I have the original Kingdom Hearts. I've never completed it, so I am going to tackle it after I beat FFXIII. Do I need to play Chain of Memories, 358/2 days and any other games that I'm unaware of to get the full story? Or is Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 good enough? I don't have a GBA or DS to play the other games in the series.

I haven't played COM or 358/2 days, and I feel like I got the gist of the story from just I and II, but I'm sure that if you do play it, you'd be able to understand some key elements that the games (especially II) may be referring to and you won't feel so lost in the dark.

Hopefully that helped a bit. I don't think it's essential, but I'm sure it'd be a worthwhile investment if you did.

well I just discovered that they released Chain of Memories on the PS2 so I guess I can play that too. :)

Chain of Memories will probably be worth it, even though the battle system is quite a jump from Kingdom Hearts.

However, I only played KHI and KHII, and I think I got enough of the story to understand what was going on. It would definitely be worth going for the other games, if you could.

Nah, obviously you'll need to play Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II to understand the story for obvious reasons. However, whilst I thoroughly enjoyed both Chain of Memories and 358/2 Days there's no real need to play them. CoM is probably the most important out of the two as it introduces Organization XIII, but I played KHII before CoM and had no problem understanding it.

358/2 is pretty much a spin-off. It's nice seeing a new character in Xion and seeing what Roxas did in his Organization days but the only thing you get out of it is why
Roxas left the Organization
, which you don't really need to know, at all.

I've played Kingdom Hearts I and II, and I think I get the story. CoM and 358/2 Days help to fill in some holes between I and II, but they're largely unnecessary. You can get the majority of the Organization's story from KHII.

As for Birth by Sleep... that may be important. It's the first KH spin-off that is at a totally different time than KHI or KHII.

Well to get the main storyline i'd play KH and KHII but you don't have to play the other spinoffs of KH in order to get the main but, i'm sure it has some things that isn't in KH or KHII so i'm sure you'll pick up extra information. I mean I had no trouble but, I mean if you want to play them, I say why not? :monster:

As a fan I wanna give resounding yes for playing them all, but if you only wanna focus on Sora's adventure, KH and KH2 should be enough. Although I really recommend CoM since it takes place between those two games and sets up a lot for KH2 :hmmm:

Well If you want to understand the story generally you need to complete majority of the never ending spin offs which means Kingdom Hearts. kingdom Hearts 2, Kingdom Hearts Re chain of memories, Kingdom Hearts Birth By sleep, kingdom Hearts 358/2 days initally i played all of these except for 358/2 days but all of these games are relevant on the 100% history of the game, birth by sleep is before kingdom hearts so you really should start from their, 358/2 days or more info on the organization, and chain of memories focusing more on sora and his memories before kh 2 takes place and you see the other organization members like marluxia and his plot on the game. most likely you will need to play the coded one, final mixes and whatever the enxt spin off is too.
