Is it just me or did no character in FFX ever say the name Tidus ?

It seems strange that they didn't since he is the "hero" and the main character.

Throughout the game he is referred to as " crybaby " by Jecht, " You " by Yuna and also " Him " by Yuna. Also as far as I remember the other characters don't even address him, they just start talking to him.

If anybody has any evidence of any character saying the name Tidus during the game then do let me know =D

There is no evidence because no one ever says his name. It was made that way because you get to name him whatever you want, incase you forgot about that. So it would be strange naming him "Zen" or "Sissyboy", if they called him Tidus anyway.

They don't mention his name because his name is up to the player, you have the chance to change it. And that doesn't exactly work well with voice acting.

Ah yeah that makes sense :P

Thanks for pointing that out, never thought about that really.

Now I feel stupid :P

I used to think that they shouldn't have done it like that, but then I noticed how dumb the name Tidus sounds to begin with, so it suddenly seemed like a good choice on their part. :P

I also started to have the same ideas:P

Imagining Yuna saying Tidus in my head didn't really fit.

Infact thinking about it now imagining and character saying Tidus sounds stupid :P

No one actually can say Tidus out loud for the obvious reason.
However in Kilika just after sin attacks, one of the Aurochs fixing stuff will say Tidus, or whatever your character's name happens to be. However they don't actually speak, it's wriiten at the bottom.

The reason know one said tidus is because you get to choose a name at the start soo they just call him kid or the newest guardian or sumthing like that.
Cause the people in the game wont be able to pronounce another name.

The annoying thing about that is that when I first started playing it, until I watched the "Beyond Final Fantasy" DVD I thought he was pronounced "Tide-uss" not "Teed-us"

I prefer it when you don't get to rename the characters when it is voice encorporated, because then the pronuciation is mentioned

OMG, shoot me please. No way I'm accepting "Tee-dus" as his name! That ruins everything about his character, lol.

But from what I know, there's no official pronounciation for Tidus. It's the choice you make yourself. Me and my friends have always pronounced it as "Tide-us".

Teedus is an awful name, I thiiink it was KH where I heard it said like that and I was just so glad it was never mentioned in the game

But tbh, I never did notice that it was never said until someone here pointed it out, which makes me think there is a thread on it already but I can't find it -__-

Anyway, I just dont think we should have had the option to change Tidus's name...but on the other hand, Teedus....>_<

Tee-dus really is a bad name, but I wish that they had said it in the game anyway. I got really tired of hearing people refer to Tidus as just "him", especially in X-2.

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced "Tee-dus" just as Tifa is pronounced "Tee-fa". I think it sounds better as "Tide-us" too though, so that's what I end up calling him most of the time.

there is an official pronounciation for Tidus' name.
The voice actor, James Arnold Taylor pronounces Tidus' name as "Tea-dus".
I think that makes sense.

Something rather odd ???

I love FF X and I beat it like 4-5 times...
On my 2nd or 3rd playtrough I noticed something odd.
I never ever, not even once i heard someone saying the name Tidus, talking about him in conversation or smthing else...
It could be my imagination but I also got this feeling that his name is being avoided on purpse in some occasions trough game.
Im sure it cant be coincidence and that there is some weird explanation for this....
Did anyone else noticed this and does anyone know a good explanation...???
I would really like to hear some comments cause this thing has been bugging me for quite a long time :)

P.S. dont move this to help booth

I think it's because they give you the option to change Tidus' name at the beginning of the game. If you change his name and they still refer to him as Tidus throughout the game, it would likely get kind of confusing.

There's already been a thread on this. But basically it's because they won't be able to say whatever you've changed your name too. However characters whose speach isn't said out loud will call you by your name.

They dont say his name because you can name him yourself in FFX, so they would not want to confuse things. Or because they wanted to keep the suspense for the hardcore fans to decipher later (Although it was quite obvious)

Yeah they kept calling him "Son of Jecht" among other names to try and get around it while they were addressing him.. Though it felt silly after so long. Seymour was the worst for this I think. He literally said "Son of Jecht" multiple times within a short space while addressing Tidus and it sounded quite silly.

But yeah it is basically because you can change your name at the begining.. Something I personally wish they didn't have in as it made the voice overs silly in that they could never address the main character by name.

Like Hal said, when it is just text and no voice overs Tidus is called by whatever you named him at the begining. I'm not sure how common this is though.. Most text scenes appear to be non-story related... People running around the street have little reason for knowing Tidus, and would rather comment on Yuna anyway.

I think allowing you to name Tidus caused more problems than it did good... Not only because it meant no-one could ever say his name and so it felt really silly, but also because it left 90% of the players pronouncing Tidus as "Tie-dus", and hence being wrong as it is actually meant to be "Tee-dus".
