final fantasy 8 is under rated

i've got a lot favorite ff games but..ff8 had incredible story and the characters in the game were cool too, good personality and all. but i still think it should have gotten a lot more credits than it did. because there's a lot about it you could say were better than some other ff games. but one thing that anoyed me were the junction system because of it the game got too easy. but it was a cool experiment.

Lol @ all the mentioning of VII here. Is it really necessary by any means other than comparison? But than why not to IX, VI, or X? Perhaps, in using it as a standard of reference, a lot of you are answering certain questions of this thread.
I'm pretty sure it was mentioned here because it is the most popular and best-selling Final Fantasy to date. Therefore, it is an example of what Final Fantasy is capable of accomplishing. Especially in this case, where it is the game that immediately preceded VIII, so one could assume that the success of FFVII would drive more people to look into FFVIII. Besides, the only way to say that something is underrated is to then ask "Compared to what?"

Anyway, I do agree that, while FFVIII is my favorite of the series, I'm not sure it's entirely underrated. A lot of the complaints and criticisms of the game seem fair enough to me.

Yes, drawing magic can get boring. The junctioning system can be intimidating and confusing. The story gets pretty bizarre pretty quickly, and there are some pretty lame aspects to it in general. It's just that some of us are more willing to overlook them and not let those things ruin the game for us.

But I do think it's underrated in the sense that I wish more people could play the game and find the same enjoyment in it that its fans do. But to each their own, I suppose.

My saying that was rhetoric fodder to set up the final statement of that paragraph, which the above supports. Once again, the use of VII (its' predecessor) as a virtually fixed means of comparison illustrates just where FF VIII stands and, therefore, answers the questions addressed in this thread.

It really isn't underrated.

Fair enough. I must've misinterpreted your meaning, but I agree with your conclusion. It's still a rad game, and I wish more people could enjoy it, but it does have flaws, and it is what it is.

I think both games are great tbh. Since VIII came out after VII and VII being popular, it did seem a little hidden underneath VII. VIII though, was a greatest hit, no? I mean, I don't think it's underrated. I'm sure there's people that don't like the game, which is fine byall means but, I don't think it was IMO.

I do think that it is a bit unfair. VIII is one of the best games in the series IMO. It just didn't have a chance because the world was still reveling in the awesomeness and epicness of VII.

I didn't get into the Final Fantasy series until the PS2 age came about. I actually played FF8 before the others and guess what? I didn't like it. It was boring, it was slow, and while I loved most of the characters, the story itself gave me little incentive to play all the way until the end. I guess that's why I love VII and IX because I used measured them up to VIII (quite the opposite from what everyone else did).

It definitely is a good Final Fantasy game, better than some of the newer ones out. I agree it shouldn't be FF7's shadow, but FF7 was the first Final Fantasy game to come out for Playstation and its plot line was very interesting as well. I'll agree for me it was VII that had the best plot and VIII is the one with the best music. The plot was kind of slow, but it's still actually rated as one of the good FF games.

definitely my favourite game of the series, i probably got it quite late but ye never heard it mentioned.

love the characters, squall for his complexity, zell for being an eejit :

great cutscene after great cut-scene:
squall vs seifer
the SEED exam
waltz of the moon
charge sorceress edea
squall dies!(not really)

great summon system, draw from bosses now an then an wahey a new GF! good fun finding them.

love the music, waltz for the moon and lagunas theme rock

never completed it! with two play-throughs! always get to teh end with practically all starter weapons...need to focus on upgrading those next time an stop staring at the beautiful cut-scenes :p also need to do more side quests, gigantuar king tonberry ultima/omega etc

to me, the draw system seemed stupid to the point of running around getting 100 ultimas and holys and the whole stat upping skill thing always infuriated me unless you get to disk 3 with lvl one characters(entirely possible by the way but not as easy as in 9) and then there is the the thing about the summons not being that strong, and the whole get to disk 4 and you can't go back thing(actually it starts late in disk 3), and there is the whole no chocobo world for U.S. players(i need to get one of those pocket station things) i mean if it did not have such a fantastic story i would not play it that much but alas, it has a special place in my collection for tri-yearly play through, with all of it's flaws it still manages to take 70 or so odd hours away from my life every so often so it can't be that bad

I think FFVIII did a fantastic job of being a game entirely apart and unique from FFVII. I think the story has a complexity that no other FF game really has. It had a very cool feel to it, and the pacing of the game was very different to any other FF game to that point in time.

I have an awful lot of minor gripes with this game, but they are very, very minor. I don't like the remodelling system too much, and I think the junctioning system is far too easy to exploit, even very early in the game. Still, FFVIII is probably my third favourite game in the series.

Final Fantasy VIII has been my favorite FF since it came out, and remains so today. However, I've never considered it underrated. Even to me, a bit of a VIII fanboy, it's a tad overrated. The convulated storyline can be confusing at times and the battle system was great, but far from perfect. It had its good points, such as length. And you can't beat the twists and turns. But no. I don't think it's underrated. I think it's a great game, and I'll always love it. But it's got a good amount of reputatioon in the gaming world. I wouldn't really change it to become more overrated because then it would become FFVII, which I got sick to death of hearing about.

the fact that it's got 'final fantasy' in its name means that it will never be considered underrated in the gaming world is the reason why I don't think it's underrated.

I don't think it's underrated within the series either. VI is what I would call underrated. VIII has a lot of recognition and has won various awards, it is certainly not underrated and also not overrated. Even in FF concerts, Liberi Fatali and Don't Be Afraid are major crowd pleasers, and the opening movie of the game is still recognized as one of the best game intros ever.

Maybe people say it's underrated because it gets compared to VII so often, but with the number of fanboys/girls of VII, you could argue that the majority of games of any genre is underrated compared to VII.

An underrated element of the game maybe is the development of Squall as a person; too many just describe him as 'emo' without realizing that his transition by falling in love with Rinoa is something any man can compare with.

To tell you the truth a lot of my friends didnt like this one. As i said before i loved it. Yes it has a story that doesnt agree with everyone and the drawing can get a little tiring and the triple triad can get annoying, but other then that it is a great title in the series. So it is a bit underated.

PS. I know Drawing and Junctioning enough in the game can get you a powerful party, but i dont think i really ever have the time.

i think its way under rated there's so many people that go on an on about 7 but not give any of the ff's another chance. ff8 had great characters and a great story i don't believe that people should hate 7 but 8 is excellent also and doesnt get enough credit.

I agree, when I got FF8 and began playing, I had just finished FF7, so I kept thinking this is so far inferior to FF7. Once I got used to it though, I thought that it really had been judged WAY to quickly.

This is what I gotta say.

I don't think VIII is either underrated or overrated. I think it's perfectly brilliant as it is and I didn't find myself hating it as much as VII. Now VII is overrated with the attention it gets. However, I do strongly believe that IX is the underrated one here in the PS1 generation.

I don't think FFVIII is underrated at all, nor do I think it's overrated.
I know a few people that hate this game (a few for the sole reason being the Junction System) with a passion, but I also know a few people who love it, including myself. It's quite a broad game opinion wise I think, it seems to have a lot of differentiating opinions coming from it really.
Yet most of the bad views of it tend to come from the junction system from what i've seen.
Now, I think we all know which Final Fantasy is overrated, if any.

I agree with the fact that VIII is largely underrated. When you say Final Fantasy, most people seem to think of VII. (From personal experience) I think FFVII is more renowned due to the movie based on it, and the various remakes.
