE does graphics like they did in FXIII imagine how much space it would take (alot) and I don't think DS/etc would be able to hold all if anyways (as others above said)
I think this is very smart decision and i'm totally with SE on this.
Remakes and spinoffs though are on DS anyways, right?? So there isn't any problem with that.
Home consoles are the way to go :)
