I think it is because there has to be a magnificent pull of the first game you play which satisfies you enough to want to start laying the other FF's. There must be lots of happy memories with the first game you play as it is the one that hooked you, presumably.
That said I don't belive it is entirely true. Since playing FFVII (my first) I have played most other FF's and my joint favourites are FFVI and FFVII, with FFIV and FFIX close behind.
So while not my ultimate favourite, at least not on its own, I still love it an awful lot. For me it isn't the fanboyism as I tend to like the things in FFVII that people seem to forget about, and I tend to prefer these things over the parts of FFVII that do get milked and hated by fans.
I just still feel that FFVII pulled off a fantastic blend of humour, dark story plots, fantasic music, great character design and had lots of awesome mini-games as well. I still feel FFVII was one of the best in achieving this.
You could argue that I still love FFVII because it was my first, and I'm sure there are some fond memories attatched to the first games of FF we play, but at least I know the reasons why I love FFVII and am not just following blind love.
