Pretty self explanitory really
Is the fact that we will all die eventually a good or bad thing?

Your views and thoughts on mortality?

Ooooh, nice. Very nice. I like this topic.

Okay, so the narcissist in me wants to say, "Hell no, bitch! I wanna live forever!"

Honestly though, I think it probably is a good thing. Can you imagine the sheer population problem the world would have if people didn't die? It would be catastrophic. Also, I know it's a total cliche, but think of how boring life would be if it continued forever. Everyone alive would suffer from severe cases of ennui. I also believe that it is because humans die that they are driven to create such amazing things. I truly believe that a good deal of art, literature, and architecture was created because humans die. Knowing that one day they will cease to be, people want to leave something amazing and memorable behind so the world does not forget them. If people were immortal, what would be the point to such things?

I definitely believe that it is a good thing. Yes, most humans fear death, but that is natural. I think the fact that we cannot hide from the inevitable is what gets to some people, and so the thought of being immortal can have its appeal, most definitely. Just think - the whole world to explore and actually have the time for it. To be with your loved ones for all eternity...

It is something that most people would want.

But...to go on living forever would probably lose its appeal someday and most of us would most likely become restless, as if seeking for something to satisfy one of our needs - which is ironically, to cease living and be devoid of human emotions (because sometimes, people do look for that release.) I know I'd feel that way, anyway. I honestly wouldn't know the point of my existence anymore...

To me, being mortal is a gift in its own unique way. It teaches us to be more appreciative of our surroundings and people who are important to us, knowing that someday we will die...and as the saying go, "make the best of everything." I think the fact that humans are only given such a short time on earth is something that is worth it...because we use that allocated short time to build our character, with "meaningful" thrown into the equation.

Yes, its balanced the more unbalances you have in a natural setting the quicker things will be destroyed.

Personally I would love to live forever and see how things would go but I really do believe that the fact we can die is the single greatest part of life.

While you live you experience both good and bad things. Finding love loosing friends etc. Some people say that the good things make life worth living but this is really only true in the short term as the more suffering in your life the more it has an effect on you. Happiness and sadness do not balance each other out.

Also things would get boring after a while as once you have done everything that can make you happy there will be only sadness left.

If you live forever the good things in life will gradually become meaningless while the bad memories build up until they break down your very sanity and you are left a husk of a human trapped in your own despair.

A bit of a bleak outlook perhaps but we are mortal for a reason. Or rather we were born mortal and our minds have evolved with that fact. We have not evolved to live forever.

I hate the idea of living forever. Things would be so... tedious, not to mention meaningless. The knowledge that we will all one day die gives us the motivation to make the most of life, to follow our dreams and take risks. If we were to live forever life would be so repetitive.
And from a more practical point of view, think of how overpopulated we would be with no death rate. Places like China are bad enough as it is!

It's not what you think.

We ARE immortal. Death is not the end. Most of us think that it is. Death is simply when our bodies can no longer function properly. Hahaha. When our earthly ties to this world break, our soul goes on to Heaven, of course!

There we live happily, forever. Green velvet grass, warm breezes, the endless sunset above the bottomless ocean. Billions of colors we haven't seen or imagined, food we haven't tasted growing on every tree, music that never sounded so beautiful.

And it will never get boring because there is SO MUCH to do. Even I wonder how it couldn't get boring. Eternity sounds depressing. But think about it, we do the same thing all the time EVERY SINGLE DAY and call ourselves happy. We never tire of the same old same old. So how can we tire of something that never ends and is always new?

And theres more . . .the Coup' de 'Grace of it all. . . theres Him!

Id say mortality is a great thing, we would end up over populated and very very bored

Id hate to live forever. :monster:

Death isn't something Iv ever really been worried about, it's getting old that freaks me out :wacky:

This reminds me of the movie Troy that I saw last night.

Brad Pitt (Achilles) said that the Gods envied them because they ARE mortal. Everything seems more beautiful that way, because you never know which day will be your last. Kinda cheesy, I know, but it makes sense to me. I mean, if I knew that I was immortal, I would be one lazy and apathetic son of a bitch. Instead, I am motivated to go out and pursue a higher education, get my own career, travel the world, and have my own family before my time is up. The sheer fact that I am mortal drives me to have such aspirations.

Being immortal would suck too, seeing as how the world is gonna explode one day. :P

Sounds too perfect to be true, imho.

The Earth would have been gone by now, and you never would have lived for a second if everyone before lived forever.

Immortality might be a good thing. As is, it seems humans don't live long enough to learn the error of their ways. I think if we lived forever we would probably be forced to rethink the way we use the world and would become more wise as a race. Of course, if humans are immortal then there's definitely the overpopulation issue....which we already have as it is.

Man is a sinful , emotional animal , who gives into wants that have become needs. What makes him / her happy is what is considered social evolution and a better life. If humans lived for ever they would never be satisfied or accept reality and their existence as a human being. If humans lived forever they would want as much control as the gods. Man is an animal that lives and dies in any other world where he lives forever it is another world, if to take place, it would be the end of this world.

No planet changes , it is what it is . As well as the animals on it. It would not work , and we can not even speculate a world where man lives forever.

I think the point of studying history is to learn the error of our ways, not living forever. At least, that's the excuse that teachers use. Some people never learn how terrible their acts are, and I doubt giving them more time to terrorize the Earth will help enlighten them in any way, shape, or form.

Hey, give man some credit. We have brains, we can control our own actions. If you have to live on the earth 1000 years from now, you're probably not going to ruin the earth in 50 years. Also, I don't really get what you're trying to put across in that last underlined bit.

I revised it to make it mean what I intended

Really it does not change even with civilization man was always the same animal , it just took him awhile to realize his potential to be that animal , and he did it freely. With all these cars, cities , he is no different than the lustful , sinful animal he was 100's of years ago. Man wont change. Just an opinion.

Okay, let me assume that there is life after death... Even so, we don't know that for sure. Some don't believe it. Therefore, the effects of mortality still stand for some; people appreciate their life more, and live it to the full. I think mortality is a good thing 'cause we realise that every moment is precious. Although that's not true for everyone...

It's a hard question to answer, and I can't be as philosophical in my answer. Nonetheless, I do think it's a good thing. Even if there is a life after death, this illusion of mortality makes many of us do more. If we knew we had forever, we might not ever take a chance to live.

It is not so much the boredom or meaninglessness in an infinite life than it is the fear of not existing that seems to be the problem.

But if I could live forever, I might continue to live on and age in such a terrible way, that to even breath might bring pain--and then I would wish for it all to end, even if I might still be able to do math, but not rollerblade.

If life were eternal, then there is no meaning for anything that I do, and there is no value in life to be had--you simply cannot imagine a life that does not exist because it will always continue to exist.

Now I would also like to apply the finite length of life to existence as well, and say that not having an afterlife is good and fine for me as well. If it is to be the end so that I may have enjoyed my life well, then it is to be the end that I have nothing better to look forward to, otherwise the life that I have lived has no meaning.

I personally enjoy a life that is short and sweet.

Yes. If everyone lived forever, there would be massive overcrowding. Only those really valuable to humanity should be given immortality, once it comes about. And I mean really. And even they would fade into the background after a few centuries.
Humans just don't have the psychology to live with immortality, either. Most people would get bored to death(pun intended) with endless lives, I think.
