I'm looking to get into the FF series. I haven't played a single game and I don't know a great deal about the games. I am pretty much hoping to find out which of the games would be the best starting point to get the best of the story of the series and where to go from there. I own a PS3,PSP,DS and PC. Thanks in advance for any input.

Play FFIV for the DS, its an amazing game, it's also prett bloody challenging but in a good way, its such a great little story aswel, FFIII for the DS is good aswel, I like the job system in it, again, another good story defo worth a play. Theres also I & II for the PSP...but unless you really wanna experience all the games I wouldnt bother I is crap and II is so made of infuritating fail i COULD NEVER GET MUCH FURTHER THAN THE FIRST TOWN WITHOUT WANTING(ugh, caps fail) to stomp on my PS2. Oooh, Id also recommend getting Crisis Core for the PSP, but then you'd need a PS2 to play FFVII (CC is the prequel)

Ummmm, now Ive no doubt baffled you..I think Id recommend you start off on IV - but be prepared to do a lot of levelling up or you will just get your arse handed to you constantly. If you can get access to a PS2 though, Id recommend staerting on either VII, VIII, IX or X, all are glous little games with amazing stories and will ease you into the series gently

You can't go wrong, regardless of what order you play them in. If you want to play the early games, the anthologies are your best bet. I would strongly recommend FFVI on that route. After that, I would just play 'em in order starting with VII.

Oh yer I forgot you could get V and VI on the GBA.... V is an awful game though, if you play that first I swear it'l put you off for life... the job system is diabolical and the characters are pretty bland too, about the only decent character is Faris D:

VI is an epic game though, I think I struggled my way through that but it's worth it the story is one of the best

Well, personally I think FFX would be good for beginners. Although, I haven't played even half the series, it has easy controls to pick up, a great story, awesome gameplay etc. It's one of the best in the series, if not the best and has great graphics with voiceovers. It is very good for beginners, in my opinion, as it allows substitutes, and guides you along. I dunno'... It's fun but you could try just about any... Well, other than VIII, as that one is fairly confusing and hard.

Actually Depending on the hard-drive and what type of PS3 you have. You can play any PlayStation Final Fantasy on the PS3 with the backwards compatibility. That is what I do on my PS3. Just have to create a memory card slot for that specific game. So to find out if your PS3 is backwards compatible.

Here you go...\

Wow, can't say I've ever really met someone who didn't play a Final Fantasy game...NOOB! :gasp:

Really though, the stories between each one don't correlate unless specified (like X and X-2, etc.). Regardless; you should start with Final Fantasy 1 of course :D You can basically play any of them since you have a PC; just get an emulator for the really old systems.

If your PS3 is backwards-compatible I would recommend that you start with Final Fantasy X, In my opinion X is the most beginner friendly FF game. It has a good storyline, good characters, good game play ect..

If graphics aren't too much of an issue for you; I'd suggest that you give the GBA version of FFVI a try. It is one of my personal favorites and it will give you a good idea of what the FF series is all about.

But as said above me, you can't go wrong if you choose any game from the main series (I.E any game with a roman numeral). None of the storylines from the main series are directly related. However, if you want to play the spin offs/sequels such as Crisis Core (PSP) Dirge of Ceberus (PS2) and FFX-2 (PS2) I'd be sure to play the main games (FFVII and FFX respectively) before you play the sequels and spin offs.

To address your first point, I've been too busy with masterpieces such as MGS and Half Life:busta: ....but something tells me FF is in that upper echelon of high quality gaming too. I just seen Sepiroth topping a list of evil villains ahead of some of the greats, so that particular story must be epic.

Anyway, you have all been very helpful but I didn't realise the games didn't correlate like this. I just assumed that each game in the series was an installment of some massive epic story. That's good to know then since I won't feel like I'm missing out if I start at certain points.

Well, I'll be starting my journey soon. I bet some of you wish you still had your FF virginity ready to have your mind blown for the first time. :P

I'd go with 4, 6, 9, 10. Also, 7 and 8 are good to play just because so many people love them (I'm not a huge fan though) and people will expect you to know about them if you're a FF fan. The others IMO aren't very important. I also tend to believe that after 10, the real FF games stopped. Which includes 10-2, 11 and 12.

Also if you like strategy games, Tactics (the one for the ps1, SNES and PSP, the old school tactics) is a great game for you.

Don't worry, Moonshine is here to hold your hand little one.

First of all each and every Final Fantasy numbered instalment is individual to each other. Other than basic game play, each one has a story irrelevant to the others and the way your characters develop are different. This means you could pick up any FF and it won't be the wrong choice. Well technically.

If you want to get a feel for the series in general I would stay away from XII for now. It is radically different to the rest of the series so isn't a good representation though I do recommend playing it at some point regardless of what others say. I'd also stay away from I and II as these, even the PSP remakes, are far to primative compared to later installments. Now with these taken out of the equation your left with the typical FF games. If your new to the seires I'll recommend you lay off IV, V, and VI (and VII maybe?) until you've decided your a fan. These are great games but you might get put off from their graphics and how seemingly 'under-developed' they are compared to nowadays standerds. Start with something more modern and build yourself up for them. Most people would say X is your best bet. FUCK THEM! X is still too different if your looking for a good representive of the seires on the whole (ie it misses the World Map and other features FF is known for) but I do recommend playing it as it is one of the best overall. VIII and IX probably sum up the seires the best. Epic stories to get indulged in, fresh character development systems, the world-map and basically everything that made the old games great aswell as a look into how the seires is progressing. Plus you get a taste from both FF styles (in terms of look and gameplay).

You see Final Fantasy games can be split into 2 distinct groups in terms of gameplay. The games that give you your almost pre-set characters and you simply level them up or modify them, each having their own strenghs and weaknessess to work with (I, IV, VI, VIII, IX) or the games where you're given more freedom and choose how your characters pans out (II, III, V, VII is a bit of both, X, XII). These can then also be futher grouped by the look of the game; traditional fantasy or modern/futuristic sci-fi. IX has the traditional look from the older Nintendo-era games, whilst VIII has the more modern/futuristic approch that came after. Definitly the best starting points for a n00b on the whole as different people have different tastes. You may like having the freedom of choice with your characters but you may hate how restricted set-parties can be and vise-virsa.

So yeah, FF VIII or IX. Then if you like go on to X or delve into the earlier ones. Hope I helped a tad and welcome to the world of Final Fantasy. Now i'm going to go back under my rock and have a saucy cocktail.

It really doesn't matter where you start. Each one has a different plot that can exist independently from each other.

If you're looking to start off with something on the easier side, go with FFX. If you're looking for a compelling plot, well IX and VI are my favorites in that category. If you're looking for something difficult, well anything before VII should suffice.

It's really up to your personal preference.

I say you shouldn't start with X because it doesn't have the leveling up that the previous games had, it's a great game but I think you should get the feeling of what a classic FF game would be with all it's trademark features first. I recomend VI for a start. Great story and characters and really beautiful scenes. After that you should play any other FF game, I'd say VII or VIII (the Materia thing on VII is easy to understand, but the Junction system of VIII can be a little tricky in the beginning; you'll eventually get that though), or if you want the different thing, X is one of the best, not only the graphics but the characters and the story as well (haven't played XII yet so I'll stop on X).

And welcome to the Final Fantasy world =)

This is about the best advice I've seen to a brand-new FF person. I applaud and rep you for this. :awesome:

However, I will disagree with the choice of Eight...even though that is my favorite FF. I would replace Seven with Eight, and here's why: the Junction system. Someone who is trying to figure out if they actually like the games is likely to find Junctioning off-putting...so I'd recommend Seven instead. But the rest stands. The games are really able to be split into the two categories mentioned above...and you don't really NEED to start anywhere to get the "Final Fantasy" experience...if such a thing exists.

Good hunting to you. :wacky:

FF one - GBA & PSP Would avoid both versions for now. FF I has great difficulty and character and storyline shortage, it would be a good idea to pick up One later.

FF Two- GBA & PSP - Avoid. It's more difficult and more frustrating than one.. :/

FF Three- DS - FF3 has a good storyline and battle system and if you pick it up first it should leave you have a fun and enjoyable experience of the Final Fantasy series.

FF Four- DS - Would say to pick up FF IV before FF 3 having more characters, and more deeper storyline, and it should leave you have a deep expression of the FF series.

FF Five- GBA - FF 5 is a fun game, but would leave it alone for now..

FF Six- GBA- If your not too graphics shy, and is a patient player you can't go wrong.

FF VII- PS- Would avoid for now, unless you have watched Advent Children and is asking for questions...

FF VIII-PS - Again would avoid, until later on. ( The Junction system, grhh :/ )

FF IX -PS - IX is a unique Final Fantasy game, and doesn't make sense unless you have played the older games ( Well it does make sense, but it makes * Better * sense ^^ )
Would say pick up IV III and VI before heading for IX.

FF X- PS - X is great for beginning with, with a easier Final Fantasy battle system.
If you want a easy start, X is your best bet.

FF XII- XII is for later on in your FF journey like IX and V.. Because the battle system and storyline base is way different from the normal Final Fantasy game..

But, Overall would say start with IV on the DS.

Yeah I realised after that VIII probably wasn't that great of a choice 'cos of it's junctioning system, just couldn't be bothered to go back and edit it :wacky: and completely agree with replacing it with VII. I just thought VII wouldn't be for first time players because of it's confusing story-line and now very dated graphics (or at least more dated than VIII). The Materia system allowes the player to modifiy their characters to their preferance ability-wise, whilst still keeping their defult strengths and weaknesses, which is a good contrast to the set 'classes' of IX. In a way VIII's Junctioning system is a more developed and detailed version of VII's Materia system so it does make sense to get to grips with VII before VIII.

Oh and now that Firionie above mentions it, if you do decide to go through the older Final Fantasy's, replay IX after because it serves as a celebration of the series up to that point so has elements from several and many cool references to look out for.

I would not recommend II or III. They are both frustrating and have a low entertainment value. I liked IV and VI. They both have a good story with a variety of characters.

you can play playstation games on any model of PS3, i have an 80gb Ps3 and i'm able to play VII and IX, its only the 60gb PS3 thats PS2 backwards which is annoying as i had to but a new PS2 to play X and VIII again as VIII didnt work,

80gb?! Seriously?!

Anyway, yeah, to follow what Moonshine said, don't start with XII. It is radically different from the other games. I, II, III you might find rather challenging, so keep away from them for now. I would go with playing VIII/IX (Decent storylines, Interesting levelling up systems, easy to follow) - you don't need to start with VII, it really isn't vital you need to PLAY THE BEST ONE EVA /lol. I'm tempted to say X also, but it doesn't have the traditional level up system. Not that it's hard to figure out like. Once you've started, and played the main games, move onto sequels and prequels etc.

Well, thanks again to everyone, Moonshine in particular. You have summed it up perfectly. I'm gonna start with VII and take it from there. So I guess it's caio for now, until I've played a couple of games and come back to entertain you all with out-dated rants of great fascination on the plot twists and such.
