thread title very creative ^_^

http://www.dailytech.com/Japanese+Make+Delicious+Nourishing+Steaks+From+Human+Feces/article21932.htm

i read about this the other day on /.

pastor doctor martin ssempa wont be pleased about this.

theyre trying to sell this as the solution to world hunger. its well known that the waste from supermarkets in the western world would be more than enough to feed those starving in third world countries so is this really solving a problem or is it just going to end up as a really weird delicacy? some of the "meat" we eat now is basically lips and arseholes anyway and apparently this shitmeat has environmental benefits. given these claims would you consider eating da poo poo and if so would you be willing to pay the same price for said poo poo as you would pay for a real steak?

Oh God...that is SICK! Ugh Huma Centipede...I couldn't sleep for a week after that movie...

And it will be priced the same as normal meat??? So, you're at the store. Hm...real meat or feces? Real meat or feces? I just can't decide. Same price...hm...

Who, in their RIGHT MIND, would buy it?? That is just scary...scary scary...I think I vomited in my mouth a little when reading the article. What with the Human Centipede pictures and with the description of HOW they are doing this, I'm surprised I didn't vomit completely. And I don't consider myself to have a weak stomach...

Really? Here starving Africans. We can't get you real food right now, so here's some SHIT!

And I thought they crossed the line when they made hot dogs. :oy:

A lot of the really shit quality meat goes into fast food and kebabs and shit like that. Spam is 'meat' scraped from bones etc.
I don't think anyone will want to eat food made from shit rather than a nice steak. But I guess starving African kiddies can't be choosers.

In the event that there are major famines, food shortages and pandemic starvation anywhere in the world, your desire to survive would probably be enough to get you through this psychological barrier - and as Hal more or less said, beggars can't be choosers. At the moment, if you are consciously aware that a certain food in the stores is actually - and marketed as - recycled faeces, then I can't think of anyone who would bother buying it, bar perhaps some daring people or the most fanatic of Greenpeace activists. If they want this to sell somehow, addressing the psychological barrier is the only real way to achieve that, and I can't see it being broken down anytime soon particularly for western society to stomach this.

beggars cant be choosers but do we really have to make them think that this is a viable option when our supermarkets already waste enough food each week to feed them? the guy obviously wants to make money from this, he wants to sell it at the same price as real meat that isnt going to be entirely practical for those people who already cant afford real meat.

Yeah... its not something i would go to the shop and buy. I mean there must be other ways right?

What about tofu etc? Surely we can make something in a lab that is far more appealing than this even if its tasteless you could add vitamins to make it beneficial and mass produce it.

If feces has to make an apperance then use it to power the machines that make this other type of food or something more appropriate. we've been making food stuffs in labs for years anyway, fake flavoring and preservatives.

But you could always argue its a life or death situation. In our modern society its a no no... if we lost everything in a great famine then its deffinatly an option i guess.

Thats just what i think anyway... yuk! xx

I'm not a vegan nor do I consider myself very radical about this, but...

I think if more people saw how their meat made it to their dinner table, they'd probably find making meat out of poop less vulgar than the real deal.

The meat industry eats up such a significant portion of crops (with diminishing returns too), that if there ever comes a worldwide famine, I don't think poop meat is very relevant to that matter, as the first and most feasible option to stop a famine would be to stop eating animals altogether.

I have trouble envisioning this as a solution to world hunger and famine. Firstly, it doesn't address the key issues behind most famines. Whilst the degradation of agricultural land in poverty stricken countries is a major issue, this leads to fault in subsistence rather than food shortages. A lot of the time, even in a majority of famine cases, the country has the resources to adequately feed it's people, but lacks the means to overcome obstacles in distribution, due to political, geographical or economic difficulties on either national or international levels. This faeces meat idea hardly goes to improve subsistence, since there isn't sufficient infrastructure in vulnerable regions to take advantage of it.

My second objection to the idea is that is seems extremely inefficient. Why go to effort of accumulating human faeces, growing bacteria, harvesting bacteria and finally 'cooking' it in order to extract protein than is then further processed in order to make 'meat'? It's already possible to make imitation meat very cheaply and efficiently from fungal mycoprotein, and I fail to see in what, if any, regards this new method is superior.

My inner 'Jackass' wants to try this. Plus, they said its slightly more nutritious!

I was really, really hoping this article was a joke when I first heard about it. I also really hoped, judging by the thread title, that this was about that silly Ugandan.

This is a better way to wake up though. Puts a good taste in my mouth that compliments my Cheerios.
