Cunt!
I have to say first off that I would never take a job (unless I had no other choice) that would not cover (pay out for) the bare essentials: food, water, shelter. I would probably need internet, too, so TV is not a necessity. I'd need a cell phone. I'd also need to pay utilities and whatnot. And it's just me living with my cats, so I'd have them to worry about. I figure it's something around 2,000 a month to live the way I'm living at the moment. These are the factors I would consider first and foremost before going into the decision to take a job that I love (that doesn't necessarily pay out) or a job that makes more money.
In my case, the reality is that I've already pursued a job in education. At the moment, I am student teaching at a high school and I intend on looking for some kind of job after that within the field. I know for a fact that I can live on 30k a year, although it depends where I go (some places pay out 35k as a teacher, but I'm not terribly sure). So for me, I would rather take a job I loved, which will probably be teaching, rather than making more money just to have money.
I've found that money does not make you happy, although it can help you lead a more comfortable and materialistic life. It can ruin people, inside and out. I'm lucky to have a mom who's landed a wealthy husband who took care of us financially, but even with the money we have, there is still a lot of stress and probably even more so BECAUSE of the money. I won't get into any details, but I would honestly rather take a job I love and get paid less than to work a job I hate and get paid more.
