Revealed in the latest Shonen Jump, a Japanese manga magazine, is Lightning wielding a new weapon. While this otherwise would be only a small item of note, this is the first confirmation that characters in Final Fantasy XIII will be able to equip different weapons.

Up until now each character has only been shown with one standard weapon, likely their starting weapon. Confirmation of multiple weapons available throughout the game follows the series now, however it has been a point of speculation as to whether it would continue in Final Fantasy XIII.

Lightning's new weapon is featured in the first scan below, though not in high detail. The third scan below is a closer look at the weapon.

That's reassuring! I would hate it if it is like FFX-2 again when you can't customise or buy any weapons except change dresspheres. I'm the sort of person who likes swapping between weapon after weapon. Hopefully there will be an enormous variety.

But please, Square-Enix- don't put another Zodiac Spear-esque element in the game where you have to not open certain treasure chests to acquire it. I've yet to replay FFXII all over again to get the weapon!

Yeah I swap weapons a lot as well. Hopefully they'll look a bit more attract than that one though, it looks like a big shard of steel with a handle shoved on the end. :wacky:

This is good news. I did not want to only use one weapon,as that would have taken out the variety in the game. This is very reassuring, yes. I just hope that her swords are all cool as the one she weilds in the magazine

I always fell kinda sad when I hafta change weapons... It's kinda sad, I know. But I could never change weapons like Brotherhood, when they had meaning behind it. But it doesn't look like Lightning is too attached to her gun-blade-thing.

I know exactly what you mean, Sorrelstar. I'm the same way with Cloud in FF VII, I can't stand having to change from the Buster Sword because it represents so much: Angeal's honor, Zack's friendship, etc. I'm the same with the Brotherhood in X, I hate changing it because of what it represents.

I like the ability to change weapons, but I also wish that you could upgrade your starting weapon somehow to end up as the most powerful in the game. Like, for example, the Brotherhood. It starts out weak, but eventually gains more slots and more abilities. If they had kept those slots empty, it could very well have been the best sword in the game if you chose to make it that way. I wish they'd incorporate that system into the game, but I doubt it will happen.

I know. That was so annoying.

I'm really glad to hear this. I had assumed that each character would have one weapon that gets upgraded, like in FF8.

I love it when you can equip new weapons and you can atcually SEE them equppied!! Im a geek like that lol. But nice to know we can customise weapons again, I love doing that :D Although its a pain losing a certain weapon you like to craft a new.

I kind of suspected that the characters of FF13 would be able to wield other weapons but this is a glorious confirmation!

Sapphirestar: I love that too! It shows that the game designers actually put a lot of effort in the game to make it seem as realistic as possible.

I am really looking forward for this game now.

Omg yes I LOVE THIS NEWS! Ryan you are awesome! Oh and that new weapon looks really good and I cant wait to see the other weapons. FF XIII is really going to be the best game ever!

Haha, I didn't even consider the idea of the characters NOT being able to change their weapons. I mean, isn't that possible in all the FF games? :wacky:

I think they might mean visually as well, because we you look at the secondary image that's definitely not the weapon we first saw Lightning wield :hmmm:

I just assumed like Fusionist that you would just be able to change weapons like the other games. XD

But yeah, I'm glad it's not like FFX-2. It was fun with the dresspheres for a while, but I really prefer having the choice in which weapon I want to use when in battle. >_<
