I heard a lot of fans complained about it being kept in the english version but im glad it was. Its perfectly normal (and very common) in japan for cousins to be together. And i generally thought it was an interesting part of his character, plus its like 70% of what he says so it would have been pretty hard to cut.

Maybe i just dont care because i dont have cousins myself so i cant really be creeped out.

Well yeah it did kind of creep me out.

I mean out of all the people in the world why do you have to choose your blood-related cousin to like? <_<

It's just ridiculous. It's not that hard to get out there and meet people.

It's just something that doesn't make sense to me, even if it is supposedly common in some parts of the world.

It's incest/inbreeding, whatever you want to call it. I would never like to be known for doing either of those.

We just need to stop comparing it to our culture, it becomes pretty easy to shrug off. The reason im fine with it mainly is because it makes sense, its rather common in japan and frankly i hate it when they change things for the english version. Like when they took all the yaoi and yuri out of CardCaptor Sakura.

I dont understand how it doesnt make any sense to you? It is incest but its far away enough that their wont be any retard children and stuff. In japan its not even regarded as incest because cousins arent part of the main family.

Yeah, it didn't bother me in the slightest, tbh i didn't really notice xD I agree, it pisses me off when things get cut from our games, i know our culture is different, but why deprive gamers of what they want.

It didn't bother me but it was still weird. I was constantly thinking, "Why?!?". Seriously though, the crush on Yuna isn't what bothered me about Brother.. The fact that he bounces around like he's on speed (or hasted?) CONSTANTLY gives me the creeps and annoys me.

Eh, I'm with Kandy on this one. It did weird me out. That's probably due to the fact that I have A LOT of cousins, especially male ones (my mom had 8 siblings <.<), and I just can't ever picture myself getting a crush on my cousin, touching my cousin in anyway or even fucking my cousin. The mere thought literally just disgusts me. Sorry, but it's just my opinion. I think it's sick. I don't care if it's common in Japan. I'm an American, not Japanese, and I'd prefer not to have sex with somebody who's part of my flesh and blood, kthx.

Yes, I was absolutely creeped out. It was more of Brother's constant stalking of Yuna than the crush to be honest. He followed her around like she was something to drool over and that is not what I'd like to see in real life either. -__-

Welcome to the world, people!
Incest is defined differently in different cultures, and has been defined differently even in western cultures at different time periods.
In some cultures, it's considered incest for a brother to marry his brother's widow. In others, it's considered obligatory!
In some cultures, there are elaborate taboo rules which state that certain classes of people not related by blood are still incest-forbidden.
In some cultures, it's common to marry cousins, and it's considered a good thing, because it keeps the clan together, so to speak.

Genetically, cousins are usually far enough apart not to cause a problem, especially if there's some marrying of other folks as well.

One of Rikku's comments puzzles me, though. If cousin-marriage is considered okay in Japan, why does she kick Brother and call him "sicko"? Was it just because he was being a stalker slimeball (i.e. his behavior, not the fact that Yuna was his cousin)? Or was it his relationship with Yuna? Was that a hint that western attitudes about cousin-relationships are starting to penetrate Japan's awareness? Or was that only in the localized American dub, not in the Japanese?

I donno. I found brother's stalker behavior annoying at first -- nevermind he was her cousin, ANYBODY acting like that is creepy -- then decided he was just a dork loser, and Yuna was fully capable of kicking him in the balls.

A little. He is a little to closely related to Yuna. Maybe if he were a second, or even third cosin it would be okay. but a first cousin? Way too closely related.

I admit that I was creeped out by Brother's affection for Yuna. There was never anything in the first game to suggest such feelings, so it was really surprising to say the least. In general I don't support incest, so of course it bothered me. At least Yuna didn't recipricate -_-

I always interpreted it as Rikku thinking it was disgusting that he was all hot for a member of his family. And also, what relationship with Yuna? :wacky: There was never any relationship. Brother just had a thing for her and it was unrequited. Yuna didn't return the feelings or attraction.

I forgot they were related, so it just irritated me the way he mooned all over her all the time and generally acted the prat. But I'd rather keep it in the plot than change it . I'd hate the plot to be messed with regardless of the change, although I wouldn't know any different anyway I suppose....

Brothers just a weirdo and needs to find himself a new woman to moon at, preferably one he's NOT related too :gonk:

Buuut, cultures culture, we can't change how they work over there, and if it's ok to them, it's bound to work its way into the scripts - doesn't really affect us other than making us go ew *shrug*

I hate it when people say that, nobody is asking you to have sex with your cousins. Its like you can accept gay people without actually being gay.

I'm from the country, so it never really bothered me! :sup:

Anyway it's perfectly normal in many cultures around the world, and like Auronlu said: If 2 cousins choose to have children, there are really no problems to speak of genetically.

Mandi Pandi: my use of the word "relationship" was vague: I meant familial, not romantic.

To rephrase my question:

GIVEN that cousin-cousin marriage is not considered incest in Japan, I am curious which of these three possibilities explains Rikku's "Sicko" line:

1. Rikku was calling Brother "Sicko" simply because he was trying to cop a feel, and was acting like a slimeball. The target of his affections was irrelevant; the fact that he was being a stalker was what grossed her out.

2. OR, American/English customs about cousin-cousin relationships are starting to penetrate Japanese culture, enough to have Rikku react in a Western rather than Japanese way.

3. OR, that "Sicko" line was only in the American version, and she said something else in Japanese. There are a lot of American/English idioms in the Final Fantasy translations (e.g. "Don't worry, be happy" or "Macarena Temple?" in FFX).

The part that doesn't make sense to me is the part in which cousins can't get out into the world and find someone else to hook up with.

I don't understand why it's so hard for them to meet people, and would rather hook up with their own flesh and blood.

And as you said, it's still incest even if their kids don't come out retarded etc. The idea of having sex with anyone related to anyone is just weird in my opinion.

Also.

If Yuna's mum was still alive and Yuna and Brother did get together, how weird would it be?

Yuna's mum and Brother's dad are siblings.

Cid, "So my neice, who is also your daughter, is doing my son, who is also your nephew."

Keeping it in the family much? >_<

Though I suppose I do understand that it wouldn't be weird for them considering it is a common thing over there.

All I'm saying is that, that behaviour isn't welcome near me and that if anyone in my family did that, they would be shunned most likely.

I get that they may have their own little ideas such as this that are considered okay, but where I'm from you'd be looked at like this: 0_o,if you were to tell me that you were cousins and that you were married, etc.

the story of FFX-2 was almost as bad as the story of FFVII: AC. Nothing about the game is disturbing besides the fact it was made just for fanservice.

All of the characters were completely warped just to make someone laugh.

I didn't mind it, but why all of a sudden, with no explanation whatsoever, besides some crap that was cooked up after the game's release in some stupid ultimania guide or something? That's what irritated me.

Before FFX-2, I recall brother being quite a nervous and irritable fellow.... Nothing seemed to call for his change in attitude.

Well I'm sorry but get over it. That's the way I see it. I was just using it as an example, and last I checked people are allowed to have their own opinions. Having sex with your flesh and blood is a lot different than people being gay. I accept gay people just fine, and I'm not gay. I'm sorry, but I don't accept the familial flesh on flesh. I think it's just wrong. It makes my skin crawl. Hey, if you're all for incest more power to you. I, on the other hand, am not. Also, didn't you say in your first post that you don't have cousins? Since you don't then I'm sorry, but how would you really know or even begin to understand?

People are always looking to exploit the supporting cast. It just gives new rise and new meanings behind it all. Personally I'm not a big fan of FFX-2 but with that being said, my opinion is that Brother was exploited into a completely different character. It's like saying... all southerners (here in the US) have a bit of incest along the lines.. which it might be true way far back, but genetically it is still disturbing.

Why? Well as studies find it, it causes higher cases of mental retardation as well as physical disabilities. So that's why in the West we have demonized inbreeds.

Personally I think incest is sick. I mean of course by any stretch cousins are not brothers or sisters, but at the same time they are blood. That would be like me and my year younger cousin (K). We might both be attractive, but we would never see eachother in that sort of way. I view her as a sister.. like Kandi and others have said, there are options!

So coming back to Brother, yea it is a little bit off as to why they did that to his character. He reminded me of a warped Cid (ffvii version). So that kind of erked me when I read these things.

Get over it? I think your the only one that needs to get over it pal "just creeps me out", im only questioning your logic.

No i dont have cousins but i still have a family and such, but why compare it to a situation like that? Its completley different in japan and so doing that will only give you a warped view.

Im okay with people doing anything that makes them happy as long as it doesnt effect me.
