Final Fantasy XIII launched last Tuesday and a little over a week later, Square Enix has announced that the game has became the fastest selling game in the franchise’s history.

Final Fantasy XIII
has sold over one million copies in the first five days following the game’s release. The Final Fantasy franchise has now sold over 96 million units in total since the series launched over twenty years ago.
No details were shared about how many copies the game sold on each system.

Not surprising, really. I mean, we had to wait for it long enough. Its had insane amounts of hype and advertising. It looks absolutely gorgeous, and a lot of people judge a game purely on graphics these days. The mixed reviews mean that its very hard for those with a passing interest to get a proper feel for the game without buying a copy for themselves, and, of course, it being on Xbox 360 as well means that there is a larger market this time around.

...there's nothing more to say. Martel basically said everything I was thinking after reading the FP.

It's great of course. After XII I was scared that over the years, gradually less and less people would be buying the upcoming games. This is great news for me personally, knowing that the series is still going as strong, ish. (fanbase wise)

EDIT: few spelling mistakes.

These figures are a testament to Square's advertising, build up and crucially the FFs before it. Not the quality of the game.

Obviously Square are still riding the hysteria gravy train. The more their flop titles sell the more flop titles they'll be churning out.

When the hype and sensationalists die down we're left with the brutal reality that the last FF we fans could be genuinely proud of was FFX. Here are some sobering statistics:

FFX was released in 2001. The current year is 2010.
FFVII - X were all released within 4 years. FFXIII was released 4 years after FFXII.

How often can Square keep going to the well and coming back empty handed?

I don't care if the size of the sandbox worlds of yester-millenium are too difficult and vast to implement for this generation. Make a crappier looking game, scrap compilation spinoffs, cut down on FMVs, spend the billions you've made from trash, spam me with discs...

...ANYTHING!! :rage:

My disillusionment has reached a stage where, slap me for saying it, I'm waiting for another developer to pick up the scraps of the genre and jump ship...

...Heartbreaking...

In terms of people having interest in the games-- there is still a huge base. But yeah, I have to agree with you. I hated XI and XII, and although I think XIII is good by its own standards-- I fear for the series.

No upcoming FF game will ever surpass VI through til X. Having said that-- I'm one of Sqeenixes bitches, because I'd preorder the next 5 installments if that were possible. I can't let go of the series :(

I'll have to agree with you there, I'll be buying the next installment, then the next, and then the next...

All of it will be in blind hope that they decide to pull their fingers out and produce something the rest of the genre and their fans expect and, by now deserve of Square.

FF's name is being dragged through the dirt.
Its embarrassing.

In my opinion, the game only sold half as much due to the mega level hype that surrounded it up until it's release and afterwards. Square went to all the stops to portray one message: "This game will rock. Buy it" They did many things that hyped up fans old and new into buying the game. When all the hype does indeed die down, I am not sure if FFXIII will be able to still keep the multitudes coming for more.

Hurray!
Final fantasy is such a great game im not suprised!
Im so happy!
Final fantasy is the best series ever besides tomb raider!

Fastest selling in franchise history huh?

Well, I mean the fact that SE decided not to only have it on the PS3 but also on the xbox 360 was a smart move on their part making the fanbase larger so that those that enjoy the series but dont have a PS3 can get it on the 360.
I mean, there was a huge hype about XIII after the release of XII. I mean, its been forever since XII so, now that its out fans all over want the game ya know?
The series itself is popular so, I cant say that i'm completely shocked however, this is really interesting news.

I agree with this right here. I mean a lot of FF fans hated SE for allowing an FF to be associated with Microsoft but its an extremely smart move that I honestly think we will be seeing more often. I mean lets face it, Microsoft isn't lacking in the money these days so when SE comes up with something awesome that they want on the 360 they just grab some pocket change (exaggerating of course) and ask them to make a 360 version.

This is pretty awesome though I just bought the game yesterday and I am in the middle of Chapter 4 I think :hmmm:. So I remember seeing the thread that if XIII sells good then there is a good chance for and XIII-2, I think that is looking more and more a possibility now.

Haha this was to be expected! Final Fantasy XIII is really really good and Yes putting it on the xbox 360 was a really good idea. They sold even more copys like that! Like Kaylee said it made the fanbase bigger and it was a really really long time to wait since FF XII. Im sure its gonna sell alot still. You will see >_>

Well as other mentioned, making people waiting a couple of years for a main series game is one way to ensure sales when it finally get's released. A great way to piss off the fans though xD

Regardless of people's opinion after playing the game, FFXIII was still a success in terms of sales. Although I admit that was mostly based on advertising and general hype. I'm sure many fans of the series got the game, but enough curious gamers not familiar with the series took a chance and bought the game as well.
