Excalibur II

I've never tried to get it personally, and I doubt I ever will. Reaching that far in the game in less than 12 hours is obviously a pain in the ass. I would get more ticked off dying 1 million times due to being such a low lever the whoile time that it would take the fun right out of the game for me.

I don't really wanna try getting it cos I on't rush through FF's

I usually train up characters early and get huge amounts of hours up before doing anything

Excalibur 2 the legendary sword

Has anybody even got this weapon for steiner within the 12 hour time limit?, I have come close and clocked in at 16 hours but I simply can't understand how to get it in such a short space of time. Has anyone else here had any luck in achieving this without cheats or whatever :)

Yeah I managed it not long ago. Getting under 12 hours mostly just comes to knowing your way around the game well. Skipping the cinematics is also important, which can be done by opening the lid if you're on a PS1. I don't know how to do it on PS2/PS3/PSP though.

If that's still not enough, you can minimize the amount of random encounters you get by doing certain areas through trial and error. Therefore, if you were to get an unlucky string of battles, you should just load your game from your last save point and re play from there. You can shave a lot of time off this way. Also, use Quina as much as possible early on in the game, and pick up Limit Glove from a Mandragora. That can minimize the amount of time you spend in boss fights in the first two discs.

Yeah I've actually just cleaned up an Excalibur II run not too long ago myself. Now I'm working on a perfect save game Excalibur II run which is infinitely harder >_>

But yeah the hardest part of doing an Excalibur II run is having the patience to refuse to compromise the amount of encounters you have during the course of the game. You've also got to get used to the notion of learning how to use every skill you have to it's full potential because you won't have the brute force provided by levels to just shrug it off. For example, techniques you may overlook in a normal game that are infinitely useful for this are Steiner's Charge, Quina's almighty Limit Glove and Auto-Life, Rebirth Ring's Auto-Reflect, Zidane's lucky 7, Tent's chances of inflicting status ailments on enemies etc.

It's a lot to take in but trust me, when everything comes together it's a blast to play through just for the experience. The Excalibur II is just the icing on the cake.

Honestly, I don't see the point in getting it. It's just 2 points stronger than Ultima Weapon, it really doesn't have much of a difference from a weapon you could easily get in the game without doing a speed run. And I don't know how you could actually beat this game in less that 12 hours unless you open the lid and close it during cut scenes to skip them.

Oh I agree, there is very little point in doing it for the weapon itself, seeing as nearly all the content in the game is beaten by the time you get it anyway. It mostly just exists as a sort of trophy reward for a speed run, rather than serving as a game-changing weapon in itself.

This, while we're at it you could also say things like:

"well the card game doesn't really change anything so why play and collect them"

"beating Ozma doesn't really change anything except for an item or two, why bother"

"why spend time doing the mognet, not like the gain is worth it"

"why get an ultima weapon, you can kill anything with a lesser one"

The problem with getting Excalibur II, is the fact is, if you want a 100% game, it would be a bitch to get everything on the way that you will not be able to go back and get if you pass it up, so...12mins is to damn short!

This weapon is very powerful, great addition to your arsenal, but you do not have enough time to accumulate the Arsenal! I personally think it Rune game. Although I did not do my first, for the first time, I always play properly.
