I'm playing FFVI Advance and I got to the part where everyone's leaving Thamasa and I was horrified to see Edgar hitting on Relm. Now, you may think his line "I hope you're still around when you're 18" is just because he wants another woman to hit on, but I don't think he'd say that if he wasn't already attracted to her. Also, remember that little girl running around Figaro Castle? She says that Edgar said he'd marry her when she grows up.

The topic of discussion is: Does Edgar like women regardless of age, or does he seriously just want Relm and the girl in Figaro to grow up so he has more ladies to get rejected by?
 
It's far more clear in the original Japanese that Edgar goes after it all. Young, old & everything inbetween (that's practically a line one of the women in Figaro says of him)...but his line to Relm is slightly more ambiguous because he starts to ask how old she is, but then stops himself saying that it's criminal...and Relm calls him "randy man" or some such...check out the RPGOne retranslation if you wanna see for yourself.
 
I noticed this too, however I don't think Edgar is a pedophile. I just think he has an obsession with good looking girls. I mean the girls in the FF series are pretty hot.
 
At the same time, he says "When you're 18," and "When you grow up".

So I don't think that makes him a pedophile considering that he doesn't actually go after the younger girls. Maybe he simply looks at the younger girls, realizes that they are pretty and will still be pretty when they come of age.

If he were a pedophile, he would have been making moves on those young girls regardless if it was wanted or not.

Going by the fan retranslation (suggested above), this does not appear in the original Japanese. The relevant part is actually:

Relm
"What's wrong, randy man?"
Edgar
"How old are you?"
Relm
"Ten."
Edgar
"That's just criminal...... Don't even think of it."

But Nintendo of America had strict rules for the content of the games it released, and so that's probably why they changed the meaning.
 
Edgar isn't a paedophile. As they love children, and therefore don't love older women such as Terra etc.

Nah, he isn't. And if the "that's criminal...don't think of it" thing is true for the japan version, than that means he knows it's wrong, and isn't going to go further with it.

Anyway, no, he's not an pedophile. An complete and utter whore, yes, but he waits until women are old enough before shamelessly hitting on them. :P

I don't like the Japanese translation. The delightful craziness of the American translation is what makes me like the game so much, really.
 
You also got to take into consideration that it is a game from the Japs, and we all know how much they are lenient towards younger ages sexual-wise. I don't think he would have gone ahead with it as she is a tad bit too young at the time, but the thought was definitely there. Edgar for the epic win!
 
Edgar is loli and I personally find that hilarious. Another thing about the original Japanese was that I found Relm to be far less annoying with her 1st person speech pattern (that may just be me though)...
 
I think it's just the times setting. This game is set in more of a "castle times" sorta timie (yeah that makes sense), where the people who are royalty or set up in high positions in the area look out for the younger generation and know the dangers of being out and about especially if you're a younger girl. I think Edgar is jsut trying to make it friendly with Realm because it's a character trait of his; not a side-effect of Viagra.
 
Alright, someone needs to make it clear here EXACTLY what the say to each other in each translation that exists :P

Not a bad pairing, anyway, i was planning to write something about it years ago, but never really got started with writing it.
 
Lol yeah Edgar has an obsession alright. I jus started to play the game so I don't know if he learns manners or not. He reminded me of the guy in FFVII that works in the slums. Where cloud has to act like a girl. THat dude was obsessed also :D.
 
Do you think shadow would let Edagar get a hold on relm i think he would kill him badly and gory before letting Edgar have his daughter. Edgar is i get what i can get dude jaja he just wants to have fun not like Sabin he is more mature and serious than Edgar.

Nah i dont think hes a paedo, maybe in need of gettin laid but he wouldnt go away with a youngster, i reckon he knows whats right and wrong. He flirts with the girls but thats harmless and seein as he hasnt done anything illegal to our knoledge it would be unfair to label him a pedo :P
 
He's not a pedo, he just runs after anyone who's female and has a slight hint of beauty. Yep, a quintessential ladies' man.

The fact that he had to say the over 18 thing was a remnant of the NoA thing, which censored the game a lot(but gave us the legendary Woolseyisms).

In other words, Edgar does have good taste, even though he might have a loli complex...
 
I dont think he is a pedo, its no crime to recognize that a young girl is cute and one day will be beautiful. Edgar knew this, he never attempted to do anything with her, he was just asking. No need to call Chris Hansen.
 
The original SNES and PS English translations go like this:


Relm: What's wrong, lover boy?
Edgar: How old are you?
Relm: 10... why? I'm coming along, too.
Edgar: You've grown up entirely too fast! Lighten up, okay!?


So if anything it was Relm who was at fault. Why the changed the translations for the GBA version I don't know. I hate it when they do that. They screwed up Chrono Trigger's translations for the DS too. >_>
