Epic lags of fail

Can anyone shed any light on why the sites been so fucking horrendous recently?

The SB lags more than Ive EVER seen it before, it's not like it's only at certain times anymore either, it's CONSTANT. I don't get the 'page load errors' much anymore, and I rarely if ever get the busy server message. The stats hardly refresh for me either, infact when I HIT refresh,. it takes about 5 minutes for everything to load, editting a post is nigh on impossible unless I want to bust an artery in frustration ¬¬

IT'S. JUST. THE. LAG. It's driving me insane

We can't even blame the RPG people this time since the RPG has been up for a while :(
It's time for a sever change methinks, if not, Dave will know what to do. :ryan:

We already asked LG awhile back about a server change and according to him this is the best we can get, that we're currently on anyway. He's gonne have to be PM'd and to let him know what's going on in regards to the lag. I doubt there's going to be a server change anytime soon though.

I think the server is fine, I think it just needs a reboot or an update of sorts. Unfortunately, servers are not my specialty when it comes to computers, so I'm not totally sure of how the problem can be solved, but I'm thinking a reboot or update or both will help immensely. Either way, I'm sure the problem will be resolved soon enough.

Aye, pick on the RPG people again -__-
It is not like the SB helps either >.>

Besides, I rarely get this lags, and I've been able to open several tabs in the RPG Inf. ACP and submit different commands simultaneously. Of course, things get fecked up when we have lots of people online AND using the shout box. ;D

Those unfortunate ones who get more lags than me (Kelly and co.) well...

Sucks to be you :dave:

I've been moaning in HQ recently about how a rather peculiar, black screen has prevented me from making any posts in under 30 minutes. Anything I typed before the black screen kicked in (it always followed a frozen page) then appeared written completely backwards as to how I'd done it (e.g. "Hello, everyone!" quite literally jumped up as "!enoyreve ,olleH". From what we've heard, I've been one of the worst victims of the lag but I've done a few things today and the lag is almost completely gone - it's no worse than it's been before!

I'm not entirely sure exactly which of the following had the greatest impact but combining all of the following actions has made the site fly by.

  1. Deleted my PM messages (I had over 900 stored in my box)
  2. Went in to my User Control Panel, then clicked "Edit Options" and simplified the way I used the site (I now only see 5 posts per page to prevent the site from having to load my usual 20, I only want to see threads from 2 months ago until the present, et cetera)
  3. I now use the Quick Reply Box to evade the possibility of the "replying to post" page freezing
  4. I cleared my internet cache, cookies, et cetera
  5. I completely removed things on my PC that I never use/that took up too much space (removing Skype seems to have made my computer speedy again!)
  6. I ran a "Disk Clean-Up" and followed that with several defragmenting sessions.
  7. I un-installed then re-installed Firefox, in case it was my browser that was causing the problems (despite EVERY other site in the entire world working perfectly. xD)
Hope this helps anyone suffering as badly as I did.

Maybe this is the most stupid thing to say,

But maybe it's the archives? The old thread's that are stored? Though I doubt this could be it.

The site's been super laggy for me to, for a good two months already now. I don't keep PM's in their folders, and everything still lags all the same, so I dunno but it IS buggy. <.>

Or, more wholistically, it's all of the threads on the site; this is why I now believe that the change, which made the greatest impact, was the number of threads I want FFF to load every time I come to the site. I'm now only viewing threads from 2 months ago until the present; the site doesn't have to load an extra 3 years worth of material for me, anymore. I can't categorically state that this is the reason but, regardless, FFF's as good as new for me, now.

.

done that

  1. Went in to my User Control Panel, then clicked "Edit Options" and simplified the way I used the site (I now only see 5 posts per page to prevent the site from having to load my usual 20, I only want to see threads from 2 months ago until the present, et cetera)

.

Ive always done that

  1. I cleared my internet cache, cookies, et cetera
.

did that not too long ago

  1. I completely removed things on my PC that I never use/that took up too much space (removing Skype seems to have made my computer speedy again!)
.

Skype KILLED my pc when I had it so I got rid of it and reinstalled it. Might get rid of it again ¬¬

  1. I ran a "Disk Clean-Up" and followed that with several defragmenting sessions.
.

Wouldn't even know how to DO that

  1. I un-installed then re-installed Firefox, in case it was my browser that was causing the problems (despite EVERY other site in the entire world working perfectly. xD)
.

...or that

And Im still lagging like a bitch, its particularily bad today, everything is taking an age and a half to load and its taking about 3 years for shouts to go through

Both of those things can be done through the control panel in My Computer.

The main problem would be the server though, would it not? I've always thought that FFF was on a shared server, so the more traffic the other sites get, the slower they'll all run from that server. So the only permanent solution would be to switch to a new server. Unless I'm completely wrong about that, which is likely.

LG's said that FFF is on a dedicated server, and it's the best server money can buy, apparently. So, the server isn't the problem for those who are experiencing lag.

For me, it is the server, there's no two ways about it.
I can happily browse other FF Forums and major gaming sites without a problem and even though their traffic will be much larger, it's FFF that gives me the whole SB lag, slow page loading etc, and that's on several computers.

Today the lag for me is kinda acting up, but I normally don't get any lag at all. There's really only one suggestion that LG had for us to try and that was disabling the shoutbox to see if perhaps that might be the source of the lag. I'm not sure how you guys feel about that since the shoutbox is so popular.

I don't think it'll go down well, but I think that it should be done as a trial period to see what happens, maybe a day or so at most if need be and then take it from there. Theoretically though forum activity should also pick up as well as I've spoken to 2 or 3 FF site owners who've stated that the SB takes away attention from actually posting.

Anyways, whilst I personally don't like the idea of not having a SB, I'd sacrifice it in order to reduce the lag.

Yeah, we'd been talking about disabling it for a couple of days and see how the site does without the shoutbox. If it turns out it IS the shoutbox, we did think of other alternatives to it, like chat rooms or something like that. I really don't want to risk losing any activity if we do disable it for a couple of days, so we'd definitely come up with another way for the members to chat.

The hell if I know. The shoutbox has been here since Darkblade's days and back then the site was on a really shitty server.

The SB is going to be a major contributor to the site lag due to how many transmissions it's making to and from the server, as with Inferno, so of course by removing it site performance will improve. However I don't think it's entirely necessary to resort to that yet. The SB is the main source of activity here. =/

I've mentioned this to someone on staff in the past... possibly Kelly, but the fact we have vBSEO isn't going to help either. Rather than just getting the main page up on Google (and such), it forces every thread on this entire site onto the search engine when a search is made. I use the thread "Sab's Creations" as an example; it'll be the second result down... which, in all fairness, is a mostly pointless feature to have. If people search for a forum, FFF will be the first to come up - that's all the site needs; nobody's going to type the exact thread name on more than a handful of occasions and land on one of our threads. =/

Well idk what it is but I Have been experiencing terrible lag. The sb sometimes does not even load for me. Sometimes it freezes for like 10 minutes and then different shouts come up. Its just weird. I like the sb and I know others do so it would be quite wise to remove it. Im not sure if it is the sb. I think its the server tbh.

LG's said that FFF is on a dedicated server, and it's the best server money can buy, apparently.

I'd be willing to bet it's neither, but if LG reckons so then we'll just have to go with that.

If it turns out it IS the shoutbox, we did think of other alternatives to it, like chat rooms or something like that.

Shinryuu did suggest IRC chatrooms a while back. You could use a free server and have a java applet on the site, though you'd have to wave bye-bye to the smilies.

The AJAX applications (ie the Shoutbox, RPG Inferno and to a lesser extent, the "recent replies" box) are most likely to blame for the responsiveness of the site.
